Chapter 1

"Justin, don't… There are too many people here today. If Elise finds out…"

"What are you afraid of? Isn't it more exciting with so many people here? Isn't this what you love?

"Besides, what could she do even if she finds out? You're my friend, and I'm just helping you experience what passion between a man and a woman feels like during your final days. Elise wouldn't be so petty about this."

I sneered. He was wrong about me. Not only was I petty, but I would make sure that I got my revenge. I returned to the party and connected the security camera to the big screen, displaying every frame recorded from the very start to everyone watching.

When Justin Ludwig and Callie Fuller walked out of the storeroom with flushed cheeks, I held up the loudspeaker and laughed sarcastically while announcing, "Let's welcome the best buddies who went through 18 boxes of birth control pills in three months! Did you guys have fun?"

While I was speaking, Callie's shrill screaming could be heard from the speakers. I turned up the volume of the loudspeaker. "The ‘Storeroom Experience’, a three-in-one package. For three months of enjoyment among two 'buddies', the total payment is…"

I paused and turned my gaze to Justin's pale face. "18 boxes of birth control pills. Do you need me to announce the brand and batch number on each box? I still have your purchase receipts."

"Elise!" Justin finally caught up to what was happening and tried to reach out to grab the loudspeaker from me. "What are you talking about? Turn it off! Turn it off right now!"

Callie, who was right behind him, turned pale instantly. Her voice was still hoarse from all the moaning not long ago. "No, it's not what you think. Justin was… He was only trying to help me…"

"He was trying to help you experience what passion feels like between a man and a woman by thrusting in and out of you enthusiastically, right?"

I leaned to the side to evade Justin's hand reaching out to me and pointed to the big screen that was playing footage from the security camera. Callie's leg was still circling Justin's waist. "Does the experience require purchasing birth control pills in bulk?

"Your ‘last days’ have lasted pretty long. It’s been three months, and you’ve been gaining a lot of ‘experience’ during that time.”

Someone below the stage burst out in a laugh.

Justin's parents stood up to try to smooth over the situation despite looking upset, but my best friend, Celeste Sims, stopped them with a big, fake smile. "The show has just started, Mr. and Mrs. Ludwig. What's the rush?"

I walked over to the stage console to flick a few switches. Now, the screen displayed numerous shopping lists and transaction history screenshots. "Here, let me expand the images for everyone to take a good look.

"You can see the dates, times, transaction amounts, and purchase channels, which include several online shopping platforms and convenience stores nearby."

I pointed the laser pen at the screen, and the red dot landed with precision on every Levonorgestrel box and every recorded emergency contraception purchase.

"Justin paid for them, but interestingly…" The red dot jumped to a bank transaction record. "The credit card used was my supplementary card."

The reveal caused a commotion among the crowd.

"He used his fiancée's money to pay for his 'buddy's' birth control pills? It's impressive how much support you’ve given your 'buddy', Justin!"

Justin's eyes turned red as he almost went crazy from being exposed so embarrassingly.

"Did you plot this, Elise?"

"Plot this? Are you worth my time to plot anything against you? All I did was wonder why my gastritis has gotten even more serious when I’ve been taking medication regularly. I'm the one suffering from gastritis, so why was your 'buddy' making you deliver that medication to her all the time?"

I took out the pills I had been taking for my gastritis and flung them hard in his face. "It was only today that I found out it was never gastritis medication I was taking. It was birth control pills that you secretly swapped out!

"Do you know the consequences of taking birth control pills, Justin? It can cause hormonal imbalance or even more serious side effects! Have you even considered my well-being at all?"

My tone was cold, and every word was laced with hate.

Justin went blank when I flung the pills at him, and he started stuttering an excuse. "Y-you're being ridiculous! T-those are j-just…"

"You wouldn't have won without Jack Grisham, Elise. You were just lucky."I smiled and said clearly into the phone, "Luck is a part of one's capability. Even if luck was on my side, Celeste, you're probably not worthy of having any. Enjoy the last of your days. I heard that prisoners take good care of backstabbers like you."When Celeste became enraged by what I said, I hung up and left the prison. The sun outside was shining brightly, and a black sedan quietly stopped beside me. When the windows rolled down, I saw Jack's stoic face."All done?"He sounded calm as usual."Yup. Thank you, Mr. Grisham. I know you said this was a transaction, but I'll remember what you did for me."Jack raised an eyebrow, but did not deny my words. In a rare moment, he elaborated further. "You don't need to thank me. Someone trusted asked for my help, and a loyal friend does not reject such a request."I could not hold back my curiosity. "Can you tell me now who exactly came to you for help? I'd li

I did not ask about what Justin had done specifically to annoy him, but my gut told me that it had nothing to do with me. It was the reason Jack got involved in this. I heard a police siren in the distance, and it sounded like it was coming closer.Jack glanced out the window. "Your men are pretty efficient, but my offer is still on the table before they arrive. "You can go public about me saving you by coincidence from being murdered by your fiancé and best friend. You almost lost your life, and I gave you help out because I’m a good Samaritan. My involvement in this would make sense and make it more convincing for you to fight back."He did not need to be any clearer about this, as I instantly understood the power of Jack's name. With his help and support, I could bring Justin down and make sure he could never come back. As for Jack, what he wanted was a legitimate reason to get involved. He might also be profiting from whatever was happening, but I had no idea how. To him, t

The phone rang for a long time before I heard Larry's calm and cautious voice on the other end of the call. "Hello?""Uncle Larry, it's me, Elise." I tried to hold back my sob. "I need your help right now."There were several seconds of silence on the other end, as Larry tried to determine my condition and if I really was who I said I was. "Elise? Where are you? Rumors are flying around out here—""I know what's going on out there," I interrupted him. "Did Justin spread rumors about me being mentally unstable because I suffered a huge shock?"Larry paused before sighing. "Yes, he did. He contacted several board members to tell them that you suffered a breakdown due to the mishap at your engagement party, and you might… You might do something to affect the company's reputation and revenue."He wanted us to talk you into going home to rest if we managed to contact you."I knew that he would take action to ruin my reputation first!"Uncle Larry, I have evidence of Justin embezzling

"Someone asked for your help?" I asked right away when I caught those words. I could not think of anyone who would help me, let alone go so far as to get this man's help at a time like this. Jack did not answer. All he did was turn the steering wheel and drive the car down a quiet road. We finally stopped in front of a hidden villa. "Get out of the car."He released his seatbelt, while I remained hesitant in my seat. The pain all over my body and my weak limbs did not allow me to think further, so I ended up following him out of the car. Every step I took felt like I was stepping on knives.Jack hesitated slightly before bending over to carry me in his arms. When we got into the house, he took out a first aid kit and placed it on the table in the living room. "You should tend to your wounds. The guest room is the second room on the left. There are new clothes and toiletries prepared inside."He left me alone after he finished his instructions. He headed to his study, looking like

Cold air filled my mouth and nostrils instantly, but I knew this was just the second floor. The next second, I fell heavily onto a soft patch of grass downstairs, but the fall was enough to hurt my insides. My body was covered in pain as the shards cut through my skin. I could hear Justin and Celeste cursing at me upstairs.I tried my best to stand despite the intense pain. I stepped onto the cold grass and broken glass in my bare feet to pick up the flash drive from the ground. After that, I stumbled my way toward the street. I knew I had to get out of there and hand the evidence to the police. I could hear Justin and Celeste dashing down the stairs while yelling angrily. My heart drummed in my chest as I ran with all my might. Every breath I took tasted like blood, and when I finally dashed out of the commercial district of the building and arrived at the road, blinding car lights suddenly shone on me.A black sedan sped toward me and parked right in front of me with a sharp swe

"Shut up!" Celeste suddenly roared at Justin, looking enraged. That roar confirmed everything Justin said was true, and I suddenly felt dizzy with realization. I had to stop myself from falling by holding onto the side of the table. The world turned quiet all of a sudden, and all I could hear was my heavy breathing and the sound of my heart being torn apart. Celeste was my most trusted friend. She was with me when I caught Justin cheating, and she had been angry on my behalf for what they did. She was also there by my side when I chose to forgive Justin's 'buddy' again and again. It turned out that she was in cahoots with them! Celeste was the one who swapped my pills to make sure my health deteriorated, and she was even helping Justin usurp my fortune. Why?"Why did you do it?" I finally asked with a trembling voice. Celeste looked at my eyes brimming with tears, and she knew she could no longer hide it. The concern was wiped off her face and replaced with a malicious and
