MIKKA.

I stared at my phone for several seconds before finally answering the call. My heart was still beating too fast from the visit of the two men, and hearing Mara Calloway's name on my screen had only made me more nervous. I took a slow breath and pressed the phone to my ear, trying to sound normal even though I was anything but normal.

"Hello... Mrs. Calloway?"

“Hello, dear. How are you?” she asked.

“I-I'm fine,” I replied, stuttering at first, then quickly adding “Ma'am.”

SEVEN.“You'll have to find a way to help her before she realizes you are doing it.”I remained standing in my bedroom long after I left the study, staring at the dark window while my mother's words kept repeating inside my head. I knew exactly what Mom meant because Mikka would never accept money from me, no matter how desperate things became, and the thought of secretly helping her felt wrong even though doing nothing felt worse. She had spent months proving that she could survive on her own, refusing favors unless she had earned them and carrying every problem as if asking for help was some kind of failure. I admired that stubborn strength in her, but now I was beginning to see that the same strength was slowly hurting her.I grabbed my jacket and left the estate before I could talk myself out of it. The drive to campus felt longer than usual because my mind kept moving between the debt, the threats and the frightened look I had seen on her face so many times. When I reached the h

SEVEN.I had barely stepped into the house when one of the house staff found me near the stairs. She told me my mother was waiting in her study with the family lawyer, and something about her serious expression made me stop asking questions. I followed her upstairs, wondering what could possibly be so important that Mom needed a lawyer involved. When I opened the study door, I found Mom sitting at the large conference table with Mr. Bennett, our family lawyer, while several thick files were spread neatly between them. My stomach tightened before anyone even said a word."Sit down, Seven," Mom said.I pulled out a chair and sat across from them."What's going on?"Mr. Bennett adjusted his glasses before looking at my mother."Your mother asked me to review some information concerning Mikka Rowan."I immediately frowned."You're investigating Mikka?"Mom's expression remained calm."I'm asking questions. There is a difference.""You could have told me.""I could have," she admitted. "Bu

SEVEN.I did not drive away immediately after Mikka walked into her residence. I kept my hands on the steering wheel and stared at the entrance, replaying her final words in my head until they started to feel heavier than they should have. “Your mom was right about one thing... you've changed.” I had heard compliments before, from coaches, teammates and people who only cared about what I could do on the ice, but those words felt different because Mikka had seen me before the change, when I was angry, frustrated and ready to believe that I was finished. She had watched me at my worst and somehow still believed there was something worth saving.I finally drove home, but my thoughts stayed with her the entire way. When I entered the Calloway estate, the house was already quiet, yet Mom was still awake in the living room with a stack of charity proposals spread across the coffee table. She looked up the moment I walked in, and her eyes narrowed when she noticed the smile I was trying badl

MIKKA.Mara's question caught me completely off guard, but I politely told her she could ask me anything. She studied me for a moment before speaking.“I've noticed Seven changed over the last few weeks,” she began to say. “He's changed in so mamy ways I never thought possible. For a long time, hockey has been the only thing capable of holding his attention, yet recently he's started smiling more, spending less time shutting himself away, and becoming the son I knew before he became hardened by pressure.”She paused for a moment as though to let the words sink in before she continued. “I've always wondered if you've realized how much has changed since you both met,” she said, her eyes going from me to Seven, and then back to me.Embarrassed, I immediately insisted that I could not take credit for another person's choices because Seven had been the one who accepted criticism, worked harder than ever and fought his way back onto the first line."I only showed him what I saw on the ice

"And congratulations, Mikka."I blinked in surprise."Thank you.""I heard everything has been cleared. Seven told us how worried you were, and I'm honestly very happy the university finally saw the truth."I smiled faintly."Thank you. It means a lot.""I know you've had a difficult few weeks."I lowered my eyes."That's one way to describe it."She laughed softly, and somehow that made me relax."There's another reason I called though, but I'd love us to talk in person

MIKKA.I could not stop smiling as I walked back to my room. Every step felt lighter than the one before, and for the first time in a long while, it seemed like I could finally breathe without something heavy pressing against my chest. The hearing was over, my name had been cleared, and lunch with Seven had reminded me that life could still be simple even for a little while. We had laughed so much that my cheeks still hurt, and every time I remembered one of his terrible jokes, another smile found its way onto my face before I even realized it.When I reached my dorm room, I locked the door behind me and leaned against it for a few seconds, enjoying the quiet. I changed into a pair of comfortable sweatpants and an old university hoodie before carrying my hearing folder to my desk. I opened the top drawer, placed the thick file inside as neatly as I could, and slowly pushed the drawer shut. I rested my hand on it for a moment.“I'm done with you,” I whispered. It felt silly talking to
