The words tore out of my throat before I could stop them, sharp enough to cut through the air between us. My palm still stung from the slap, and my eyes burned, locking on Nick’s face. His cheek was bright red, his brows pulled together in visible confusion, but that confusion only made me angrier.

I wanted him to feel what I was feeling, the heat in my chest, the rush of betrayal that made it hard to breathe.
