AYLA BAILORE
As usual, I was given a ton of work to do during the ceremony. But that didn't stop the plans we made to escape. Emily should already be waiting for me at a hidden spot close to the pack's border. I glanced around the kitchen as soon as I was done washing the dirty dishes. The ceremony just ended and most of the pack members were still having fun and enjoying the after-party including Alpha Garrick. This was my chance to slip out without anyone noticing me. Hopefully, by the time Garrick discovered I was missing, Emily and I would be long gone. I successfully made my way out of the kitchen and took the quickest route into the woods that would take me to the pack borders. It wasn't easy running with my legs, I bet it'd be much easier if I had my wolf. Luckily I found Emily just in time with our small bag. We made our way to the end of the pack, avoiding patrolling guards. Security was not as tight at the pack borders and I sent a thanks to the Moon goddess. Then we ran, using the nearby tree as cover. I felt bad for Emily. She could have easily morphed into her wolf and covered more distance but because of me, we had to use our legs. We had gotten so far from the pack that we stopped to rest a little. I just hoped Garrick hadn't discovered we were missing yet, that would buy us some more time. I had no idea where we were but it was safe to say we were lost in the middle of a forest. But suddenly, a sharp scream pierced through the darkness. Emily and I immediately exchanged quick glances as it was coming so close to our right. We moved closer until we could see a clearing field from a close distance, and heard hush voices. I took a step closer until I could clearly see four figures. Three were huge bulky men, and the one in the middle had his hand wrapped around a woman, pinning her against a tree. “If you kill me now, you're all dead as well when the Alpha finds out. This plan is doomed from the start, does the Alpha even know that?” The woman bit out as she struggled to set herself free. “Remember slut, I'm the one in charge here,” The man in the middle muttered, sounding pissed. “And I am the one that'll be going into the palace, risking my life being close to the King. And if he learns the truth about me, I'll be the one ending up dead, Arnold,” She muttered again. “Not if we kill the King first. After all, that's why you're joining the Queen's selection, isn't it? To get closer to him. Make him fall for you if you have to, and when the time comes you kill him. That's what you've been trained for,” The man, Arnold, growled in anger. “It's still a no. I have to speak with the Alpha first before I enter into the Alpha King's den, I'll tell him you're unfit for this mission and—” Before she could finish her words, he snapped her neck mercilessly, tossing her harshly against the tree. Silence filled the air as I brought my hands to my lips to stop the shocked gasp about to escape my throat. Fuck. He killed her. He fucking killed her. I glanced back at Emily whose face was also pale from fear, after watching what had just happened. We had to leave before they saw us. We turned slowly to leave. We had only taken a few steps when one of them spoke up. “She's dead,” I heard one of the men say in the darkness. “What do we do now, Arnold? We need to act fast, if the Alpha learns she's dead, he'll kill us all,” Another said looking at the guy who seemed in charge. “Stop whining. All we have to do is find someone who can fill in her position, after all, no one is irreplaceable. And besides no one from the palace has seen her face and—” He suddenly stopped talking. I couldn't hear anything anymore and Emily and I didn't stop walking either. I thought we had covered a safe distance between us when suddenly we were surrounded by some wolves, and to my horror the three men stepped out of the woods. Two men gripped Emily, and before I could run to her aid, something hard collided against my head, forcing me to the ground and I lost consciousness. *** I wasn't sure how long I'd been out, but by the time I regained consciousness, I found my hands and legs bound to a chair, and in front of me stood the three men from earlier. My heart drummed in fear as I glanced around and couldn't find Emily. “Where's she? Where's my sister?” “Alive,” The man from earlier, Arnold, who had murdered that woman in cold blood said, stepping closer to me. “For now,” His dark eyes narrowed on me. “And if you want it to remain that way, it's your choice as well,” My lips sealed shut at the obvious threat. I knew we were doomed. There was no way they'd let us go after knowing we saw and heard everything. “Please don't hurt us,” I begged, tears slipping from my eyes as guilt rocked through me. This was all my fault, We were in this situation all because of me. “What's your name?” He leaned closer and I could see the visible scar on his face. “Ayla,” The name left my lips in a whisper but I knew he heard me. “Full name, please,” “Ayla Bailore,” “I'll keep this short, Ayla. You and your sister saw and heard something you shouldn't have tonight and that alone should cost you both your lives. But I'm willing to make an exception, that's if you do exactly as I say and you and Emily might just survive,” His words sent a shiver down my spine. He leaned closer. “Do you understand?” I nodded once and a smile covered his lips. He walked away, stopping a few inches away from the dead woman's body. Now I was up close, I could see what a beauty she was. She was dressed nicely and looked like someone from a ranking position or just maybe dressed to look that way. “It's simple. All you have to do is take her place in the palace and join the upcoming Queen's selection,” The Queen selection? I'd heard whispers about it back in Garrick's pack. It was more like a contest to choose a bride for the Alpha King since he hadn't found his mate already. Every pack was to choose a she-wolf from their pack to join the contest in the palace. Points were awarded to each contender and at the end of the day, whoever caught the interest of the King or the people became the Luna Queen. This system of choosing a queen was rare and hadn't been used in a long time. But that wasn't the problem. The real problem was, that I'd never even qualify to begin with. I was of low ranking and didn't even have a wolf at all. And just like the dead woman had said, if somehow I got caught impersonating someone else, I was as good as dead. The Alpha King wasn't just called a beast for nothing. His ruthless nature was a known knowledge. This wouldn't work. As if reading my thoughts, Arnold took a step closer in my direction. “You refuse? Well, that's fine. I guess I'll just have to kill you and your sister then,” He gestured to one of his men and immediately, Emily was dragged out from the woods, and thrown on the ground, bleeding and crying. “What did you do to her?” I struggled against the chains binding me, not that I had the strength to break them off anyway. “She's quite a stubborn one. Anyways since you've made up your mind, I guess I should start by killing her first,” “Wait,” I stopped him from taking any more steps in Emily's direction. “You don't understand, I won't even be able to last a day. I don't have a wolf, and I bet they'll be able to see through my lies,” His brow crippled. “You don't have a wolf?” I nodded. “So please, just let us go. I swear we won't say anything about what happened tonight,” He ignored my words. “Odd. I've never seen a wolfless she-wolf before. You don't smell like rogues. What pack are you from?” I paused, hesitating for a second, wondering if it was a good idea to give him more information about us. “Red River Pack,” Arnold furrowed his brow, his eyes fixed on me for a minute. “Well, that's fine. Your wolflessness is not an issue. For the first half of the contest, each contender is forbidden from using their wolves anyway. And by the time it's time for the second half, hopefully, your mission would be complete,” At his words again I froze. My mission? He meant killing the Alpha King. “Yes. Your mission in there is to get close to the Alpha King and kill him. Honestly, I don't think that'll be a problem, you're beautiful. Work your charm, warm his bed if you have too, or better still, make him fall headlessly in love with you. That'll be easier, and then when we give the order, you kill him,” My mouth was left agape. That was suicide. Even if by some twisted luck I managed to make it that far, there was no way I'd ever escape a place such as the palace after killing the Alpha King of all people. “We won't leave you hanging, I promise. We'll have people in the palace that'll extract you after your mission is complete. And of course, you'll be reunited with your dearest sister,” He smiled psychotically, moving to stand behind Emily. He grabbed her neck, but his eyes pinned on me. “I'm giving you a last chance to save your life and that of your sister. One glance at Emily and I knew I had no choice in this. I didn't know I was escaping Garrick's hell to another hell. And this was far worse because I had no idea just how I'd end up. I had a disturbing feeling in my gut that everything would blow up in my face. What if Garrick found me? What if the Alpha King discovered my true intention? What if these people betrayed me and harmed Emily? There was no guarantee I'd survive this, but again, I had no choice. My eyes went up to the moon, and I wondered just how much the goddess hated me to make me suffer so much. With tears in my eyes, I inhaled with resolve. “I'll do it,”AYLA BAILORE This was wrong. A bad idea. And it was going to be my end. I had all these thoughts as I was seated in a beautiful room and these women sent by Arnold dressed me up with the most expensive clothing and jewelry. They had even done my hair and applied some makeup. Now staring at myself in the mirror, I couldn't recognize myself. I looked different. I looked…“...Beautiful,” Arnold's deep voice startled me from behind. I jerked involuntarily, and my eyes instantly connected with his through the mirror. He cocked his head sideways, staring at me. “I knew I never made a wrong choice,” He smiled darkly. “Preparations have been made. And prospective she wolves have started making their way into the palace. We are late as it is, but I guess, it's the perfect way to make a grand entrance,” He said, but I remained quiet, having a feeling he had more to say. “I've made the right changes. You'll keep your name. Ayla Bailor of the Iron Claw Pack,” He added, and I couldn't stop the g
AYLA BAILORE I threw quick glances around but I couldn't find where the voice had come from. Or had it been my imagination? Before I could speak, I heard a sudden movement behind me and turned just in time to see a tall figure of a man stepping out from the flowers. I glanced around for a second, before bringing my attention back to him. Has he always been there?“They are not the cause of your problem, you know, and certainly not the reason you clumsily fell from up there. Someone dedicated their sweet time in raising those,” He lifted his finger, pointing at my hand and the ground. To my surprise, I was gripping a bunch of delicate flowers together in my grip, I'd even uprooted a few, I didn't even know. I'd been so caught up in my own thoughts that I… I paused suddenly, sending a quick glance at him.“I'm sorry about the flowers, but I wasn't clumsy and definitely didn't fall because I wanted to. Someone pushed me—”He cut me off with a sharp, annoying chuckle. “Because you were
AYLA BAILOREI was so dead. I felt my legs tremble as they instantly lost their strength. The King was standing right in front of us. The heat of his gaze was on me, but I dared not look. Instead, I kept my gaze fixed on the spotless sheen of the marble floor.“Alpha Arnold,” I heard the King's voice, it was huskier and deeper than I remembered a moment ago. But that wasn't what made me furrow my brows. It was the way he addressed Arnold with a streak of emotion in them. Anger maybe. He'd call him Alpha, but Arnold wasn't the Alpha of his pack. That much I knew. Or was he somehow related to the Iron Claw Pack Alpha?“Your Majesty,” Arnold mused, almost in subtle mockery, but I was sure that tone should get him killed. No one should speak to the King with such disrespect.I bit my lips immediately as I reminded myself of my own predicament.“We didn't receive your letter of interest, I didn't think the Iron Claw would be interested in something like this,”“It was a last-minute change
AYLA BAILORE Colton's eyes shifted a little behind me and it was like he was a second from passing out. That was a first. For someone as dangerous and wicked as Colton, this sight was a little bit terrifying. But I guess I should speak for myself, I couldn't see my own reflection but I was sure it was just as bad as Colton. I knew who that deep, seductive voice that held a subtle charm in it belonged to. The stranger I had openly insulted. It was King Lucian.Colton immediately let go of me, head bowed to the King, but unfortunately, I was still having great difficulty breaking from my frozen state. I didn't even know how Colton disappeared and the King had now taken his position.Warmth flowed into my body as King Lucian held my hand, and a tingling, utterly disturbing sensation ignited when he touched me on my waist, breaking me out of my frozen state. He tugged me closer to him. Too close for my liking. And too close that everyone was now sparing glances at us. If the King notic
AYLA BAILORE I stared nervously at the beautiful, magical hairpin on the dressing table in my suite. I had been led into a room after the party, and surprisingly, this would be my room until I either got kicked out or the competition came to an end. I didn't know what exactly to hope for at the moment.Lila had left me and returned to her quarters for the night, and considering how long and exhausting one night had already been, and the competition was starting tomorrow, I should be getting as much sleep as needed, instead here I was, pacing restlessly in my suite, unsure of exactly what to do or better still, how to do it. Arnold was absolutely clear again before he left, Emily's safety in his pack depended on my success tonight.I closed my eyes briefly, resting my head on the glass windows. The night's darkness covered everything, but the breeze was calming, and reassuring. You can do this Ayla. I repeated one more time before grabbing the seemingly harmless hairpin on the table
LUCIAN BLACKTHORNI could still smell her on my skin. Feel the heat of her lips on mine. She was perfect, so perfect for me if only I hadn't met her during this circus show, and she wasn't from the Iron Claw Pack and wasn't a potential spy working for my enemies.I snapped my eyes open, still lying on the bed even hours after she had left. I couldn't help but wonder what she had injected into me, and what it was supposed to do. Was it meant to kill me?Well considering she was sent by the Lannisters anything was possible, and at that thought alone, I heard my wolf, Nero growl in anger. If it had been someone else that had snuck into my room tonight especially sent by the Iron Claw Pack, they'd be lucky if they got to see the next morning light. But with Ayla, I couldn't.Nero has been pissed, agitated even ever since we found her in the garden. Our mate. The one created just for us, but unfortunately, for some reason couldn't feel the mate bond. At first, I thought she was suppressing
AYLA BAILORE “What are you doing here?” Lucian asked, his voice cool and calm, but dangerously it reminded me of the calm right before a storm.I wasn't sure who his question seemed to be directed at but his cold gaze was on me, and somewhere deep beneath, I could see the fury flames in the shadows as his gaze slipped to Arnold's hands on my shoulder and waist, pinning me to the wall. Our position was definitely as bad as it looked. It could give the wrong impression.Stylishly, I pushed Arnold away, and thankfully, he let go of me, turning to face Lucian with a lopsided smile as though they were old friends and he hadn't in fact snuck into the palace.“I don't like to repeat myself,” The king growled, and that fury flame in his eyes was a second away from emerging through the ice, sending shivers down my spine.“Your majesty—” I started, having no idea what to even say, but Arnold cut me off.“What does it look like? I was worried about her, and wanted to see for myself if she was s
AYLA BAILORE The blinding light covered my vision for a few seconds, and once I stepped out through the other side of the portal I was in a forest. There was no sign of the other contenders, nor Triss or any of the large crowd, and sadly, not even Lucian.I took out the map, tracking the direction of the closest cave, while I searched for the Moon wisp. Triss had mentioned we could find them in a certain part of the forest they considered home.I had no idea how long I'd be walking with no luck when I came across a large field of oak trees. I didn't know how but I felt it right before I saw it. The tiny flare of warm light at the bottom of the tree gave everything around them a silvery cast. A Moon wisp.Slowly, I lowered myself on one knee, bringing my palm forward to the beautiful glowing blue light. It was more beautiful than I had imagined. To my surprise, it only glowed brighter, a soft sound coming from it, almost like it was trying to communicate with me, but unfortunately, I
AYLA BAILORE I felt the hairs on my skin stand up in alert as I felt a presence behind me. I didn't need to move my head to realize who that was; my body always seemed to recognize him. "Is there any progress yet?" Killian asked. I turned to my side, my eyes dwelling on his godlike body. His piercing stare met mine. I shook my head, moving my gaze from him to the witches who were still at work. "No. They just started," I said, feeling his heavy stare on me. I folded my hands around my chest, watching as Valerie brought out a small white orb, and as they kept chanting, the orb kept glowing. It was as if I was lost in whatever the witches were doing. I really didn't notice when Killian moved closer. I turned my gaze to him, sensing a disturbing shift in the air. His amber eyes were foggy; he was being mindlinked. His eyes kept growing deadly. I waited for him to be done, and his amber eyes met mine. "Stay here!" he ordered. "Why? What's happening? " I asked in a rush. His ga
LUCIAN BLACKTHORN “It did, but the Supreme witches’ believe it has resurfaced again, along with the goddess-blessed wolf. “The powerful Moon Wolf,” I picked up some of the papers given by the witches and handed it over to Ayla. I honestly couldn't believe it but last night the Grishan witches had attacked the Supreme Fortress in search of the moonstone. They had come in large numbers, but were only able to tear down the fir.st line of enchantments and spells protecting the fortress. It had alerted the Frangilla and the other Supreme head witches, so they were able to respond quickly and wiped out the "The pack is under another attack." Killian was quick to speak, his eyes holding a cautious fear. "It's the Dark Circle. They are here for the stone," "The stone?" I repeated, my eyes traveling to the witches. I didn't know every detail of it, but I'm aware the Dark Circle is desperate to have the phoenix stone. They want all four for some reason, and so far they only have two. Ki
AYLA BAILORE I couldn't believe my eyes. Nor could I recognize the anger beating through me. I crossed over her dress, heading to the bathroom door when Lucian's angry growl rippled through the bathroom. “Get the fuck out, Serena,”I stopped instantly, impaled by another wave of shock. She was Serena. His Serena. The door suddenly burst open and a woman with black hair, and big brown eyes, in nothing but her undies scampered out of the bathroom. Fear imprinted in every inch of her face, one of her hands holding her neck as she rushed out. She stopped when she noticed me, the shock was only briefly before she snatched her dress from the floor and I noticed the burn of a handprint around her neck.Another growl rippled from the bathroom, and the door slammed shut, making her body tremble and she hurried with haste out of the room. What the hell was going on?I hurried closer, at the shattering sound of glass coming from the bathroom. “Lucian?” I tried the door but it was locked. Anothe
AYLA BAILORE I couldn't sleep the remainder of the night, I kept turning and tossing on the massive king-sized bed until the morning light soared in. Lucian had left with Soren last night and hadn't returned. It was still so early but I got out of bed and showered. I picked one of the dresses from the walk-in closet to wear and it was my exact size. I left my room and took the stairs. Lucian's mansion was huge. And it wasn't like the typical Packhouse I was accustomed to. The only people I'd seen so far were the helpers, cleaning around. Thankfully some didn't know who I was, despite the curious stares and whispers that kept coming my way. My throat felt awfully dry, so I looked around for the kitchen.“Good morning,” I said to the group of helpers that were bustling around in the kitchen, some cleaning while the rest were cooking.“Morning,” One of them replied, as she wiped the counter, her attention just like the others was on the young girl chopping some vegetables.“So did you
AYLA BAILOREI had packed just a few things I'd initially come with into small luggage that came to inform me I'd be moving into the pack tonight. King orders. Willow had told me Lucian spent more of his time at the pack than in the palace. I couldn't say, I wasn't ecstatic, or I hadn't been expecting that. I leaned forward on my leather seat as the car sped through the road in-between the woods. No doubt the same wood Emily's scarf and blood were found.“Ayla, are you okay?” I felt Marilyn's hand on me, as the car pulled up in front of a massive black gate. I nodded, keeping my eyes on the figures sitting on top of the walls, and huge wolves at either side of the gates. One of the big bulky guys jumped down with ease from the gate, his chest was bare but at least he was wearing some shorts. He approached the car, as the driver rolled down the windows.“Marilyn?” He called the woman sitting next to me. “This is odd. Why are you coming through the northern borders?”Marilyn rolled her
AYLA BAILOREInstinctively, I rose up slowly from my chair. My gaze was still locked on Lucian, as his was on me. I had no inkling as to what was going on beneath that black storm that swirled in his eyes. He took a step forward, but Dane appeared from his side, stopping him. Holding him back. For the first time in my life, I wished I had heightened hearing like the others. I was desperate to know what Dane was whispering to Lucian above the music with his eyes still stuck on me. His gaze wanted to kill. My heart was drumming hard in my chest, and slowly his eyes shifted back to Arnold who I'd forgotten was still standing next to me. Without saying a word, Lucian stormed away.Something in my gut told me to quietly stay put. I'd never seen that kind of look in Lucian's eyes. The dark storm that brewed at the back of his eyes, the gaze that wanted to kill, and his anger that had licked the surface of my skin and almost burned me. Strangely, it didn't just confuse me, it affected me so
AYLA BAILORE “What?” I blurted out in a whisper, almost frightened at the way Lucian's voice had sounded in my mind. “What about my eyes?” I cocked my head to one side. His brows furrowed in deep thought, and I almost urged him to say something when the crowd suddenly burst into cheers and applause.“We'll talk later,” Lucian's voice penetrated my mind. I bit my lips in an attempt to stop the abrupt gasp that almost left my lips at the sparks that zapped across my skin as Lucian held my hand, turning to the large crowd. It has gotten more intense than I had ever felt. I wasn't sure if this was what happened when one took a chosen mate, or if it was because of the fact that despite not officially bearing his mark yet, Lucian and I had in every way marked each other by drinking each other's blood. That must be the reason I felt so intensely for him now, other than the usual attraction I'd always felt. This was dangerous.I looked away from his penetrating eyes, which attempted to pry i
AYLA BAILORE As I walked through the portal at the northern gates, I could already feel the shift in the air. Something was wrong. And it felt really bad. Three warriors were waiting for me there, along with a witch who was usually with Triss and also Dane. “Ayla!” He rushed over to me, as soon as he saw me, surprising me by pulling me in for a hug. He let out a quick sigh scanning my body for any injuries before glancing back at the portal gates. His sharp questioning eyes returned back to me. “Where's Lucian?” I shook my head. “He left me at the northern gates. I think he went back to hunt the wolves who had somehow gotten into the woods,” “Fuck!” Dane cursed under his breath. “I'm glad you're at least fine,” I looked around, the place was almost in a chaotic mess. “What happened here?” Dane held my arm, leading me away. “Some packs and a few kingdoms were attacked in the West. Some of its survivors fled here seeking asylum,” He informed me, and my lips parted in shock. Dane l
AYLA BAILORE I groaned, almost in satisfaction, from the tingling flutters that ignited throughout my body. It was dark. I could hear owls hooting and the faint sounds of distant howls. I snuggled deeper into the warm, soothing feeling that blanketed my body. I wanted to stay like this forever, but a small whisper at the back of my mind kept telling me to wake up.I was surrounded by darkness the instant I snapped my eyes open. I could barely see a thing, and couldn't move either. It took me a second before the last few hours kept rushing back. The grey creatures. The fight… and I fell.I attempted to jerk up but that was impossible. I was being cocooned in a tight, warm grip by Lucian. He had me pressed into his chest and arms wrapped protectively around me. He must have jumped after me when I fell off the cliff.“Lucian…” I called, but there was no response. No movement. My chest constricted in fear when I couldn't hear his heartbeat. With great effort, I untangled myself from his
