“No!”

The sound tore from my throat, raw and broken, shaking the walls of the room. My hands stayed on Lyra’s still body, gripping her as if my touch alone could pull her back. Her skin felt colder now. Her lips parted but no sound came. I pressed my forehead against hers, my tears falling onto her cheeks. “Lyra, please,” I whispered, voice shaking, “don’t do this to me.”

“Lyra! Wake up!”

Mirae’s voice cracked as she sobbed beside me, clutching Lyra’s limp hands like a lifeline. Her tears fell onto the sheets, mixing with the sweat and water already there. She turned to me suddenly, her face twisted with fury, her eyes bloodshot, her mouth trembling with rage and grief. “You’re so evil!” she spat, shoving at my chest with both hands. “How on earth do you have sex with someone and kill her?!”
