Chapter 2

Author: Fine Words
Mandy frowned. "I'm really busy. I don't have time to play games with you."

Those words sounded familiar.

She said the same thing when my mother was in an accident and her life was in danger. It was only when I took a picture of the critical illness notice from the hospital that Mandy finally called me back.

"Mandy, I need $15,000 for my mother's hospital bill. I need you—"

Before I could finish my sentence, she interrupted me sharply. "All my money is in a fixed deposit. If I withdraw it, I’ll lose the interest. This transaction isn't worth it."

I was stunned, and I yelled madly when I snapped out of it, but her calm reply only chilled me to the bone.

"Money doesn't come easily, Mick. If you were capable enough, you could pay her bills yourself."

Mandy seemed to have forgotten her promise to me when she got on one knee to propose to me. "I'll be the family's breadwinner. All you need to do is enjoy life at home. If you had to get a job, it would just make me feel I'm not an adequate moneymaker."

She was a Venture Capital General Manager and had a strong personality, and in a marriage, someone always had to compromise for the marriage to last.

Thus, I always gave in to her. However, the result was that my mother died in the end because the payment of $15,000 was not made on time.

I looked down at my phone and scrolled to the date of my mother's death. Felix had posted a listing that night. He was selling a pair of boxers with holes in them.

Mandy had commented: [My dear, you'll only make me jealous by doing this.]

The bid started at $15,000, and Mandy bought it for $30,000.

While I was staring at my phone, Mandy's voice rang in my ear once more. "I'm going on a business trip in a month."

I looked up at her, trying to find any trace of guilt on her face, but I found nothing.

Mandy had been going on business trips for the past eight years, and I felt bad that she had to travel so much, so I packed her luggage perfectly every time for her. This time, however, I did nothing.

She noticed this but said nothing. However, she slammed the door harder than on any day before when she left the house.

Mandy claimed she was going on a business trip, but for the past eight years, she had been going on trips with Felix.

More items were put up for sale, and they were all sorts of travel souvenirs.

Felix was not mad, and Mandy continued buying everything he sold.

Other buyers started to notice something funny between them.

[Has this marketplace account turned into a flirting zone? Singles like us can't take this!]

This time, Felix put up a belt for sale. The bid started at $2, but the moment he listed it, he posted a comment.

Felix: [I forgot that this isn't for sale. I got it for my best buddy. Please don't bid on it!]

After that, he tagged Mandy.

Felix: [Get this quickly. This way, it can be your present to Mick.]

This was the only time Mandy did not bid on an item on Felix’s page.

Mandy: [That's not necessary. He's a practical guy and thinks $2 is expensive. I don't need to buy something for him only to be scolded.]

After that, Mandy bid on a suit Felix put up for $150.

Mandy: [It's still not good enough for you, no matter how expensive it is.]

After reading all their comments, I no longer hesitated and texted Mandy a message I had been editing for a long time.

Mick: [Come home. It's urgent.]

Unexpectedly, Mandy came home the next day. I thought she would ignore my message and claim she was busy.

I passed her a piece of paper. "This is the property notice, and the property owner has to sign it."

Mandy was distracted by other thoughts, and she signed without looking at the contents. She had no idea that she had just signed our divorce papers.

"Felix says he misses you and wants to have dinner at our place tomorrow. Get him his favorite lobster."

I put the divorce papers away and took the $300 she gave me. Making one meal for Felix cost more than my monthly allowance from Mandy.

No wonder Mandy came home early. It was because Felix wanted to be back early too.

Mandy went out of her way to remind me of what Felix could or could not eat, and I nodded to everything she said.

This was our last meal together.

I had accepted the job offer 2,000 miles away, and I would start work next week.

My mother was right. A man needed to have his own career.

"We're already divorced. It's none of my business whether you get pregnant. Do you think this is brave of you? When my mother's life was in danger, I begged you for $15,000 to save her life, but you told me that money had been invested in a fixed deposit and you would lose interest if you withdrew from it."You said the transaction was not worth it, but you soon spent $30,000 after that to buy Felix's boxers. The boxers were a worthy transaction, but my mother's life wasn't? How cheap was my mother's life in your eyes?"Mandy's lips turned pale. "I regret my decision."I laughed. "How does it help that you're regretting it? Can my mom come back to life? I've disappointed my mom so many times. Before she died, her last wish was for me to be free. It was her last wish for me, and I don't want to disappoint her again."When I finished talking, I checked my watch, and they called my name to board my flight. I took a step back to put a distance between us. "You should go. Let's just lea

Mandy's mother's face fell, but she still tried to force a smile. "I know you're heartbroken, and it's only normal that you had a slip of the tongue."I finally looked up to look her right in the eyes. "I'm not wrong. She can't have any children, and she can't produce any heirs for the Fentons. I don't want her anymore."Mandy's mother was stunned. It was the first time I had talked back to her, as I always tolerated everything she did or said to me. To her, I was the Mick Fenton who never dared disobey anyone in her family."What do you mean?" She frowned."I mean exactly what I said. She's not good enough."Mandy's mother started feeling dizzy after my retort, and her father quickly held her. "Did I hear things wrong? Is my daughter really infertile? It's the end of the Sudds!"Her father looked sad, but it was not because of me. It was because of the Sudds' future. While they were still wallowing in sorrow, I gestured for them to leave. "Please leave now. I need my rest."M

Mandy became frustrated, and she wanted to say more, but a sharp-eyed nurse kicked her out. "That's enough. You're just annoying people. Haven't you humiliated yourself enough? Get out already!"When the nurse asked her to leave, Mandy realized all the patients were looking over at her. Even though none of them said anything, she could tell from the look in their eyes that they were calling her a b*tch.Mandy clenched her teeth and warned, "I won't get a divorce, Mick, no matter what price I have to pay!"She left after that.I looked around the hospital room, which was finally quiet, and hugged my knees. I suddenly felt really cold.My mother had brought me up on her own after my father died in a car accident when I was very young. I had never experienced the warmth of a family except from my mother. That was why, when Felix and Mandy reached out to me, they became important people in my life.I treated them as an important part of my life, but three was a crowd, and they quietl

Mandy was in shock as her mouth fell agape."When I wanted to buy a his-and-hers phone, you said I didn’t know how to manage a family and wanted me to focus on it, but you immediately bought the latest phone for Felix right after that. My request for the $1,000 phone meant I was not doing a good job with our family, but the same amount is too little for the great Felix."Mandy had no excuse and tried to make it up to me. "If you want a phone, I'll get you one. I promise I won't reject your requests anymore."I replied, "It's not all about the phone. The pictures in your phone told me that you and Felix admired the night view at Wallace Harbor, and you kissed under the Northern Lights. The furthest place you and I have been to is the parking lot in our neighboring district."Before I was done, she quickly said, "I can take you wherever you want to go.""I'm not interested anymore."My reply destroyed all of Mandy's hopes. "Can you really give me anything I want if I go home with

The doctor glanced at her incredulously. "Infertility treatment. It’s medication for a person who can't have children. Don't you understand what I just said?"His tone was gruff because he had been chatting with me for the past few days and had found out about my predicament. As a man, he was angry on my behalf, and he was not at all friendly to Mandy."Are you the patient's wife? He's been admitted here for five days, but I've never seen you here once. What's the point of showing concern now?"The doctor pushed her aside and helped me with my bandage. "Your husband is healthy and in excellent health. You shouldn't blame others when you're the one with the problem."When Mandy snapped out of it, she grabbed the doctor's arm in a fluster. "There's nothing wrong with me. Are you doing the same thing as the last doctor by ganging up with Mick to lie to me? Mick is the one who has infertility issues, and I've done my utmost duty by not abandoning him."You're just lying to me because

Felix was the first to come after me. "I can explain, Mick. I didn't mean to hurt you."If he did not want me to find out, he would not have talked about it so loudly. The way his eyes turned red from brimming with tears reminded me of the past.Someone had found a medical report in his drawer that diagnosed him with a sexually transmitted disease. His eyes had turned red the same way when he looked at me and said firmly, "It's time to end our friendship. I don't want my reputation to drag you through the mud."Still, I took pity on him and took the fall for him. For that, I was labeled a dirty slut for three years. When we were at university, he begged me again to put his name down on my project as the main lead, and I shared my achievements with him.Felix grabbed me at the stairs. I frowned and tried to push him away. However, he came at me again, and I fell down the stairs in a loud crash when I failed to grab the railing for balance. My head banged several times against the
