I froze as my eyes dropped to the phone in my hand; for one terrible moment, I was sure it was Damiano. Then the name "Mr. Harrison" flashed across the screen, and my shoulders sagged with relief.

I answered, my voice steadier than I felt. "Hello?"

"Mrs. Gabrielle, this is Mr. Harrison from Harrison Realty. I was wondering if everything was alright. You didn't show up yesterday."

I winced…the house viewing. How could I have forgotten? Yesterday had been full of fear and chaos.

"I'm so sorry," I

My fingers curled tighter around the blue folder, pressing it against my chest like a shield.I didn't turn around. I couldn't because if I looked at him, I knew something inside me would crack open, and I wasn't ready for that."I should go," I said again, my voice barely above a whisper. "I have a meeting in the morning, and I need to…""I know."His voice was close, but he didn't come any closer. He was keeping his distance, and I noticed."But there's something I need to say first."I closed my eyes."Damiano, please...""Just hear me out, and then you can leave, and I won't stop you."I turned slowly."Fine," I said. "Talk."He took a deep breath."I've been thinking about what you said. About us…about everything."My throat tightened."Damiano...""I loved you."The words hit me like a physical blow. I stared at him…He looked down for a moment before meeting my eyes again."I loved you before I even understood what was happening around me.""Damiano...""Please let me finish."

I didn't turn around because if I looked at him one more time, I would have stayed. I would have dropped the folder, crossed the room, and let him hold me the way I had once wanted him to.But I wasn't that woman anymore.I pulled the door open and stepped into the hallway. The cool air hit my face, and I breathed it in like I had been drowning. I heard the door click shut behind me.The night air wrapped around me as I walked to my car. I got inside but didn't start the engine. I just sat there, staring at the steering wheel, my hands trembling. He said he loved me…he said he still loved me.I closed my eyes and rested my forehead against the wheel.Five years of keeping my distance and telling myself I didn't need him. And now? Now he was standing in that house, asking for a chance I wasn't sure I could give.I started the car and drove home. The apartment was dark and Luca and Lia were already asleep. I checked on them and pulled the blanket over them before going to my room.I ch

I stared at the proposal lying on the desk as something inside me shifted.Maybe Damiano really was trying to change; he could have accepted the deal and made millions from it. Instead, he had walked away because he knew it could hurt my company.I slowly closed the proposal."Are you still there?" his voice came through the phone.I swallowed."Yes.""I didn't call to tell you what to do," he said. "It's your company. You should decide what is best for you.""I know."There was a short silence. Then he said, "Just be careful, Gabrielle."I looked at the papers again."I will." Then the call ended.I placed my phone on the desk and leant back in my chair. My eyes moved around the office. A few days ago, I had been telling myself that if Damiano wanted another chance, he would have to prove that he had changed. Maybe this was part of that proof that he had really changed.Still, I wasn't ready to trust him.Later that afternoon, my assistant reminded me about some documents I had left

The question echoed in my mind as I stood there frozen, my back pressed against the cold wood of the door.My hands were shaking.I looked down at them, watching my fingers tremble against my thighs, and I felt a sob building in my chest. Not because I was sad or scared. But because for the first time in years I don't know how I felt.I had given him one chance. The words replayed in my head like a broken record, and each time they did, a fresh wave of panic washed over me.What if I'm making a mistake? What if he hurts them? What if he hurts me again?I pressed my palms against my eyes until I saw stars, forcing myself to breathe. When I finally dragged myself to bed, I didn't sleep. I just lay there, staring at the ceiling.“If Damiano really wanted to prove he had changed, then why not give him a chance?" I said. But I wasn't going to make it easy for him.Three days later, I was standing in front of a mirror in my office, fixing the sleeve of my dress. The launch event for our ne

The question hung in the air. I could feel my heart pounding against my ribs; I wasn't ready for this, at least not now.Luca stood at the top of the stairs, his small fingers gripping the wooden railing, waiting for an answer."Luca," I managed, my voice steady despite the earthquake happening inside my chest. "Go back to bed, baby. We'll talk in the morning.""But…""Please."He hesitated, looking between Damiano and me with those big, searching eyes that saw too much. Then he nodded slowly and disappeared down the hallway. The silence that followed was deafening.I turned to face Damiano. He hadn't moved; he just stood there like a statue, his hands clenched at his sides, his jaw tight."We need to talk," I said.He nodded once. "Yeah."I led him to the kitchen, away from little ears that might still be listening. I leaned against the counter, crossing my arms. "You can't make promises to them.""I know.""I mean it, Damiano." My voice came out sharper than I intended. "They're n

I pressed my palm flat against the wall, feeling the cool surface beneath my fingers as I fought to steady myself. What did I just agree to?The question circled in my mind like a vulture.I had spent so many nights convincing myself that I was done with Damiano De Luca. That the man who had believed Elena's lies and had turned his back on me when I needed him most was nothing more than a ghost I had finally learned to live without.I pushed off the wall and walked out of the de Luca Mansion. When I reached home, Luca and Lia were both asleep. I watched them for a long moment, my chest tight. They deserve better than being caught in the middle of all this.I had meant every word. But as I stood there, watching their small chests rise and fall, I realized something else… they deserved a father. And despite everything, despite every scar Damiano had left on my heart, I couldn't deny that he was trying.I closed the door softly and walked to my room.Sleep didn't come easily that night
