Gabrielle…"

I froze.

For a moment, I couldn't breathe. Damiano stood in front of me, his body tense as he stared at the office door. The handle turned again, and my heart pounded, then the door opened.

"Gabrielle?"

I released a shaky breath. "Daniel?"

Daniel stepped inside, soaked from the rain. His hair was wet, and drops of water ran down his face. His eyes moved from me to Damiano, and he looked surprised to see him.

"I'm sorry," he said. "I didn't know you were with someone."

Damiano said no

The question hung in the air. I could feel my heart pounding against my ribs; I wasn't ready for this, at least not now.Luca stood at the top of the stairs, his small fingers gripping the wooden railing, waiting for an answer."Luca," I managed, my voice steady despite the earthquake happening inside my chest. "Go back to bed, baby. We'll talk in the morning.""But…""Please."He hesitated, looking between Damiano and me with those big, searching eyes that saw too much. Then he nodded slowly and disappeared down the hallway. The silence that followed was deafening.I turned to face Damiano. He hadn't moved; he just stood there like a statue, his hands clenched at his sides, his jaw tight."We need to talk," I said.He nodded once. "Yeah."I led him to the kitchen, away from little ears that might still be listening. I leaned against the counter, crossing my arms. "You can't make promises to them.""I know.""I mean it, Damiano." My voice came out sharper than I intended. "They're n

I pressed my palm flat against the wall, feeling the cool surface beneath my fingers as I fought to steady myself. What did I just agree to?The question circled in my mind like a vulture.I had spent so many nights convincing myself that I was done with Damiano De Luca. That the man who had believed Elena's lies and had turned his back on me when I needed him most was nothing more than a ghost I had finally learned to live without.I pushed off the wall and walked out of the de Luca Mansion. When I reached home, Luca and Lia were both asleep. I watched them for a long moment, my chest tight. They deserve better than being caught in the middle of all this.I had meant every word. But as I stood there, watching their small chests rise and fall, I realized something else… they deserved a father. And despite everything, despite every scar Damiano had left on my heart, I couldn't deny that he was trying.I closed the door softly and walked to my room.Sleep didn't come easily that night

I stood there frozen as Elena's words echoed in my skull like a warning bell I couldn't silence.A shiver crawled up my spine. Elena didn't lose gracefully; she never had."Gabrielle?"I spun around.Damiano stood at the top of the staircase. His eyes searched my face, and I knew he could see the fear I was trying to hide."What happened?" he asked, descending the stairs two at a time. "I heard voices…was that Elena?"I nodded, my throat tight."She left," I managed. "She just… left."He reached me in seconds, his hands finding my shoulders. "What did she say to you?"I looked up at him; his jaw was clenched."She said this isn't over," I whispered.Damiano's grip tightened. "What does that mean?""I don't know." I pulled away from him, wrapping my arms around myself. "But I don't trust her."He was quiet for a moment, then he said, "You're right. We shouldn't."I turned to face him…"Damiano…""I know things are complicated between us," he said, his voice low. "But Elena is a threat

Rosa stood a few feet away, her chest rising and falling like she had run to catch me. Her eyes were red and swollen, and her hands trembled at her sides."Gabrielle," she breathed. "Please… Wait."I stopped walking.Rosa took a shaky step toward me. "I'm sorry," she said. Her voice cracked with the words "I'm so sorry."I didn't move or say anything; I just watched her.She pressed her hand to her chest like she was trying to hold herself together."I believed her," Rosa whispered. "Every single lie she told about you and me, I believed her because she was your sister, and I thought… I thought family doesn't lie."A tear slipped down her cheek."But she did… She lied about everything, and I helped her hurt you more."Her voice broke completely.""I treated you badly and looked down on you because of what she told me. I never stopped to ask if she was telling me the truth.”She wiped her face with the back of her hand, but more tears kept coming."You were alone," she said. "You were

My heart was pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat.I hadn't come looking for answers or to hear the truth from the woman who had destroyed my life. But here I was…her confession should have felt like a win. Instead, it just felt heavy.I stepped into the room; my heels clicked against the marble floor, and everyone turned to look.Elena's tear-streaked face went hard the moment she saw me walking in."Gabrielle," Elena said. Her voice changed; it went soft, like she was putting on a show again.I didn't stop walking until I stood right in front of her."You wanted me punished," I said quietly."Yes." She wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand. "Now you know how I felt every single day of my life."So what?" She lifted her chin, trying to summon that old arrogance. "Are you going to cry? Run away again? That's what you always do, isn't it?"I walked closer.Damiano shifted, ready to step between us, but I held up my hand, and then he stopped."No," I said. "I'm not going t

In that silence, I heard my phone buzz on the desk and glanced at it.Damiano… For a second, I just stared at his name glowing on the screen. After everything that had happened between us, seeing his name still had a way of making my heart tighten.I picked up the phone."Hello?""Gabrielle." His voice was low."What is it?""I need to tell you something."I looked at my parents; they were both watching me."What happened?""My father wants to see you."My brows pulled together. "Matteo?""Yes."I straightened. "Why?"Damiano was quiet for a moment. "He didn't tell me everything; he only said he wanted to talk to you."I turned toward the window.Of all the people I had left behind five years ago, Matteo was the one person I had never been able to hate. He had been the only man in that mansion who had ever looked at me like I was a person. When everyone else believed Elena's lies, Matteo had sometimes stood between me and their cruel words. He had defended me when I was accused of t
