The piercing cry of the newborn draws Adira’s attention and she looks toward the doctor’s and nurses to find one of them holding a very tiny bundle, with skin as red as a ripe tomato, and its face scrunched up like that of an old man while he tried to bring down the building with his cries. “Why is he crying? Is he in pain?” Unaware she has spoken her thoughts loud, Adira blinks when a round of chuckle followed her words. “No darling, he is hungry,” a nurse answers, with an amused expression. Surprised that a child that just left the womb could already be hungry, Adira once again blurts out her thoughts. “Already!” The room laughs again. “How is she?” Meredith questions from her prone position, her voice slightly muffled from tiredness. The words from her best friend’s mouth sounded like a mosquito buzz inside Adira’s ears. The blonde froze and gawked at her best friend with a horrified expression, her eyes thrice their size. The room erupted into chaos. The Pack warriors rushed forward to meet the invading wolves. Transforming with their clothes on. Alpha Conor still in human form barks orders to his members directing them on what to do. Jake about to rush off to join his father in defending their people is crabbed by the Alpha before he could take a step. “Not so fast, young man,” Alpha Conor says sternly, drawing out a frown from Jake. “I need you to do something for me,” he whispers, as chaos rained around them. It feels like yesterday since Adira sat in front of her vanity mirror, prepping her face for the mating ball, and again it feels like years has flown by since that fateful day. As she stares boring into the semi curved mirror in front her, her sadness can be perceieved in her eyes. Her gorgeous green eyes, looks dulling, lacking their usual shine. Leaning against the door frame, observing his mate, as she prettied herself for out their outing is Jake. Just like the blonde, the s gorgeous teenager, now almost an adult, had an unhappy expression on his face. Things should have gotten better. After getting the life scared out of her, Adira opened her eyes to see her friends and family openly smiling at her, their eyes glowing with joy. She didn’t have the heart to disappoint them so she acted as they expected. She fakes a smile, looking at every one of them in the eyes, and pretending to share their happiness, when that word is the last thing she is feeling right at this moment. And despite Jake standing at the center of the gathered group, she somehow managed to skip his presence. Maybe because he is the last person she is thinking of right now. Her eyes catch his when he starts walking towards her, bearing a beautiful banquet of white roses, and a face full of gorgeous smiles. How dare he smile like everything is alright between them, Adira hissed in her mind, her smile faltering as Jake slowly closed the gap between them. The next day, Adira was successfully discharged from the hospital. She emerged through its swinging doors with her parents, looking drained and tired. Her ordeal is not just physical, but she looked like a woman whose soul is troubled. Not that the two adults walking ahead of her noticed, or they did, but are too much of a coward to face it, hoping that the problem would sort itself out. Adira trailed behind her parents to the car looking like the weight of the whole world is on her slim shoulders. They get to the car, and her father, Alpha Conor opens the back door for her, he doesn’t look at his daughter’s face, or interact much with her. Maybe scared of what he would see, or the direction the conversation would take. But the big ole Alpha is determined to handle this problem the coward’s way.
