Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
When I got home, there was no one else in the house. The food I had yet to clear away the night before was still on the dinner table.

James and Max never came home.

I went into Max’s room and brought out the carefully-chosen gifts I had left on his bed. When I tossed out the food, I put the gifts on top of the trash can.

Since he did not appreciate them, I would leave them for someone who did.

As I was eating some oatmeal, there was some noise from the door.

Max walked into the house with his little backpack, looking impatient. He came up to me reluctantly and held out his hand. “Where’s my birthday present?”

I looked up from the comedy show I was watching. “Oh, sorry. I forgot to buy any.”

Max was furious. “I knew it, you don’t care about me at all! You’re a failure as a mother. You’re nothing compared to Aunt Pearl!”

His mood changes on a dime, just like his father's.

I looked at him and said seriously, “I nearly died when I gave birth to you, and I’ve treated you well these years. I gave you almost anything you wanted. If you hate me because I made you do your homework, then your wish has come true. You never have to do homework again.”

Max looked at me in disbelief. “Really?”

When I nodded, he gave me a nasty smirk. “You’re trying to make it sound nice, but you just can’t teach me anymore.

“Granny said you’re a high school grad, but Dad and Aunt Pearl both went to college. You’re the stupidest one around here! No wonder Granny doesn’t like you.”

My education was a sore point in my life. No one remembered that my results in school were much better than James’s back then, but the school could only afford one scholarship, so I gave it to James.

I knew his mother did not like me, either. She thought I was a lowly orphan and that he deserved someone better. I even went out in the rain to buy her medicine before, just to win her approval.

Her attitude toward me improved after I gave birth to Max, but I never expected her to badmouth me in front of my own son.

Max glared at me like I was his enemy. All of a sudden, I felt exhausted.

When James came back, he was drunk. He collapsed onto the couch, and a piece of cloth fell from his pocket.

When I picked it up, he abruptly grabbed my wrist, his tone cold. “What are you messing around for this time?”

His grip hurt, so I winced. After that, he let go, and the silk scarf fell to the floor.

I took a deep breath. “I just wanted to ask you if you needed this washed. Whatever, you decide.”

James’s breath was thick with alcohol. I resisted the urge to puke.

He gave me a long look, then clicked his tongue. “Could you stop overthinking things, Wendy? Someone stuffed it into my pocket during team-building games at work. If you’re curious, just ask. Don’t accuse me of random offenses.”

True, James used to care a lot about his boundaries. It was only after meeting Pearl that he kept making exception after exception.

I used to do everything from throwing tantrums to storming off in jealous fits. Looking back now, it was quite embarrassing.

I said, “I wasn’t overthinking. You can check the surveillance cameras if you must. Stay in the living room until the alcohol wears out, would you? I’m heading back to sleep.”

When I stood up, James hugged me tightly. I caught a waft of rose perfume amid the stench of alcohol, and the combination made me throw up.

James looked like he had stepped in feces. I suddenly grinned at him.

“James, I’m pregnant.”

Over dinner, Max kept begging me to take him in. I refused nonchalantly but firmly.I was never going back to that life, and I could never look at this boy the same way again.Ignoring his expression of disappointment, I scarfed down the food. Halfway through the meal, however, the heavily pregnant Pearl showed up and tried to splash lemon water onto me. James shielded me with his body. Pearl screamed in tears, “I'm carrying this baby for you, and this is how you treat me?! You met up with this woman behind my back!”I vaguely heard the other customers whisper about an affair behind my back, so I wiped my mouth and shoved James aside.“Just so we're clear, Pearl, I'm James's ex-wife, and Max is my son. I can still meet my kid after the divorce, so who are you trying to frame here?“Besides, don't you know exactly why we got divorced in the first place?”The onlookers assumed it was just a classic case of a man cheating on his pregnant wife, but the situation immediately took

I was preparing for a jewelry design competition. If I could win a prize, it would be a huge boost to our brand. After a few all-nighters, I left my office early in the morning, only to bump into James and Max. They stood there, waiting for me like statues, and gave me quite a fright. Max ran over to hug me excitedly. “Mom, I really missed you!”I froze and then immediately pushed him away. “I'm not your mom! You're mistaken.”Max teared up instantly. “But aren't you my mom?”Dealing with Max was more tiring than work. I could no longer love this boy as a son whenever I remembered how he tried to kill me for an outsider.I turned to James, my tone hard. “I thought I told you not to disturb me.”James chuckled bitterly. “He kept asking for his mommy. I had no choice.”“Well, what about Pearl?”Amid his silence, I yawned. “If there's nothing else, I'm going home to sleep.”The sun had set by the time I got up. When I headed out for dinner, I saw Max crouching in the downstairs

That night, I left the Feltons’ home. James offered to send me to my rental, but I refused and gave him three days to think it over. If he still would not see reason, I would either sue him, live separately, or use public opinion against him. Either way, I would do whatever made me happy. James's expression darkened with every word. The very next day, he called me. His voice was weary. “Pearl is in the hospital. She cut her wrists and barely made it. “I'm sorry, Wendy. I can't just watch her die. Let's get divorced.”I had nothing else to say. Pearl's actions made my life much easier. Two months later, our divorce was finalized. I practically skipped down the stairs.“Wait!” James called after me, holding Max’s hand. “Let me treat you to a meal.”I turned around and grinned at him. “I don't need a farewell lunch. I don't plan to talk to you ever again, so there's no need for pleasantries.”The day I was officially divorced, I sold the car and my property in the city. After

James frowned. “What are you playing at now, Wendy?”Pearl approached us with tears in her eyes. “Wendy, I swear there’s nothing between me and James. My ex-boyfriend was sitting behind us at the concert, and he’s been bugging me for ages. I had no choice but to put on a show with James to get rid of him. I’m no homewrecker, I swear!”I laughed and applauded her appearance. “Really? Because you looked like a couple of filthy adulterers to me. You even used your tongue in that video! But you still insist you’re innocent?“If you’re being stalked, call the damn police! You had ‘no choice’ but to make out with a married man? Please, this isn’t an idol drama.”James looked livid. One of his friends hurriedly tried to talk me down. “Come on. Wendy, you and James have been married for ages! Don’t you know what he’s like? He would never mess around under our noses.”I shot back, “Right, because he’s messing around in front of your noses. Are you gonna cover your friend when he cheats and

Dr. Richards was the one who discovered I was pregnant. After the abortion, I rested at the hospital for three days. When I reached home, James confronted me angrily. “Where did you go? You wouldn’t answer any calls or reply to my texts!“You completely neglected our son! I’m lucky I had Pearl, or I’d never have been able to handle everything!“You had better have a good explanation, or I won’t let this slide!”I lay on the couch somewhat weakly. “Isn’t your mother free? I thought she loved kids.”James snorted. “My mom’s getting old, so she can’t take care of Max for long. You’re his mother, how could you abandon him?”I tugged at the corners of my lips. That old hag used to snatch Max from my arms, only to return him after completely corrupting his personality… and now she thought he was a burden? Ha.I smirked, my chin on my hand. “What about Pearl, then? Don’t she and Max get along swimmingly? Otherwise, you could just hire a nanny.”James was silent for a moment before ret

After a moment of silence, James spoke up. “You can’t even raise one child, much less two. Right now, I just want to make sure Max grows up well.”I stared at him, my eyes stinging.“I was joking.”That was all I could manage to say before I ran to the toilet to throw up. When I reemerged, James was rushing out of the door with his phone in hand.I tried to stop him, but he shoved me aside, roaring in rage, “A life is at stake here, and you’re still being jealous? Her stomach hurts because she drank too much beer to score a business deal! Unlike you, she can’t make a living just by staying home all day!”I took a business card out of the drawer nearby. “It isn’t safe to drive while you’re drunk. This is a cab driver’s number. Call him to pick you up.”James took the card, opening his mouth as though to say something. When no words came out, I turned around and gave him a bunch of painkillers from the first-aid kit.“Your assistant is always having aches and pains. You should tak
