FIVE YEARS LATER

“You should come to your sister’s engagement party, Skylar. I sent you an invitation” my mother’s voice washed over me.

“You are calling me right now because you want to invite me to your daughter’s engagement? What happened to the years before now?” I asked.

She said nothing at first but I heard her sigh.

“I did not call now for us to speak about this” She said.

Of course she didn’t

It would be the first time she had called me in five years since her husband, my father threw me out of the house to fend for myself.

He claimed if I was not ready to provide the name of the man who had knocked me up then I was better off dead to him.

Nobody pled my case as I left but five years later and I could almost laugh out loud when I looked back at that moment in my life.

Five years later and I was a self made woman.

The rich fashion designer and a mother.

I had kept the baby… well twin babies against all odds.

“I will see if I am free and fit her engagement into my schedule, mom” I told her.

The line clicked, notifying me that my mother had hung up.

I was more than infuriated by her reaction… the way she had stepped back and allowed my father do whatever he wanted. She never was one to ever stand up for either of her children and I just happened to be on the receiving end everytime.

I checked my mail for the invitation she sent.

Lucas Blackfang.

I wondered who the rich snob was.

It was a pity he would be stuck with my sister but then again, she might be the one stuck with him.

I made up my mind there and then that I was going to go to the engagement party. They were going to see what I had become and how much of my own person I was at the moment and I was going to rub my success in their faces because after all these years, I deserved that at least.

It was the day of the engagement and I decided to go with a pant suit, one I had designed myself which accentuated the hue of my eyes and the color of my hair. I got into my car, reclining in my seat with my heart pounding furiously and my breath shaky.

The ride was quiet safe for the music from the car speaker and it gave me ample time to relieve my past and how much I had struggled with everything… job after job as a pregnant teenage girl.

It had been the worst especially when I watched the news and saw my parents and sister having the time of their lives while I suffered knowing I wasn’t far away from them but they did not care.

It had not been for long however and I was better… fulfilled and thankful for my life.

“We have arrived” The driver announced.

I stepped out of my car, my chest heaving with effort. I remembered walking out of this house with nothing… just a scared little pregnant girl about to experience the world in the worst way possible with no one to help her.

I took one glance at myself in the car window; I was nothing like that girl right now and it brought joy to my heart and steel to my spine.

I walked into the party, flashing my invite with my head raised as I was escorted to my seat.

My mother saw me immediately I entered, her mouth falling open in shock.

“Skylar!” She called out.

I walked over to meet her and she surprisingly wrapped her arms around me in a hug. 

“You… I could not recognize you” She exclaimed.

“You are aging, mother” I commented.

Her eyes flashed but I put a small smile on my face, glancing around for my father.

“Hello sister” Freya muttered from behind me. “You have changed a whole lot.

“And you have not changed at all” I countered.

She said nothing to this but I could tell she was looking for a sharp retort.

“We should go backstage” My mother suggested and so we all walked backstage to meet my father.

I could see the recognition and shock flash in his eyes as he turned to me.

“I was not expecting you” He muttered, clearing his throat.

“Mother invited me and so I thought to come” I responded in the same measure.

The air was charged with tension and I basked in the surprise on all of their faces.

“Meet my fiance, sister” Freya muttered.

I spurn around, coming face to face with him…

Those stormy gray eyes have haunted my dreams since that unforgettable night.

I was staring at the stranger from the party and he was holding unto Freya, his eyes flashing with recognition

“Skylar” He murmured, more to himself than to me.

I was just about to say something… anything when the curtains backstage opened up and someone else entered.

"What is he doing here?" Freya commented, they all appeared to be shocked at the arrival of this guest. 

“I will not be missing my brother’s engagement for anything in the world” The man announced.

A gasp escaped my throat then, the fury I had been feeling earlier replaced by abject disbelief.

The other man stopped walking, his eyes happening on me and the words he had been about to say dying on his lips as recognition entered his eyes.

I looked from one man to the other, the similarities yet differences in both men suddenly clear to me.

Lucas Blackfang was the stranger from that night and he had a twin brother. While Lucas was staring at me with shock and something akin to guilt, the other man was glaring at me with hate… the intensity in his eyes searing the skin of my face.

It suddenly occurred to me the reason he had been so confused the second time we met… because it wasn’t him but the other.

What was also clear was the fact that I might have fucked both men that night and either of them could be the father of my babies.

“Do you two know each other?” Freya voiced.

“I…” Lucas started

His voice however faded into the background as I collapsed unto the floor.
