Chapter 3

Author: Fine Words
The next day, I opened the door to find that Felix was not our only guest. Mandy's parents were here too.

I saw them less than three times a year, and I only ever got to meet them because of Felix. After all, they were only willing to make an appearance when their godson, Felix, was around.

When Felix came, Mandy entered the kitchen for the first time. We had known each other for at least a decade, but she had never cooked for me before.

The first dish was a creamy mushroom soup. I was just about to scoop myself a bowl when someone slapped me hard on the back of my hand. My hands turned red instantly.

"That soup is good for couples trying to get pregnant. A sterile man like you doesn't deserve to have it."

After that, Mandy's mother scooped a bowl of soup for Felix. "You should have more soup, Felix."

When I first married into the Sudds, Mandy's mother did not treat me this way. She always made sure that I had healthy food and enough supplements, but when Mandy failed to get pregnant, her family's attitude toward me changed for the worse.

Mandy's mother insisted that I was sterile, but the truth was Mandy had polycystic ovaries, and it was difficult for her to get pregnant. However, I did not show her the medical report because Mandy loved children, and I did not want her to be sad about it.

Her father put some anchovy salad on my plate and said, "It doesn't matter how much dressing you put in there to hide the smell. You can never change the fact that it's an anchovy. That's how it is with all anchovies."

My fists clenched under the table.

He was insinuating that my mother and I were the anchovies in their life.

I looked away and glanced at Mandy, who was pretending not to notice anything as usual.

On the day of our wedding, my mother had no seat at the main table. She was forced to stand with the waiters because no seat was allocated for her, so she could only watch me get married from a distance.

The seat that belonged to her ended up being taken by Felix, who sat next to Mandy's mother and was chatting happily with her.

During my mother's funeral, everything had been arranged and set up, but Mandy's parents left the moment they arrived. "We're just here to take a look. We won't be staying in case we get stained by bad luck."

Mandy noticed the poor turnout, and she said, "Mick, I need to leave. I have work at the office." She paused before giving me what she thought was consolation. "It's not a bad thing to be rid of your blood family."

From the very beginning, Mandy and her family looked down on my mother and me.

After dinner, I was ordered to do the dishes while Felix chatted with them in the living room. After I was done, I was about to walk into the living room when I overheard Mandy warning her family in a low voice, "Don't say anything like that to him in the future."

Mandy's mother did not seem to mind. "What's wrong? Do you think Mick will leave you if you get pregnant with Felix's baby?

She shook her head. "How could he leave me? Look at how old he is. He doesn't have a job, doesn't live his life to the fullest, and can't even get me pregnant. What woman would want him? He's nothing without me."

Mandy's mother laughed. "Sounds about right. The Sudds need an heir."

She seemed to agree with her mother, as she did not object to what her mother said.

However, Felix was not happy about it. "All you're talking about is having a baby. I haven't forgiven you yet, Mandy."

Mandy knew what he meant, and she quickly explained, "I know that phone has a lot of our memories saved, but that guy is asking for $150,000—"

Her mother interrupted, "$150,000 is nothing."

Mandy's father agreed. "It's worth going bankrupt if Felix is happy."

My mind went into a daze when I heard their conversation, and I absent-mindedly let go of the plate in my hand. There was a loud smash, and everyone turned to look at me.

"We're already divorced. It's none of my business whether you get pregnant. Do you think this is brave of you? When my mother's life was in danger, I begged you for $15,000 to save her life, but you told me that money had been invested in a fixed deposit and you would lose interest if you withdrew from it."You said the transaction was not worth it, but you soon spent $30,000 after that to buy Felix's boxers. The boxers were a worthy transaction, but my mother's life wasn't? How cheap was my mother's life in your eyes?"Mandy's lips turned pale. "I regret my decision."I laughed. "How does it help that you're regretting it? Can my mom come back to life? I've disappointed my mom so many times. Before she died, her last wish was for me to be free. It was her last wish for me, and I don't want to disappoint her again."When I finished talking, I checked my watch, and they called my name to board my flight. I took a step back to put a distance between us. "You should go. Let's just lea

Mandy's mother's face fell, but she still tried to force a smile. "I know you're heartbroken, and it's only normal that you had a slip of the tongue."I finally looked up to look her right in the eyes. "I'm not wrong. She can't have any children, and she can't produce any heirs for the Fentons. I don't want her anymore."Mandy's mother was stunned. It was the first time I had talked back to her, as I always tolerated everything she did or said to me. To her, I was the Mick Fenton who never dared disobey anyone in her family."What do you mean?" She frowned."I mean exactly what I said. She's not good enough."Mandy's mother started feeling dizzy after my retort, and her father quickly held her. "Did I hear things wrong? Is my daughter really infertile? It's the end of the Sudds!"Her father looked sad, but it was not because of me. It was because of the Sudds' future. While they were still wallowing in sorrow, I gestured for them to leave. "Please leave now. I need my rest."M

Mandy became frustrated, and she wanted to say more, but a sharp-eyed nurse kicked her out. "That's enough. You're just annoying people. Haven't you humiliated yourself enough? Get out already!"When the nurse asked her to leave, Mandy realized all the patients were looking over at her. Even though none of them said anything, she could tell from the look in their eyes that they were calling her a b*tch.Mandy clenched her teeth and warned, "I won't get a divorce, Mick, no matter what price I have to pay!"She left after that.I looked around the hospital room, which was finally quiet, and hugged my knees. I suddenly felt really cold.My mother had brought me up on her own after my father died in a car accident when I was very young. I had never experienced the warmth of a family except from my mother. That was why, when Felix and Mandy reached out to me, they became important people in my life.I treated them as an important part of my life, but three was a crowd, and they quietl

Mandy was in shock as her mouth fell agape."When I wanted to buy a his-and-hers phone, you said I didn’t know how to manage a family and wanted me to focus on it, but you immediately bought the latest phone for Felix right after that. My request for the $1,000 phone meant I was not doing a good job with our family, but the same amount is too little for the great Felix."Mandy had no excuse and tried to make it up to me. "If you want a phone, I'll get you one. I promise I won't reject your requests anymore."I replied, "It's not all about the phone. The pictures in your phone told me that you and Felix admired the night view at Wallace Harbor, and you kissed under the Northern Lights. The furthest place you and I have been to is the parking lot in our neighboring district."Before I was done, she quickly said, "I can take you wherever you want to go.""I'm not interested anymore."My reply destroyed all of Mandy's hopes. "Can you really give me anything I want if I go home with

The doctor glanced at her incredulously. "Infertility treatment. It’s medication for a person who can't have children. Don't you understand what I just said?"His tone was gruff because he had been chatting with me for the past few days and had found out about my predicament. As a man, he was angry on my behalf, and he was not at all friendly to Mandy."Are you the patient's wife? He's been admitted here for five days, but I've never seen you here once. What's the point of showing concern now?"The doctor pushed her aside and helped me with my bandage. "Your husband is healthy and in excellent health. You shouldn't blame others when you're the one with the problem."When Mandy snapped out of it, she grabbed the doctor's arm in a fluster. "There's nothing wrong with me. Are you doing the same thing as the last doctor by ganging up with Mick to lie to me? Mick is the one who has infertility issues, and I've done my utmost duty by not abandoning him."You're just lying to me because

Felix was the first to come after me. "I can explain, Mick. I didn't mean to hurt you."If he did not want me to find out, he would not have talked about it so loudly. The way his eyes turned red from brimming with tears reminded me of the past.Someone had found a medical report in his drawer that diagnosed him with a sexually transmitted disease. His eyes had turned red the same way when he looked at me and said firmly, "It's time to end our friendship. I don't want my reputation to drag you through the mud."Still, I took pity on him and took the fall for him. For that, I was labeled a dirty slut for three years. When we were at university, he begged me again to put his name down on my project as the main lead, and I shared my achievements with him.Felix grabbed me at the stairs. I frowned and tried to push him away. However, he came at me again, and I fell down the stairs in a loud crash when I failed to grab the railing for balance. My head banged several times against the
