Elara's POV

The morning sun was barely peeking through the hospital blinds when I threw off my covers and started gathering my things. My body ached all over, and my head still throbbed from the concussion, but I couldn't stay in that room another minute. Adrian's threats kept echoing in my mind, making my skin crawl every time I remembered his cold laughter.

I hurried down the hallway, my legs still unsteady from yesterday's ordeal. Sarah was waiting by the nurses' station, her arm in a sling but looking much better than she had the night before.

"Ma'am, you should rest more," she said, worry creasing her forehead.

I shook my head firmly. "You need to go home and rest properly. I'm fine." My voice came out rougher than I intended. "But first, I need to check on our driver."

We spent the next hour at his bedside. He was conscious but weak, hooked up to machines that beeped steadily. The doctors said he was stable but needed time to recover from whatever he'd ingested. My stomach twist

  • FROM SCUMBAG EX TO SCUMBAG HUSBAND   Ch-40

Elara's POVI opened my eyes slowly, blinking against the afternoon sunlight streaming through my bedroom windows. My body felt much better than it had this morning - the throbbing in my head had dulled to a manageable ache, and my muscles didn't feel like they'd been run over by a truck anymore.I sat up in bed, stretching my arms above my head, when I nearly jumped out of my skin. Killian was sitting on the cushioned chair in the corner of my room, his long legs stretched out in front of him, scrolling through his phone like he owned the place. My heart hammered against my chest from the shock. "Welcome to earth, sleeping princess," he said without looking up from his screen, a smirk playing at the corners of his mouth.I rubbed my eyes, still trying to process what I was seeing. "What are you doing here?" My voice came out rougher than I intended, thick with sleep. He finally looked up, his dark eyes meeting mine. "I came to pick you up. You were sleeping, and I didn't want to dist

Killian's POVI stared at my phone after ending the call with Elara, shaking my head slowly. What a weird lady. She couldn't wait to get out of that hospital fast enough. One minute she's unconscious from a car accident, the next she's running home like the place was on fire.My jaw clenched as I leaned back in my leather office chair. Something didn't feel right about that accident. The timing was too convenient, too suspicious. My gut was telling me there was more to it than just a simple crash.I reached for my desk phone and dialed Marcus, my head of security. He picked up on the first ring."Sir?""I need you to prepare bodyguards for my wife," I said, my voice low and serious. "But do it quietly. She can't know she's being followed. Make sure they're the best we have - invisible but effective.""Understood, sir. How many men?""Three shifts. I want her covered twenty-four seven." My fingers drummed against the wooden desk. "And Marcus? If anything happens to her, anything at all

Elara's POVMy heart nearly stopped beating. Six months? The words echoed in my head like a broken record. My hands started shaking as I stared at my aunt's face, searching for any sign that this was some cruel joke."Six... six months?" I stammered, my voice barely a whisper. My throat felt like sandpaper.Suddenly, my aunt's face broke into a smile. Then she started laughing - actually laughing like she'd just told the funniest joke in the world."Oh honey, I'm just joking!" she said between giggles, wiping tears from her eyes. "You were only out for a few minutes."Relief flooded through me so fast I felt dizzy. My whole body went limp against the hospital pillows. "Aunt, that wasn't funny at all," I said, my voice shaking with leftover fear. She squeezed my hand gently, her laughter fading into a warm smile. "I'm sorry, dear. I couldn't help myself. But I'm so glad you're fine." Her face grew more serious. "You should visit home soon. Your grandfather is really worried about you."

Elara's POVI stared at Killian, my heart pounding against my chest like it was trying to escape. His face looked so worried, so desperate, but I couldn't understand why. My head was spinning from the accident, from seeing my driver collapse, from all the blood and chaos."Stop confusing me, Killian," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. My hands were trembling at my sides. His eyebrows furrowed together. "What do you mean?"My chest tightened with frustration. The emotions I'd been holding back all day came rushing to the surface like a broken dam. "An hour ago... you were being all weary and distant and professional. Calling me 'Miss Elara' like I was some stranger." My voice cracked as I spoke. "But now you're acting like a doting husband."I could feel tears stinging my eyes, but I blinked them back. My jaw clenched as I continued. "Is it all for show too? Letting the public know how good and loving you are while the receiver knows exactly what your intentions are?"Killian's

Killian's POVI stood there staring at Elara's broken phone on the concrete, my whole world crashing down around me. My hands were shaking so violently I could barely hold my own phone. My heart was beating so fast I felt like I might collapse."Search everywhere!" I shouted to my men who had just arrived. My voice cracked with desperation. "Check behind every tree, every building. She has to be somewhere!"My legs felt weak as I stumbled around the crash site. Glass crunched under my feet with every step. The metallic smell of blood mixed with gasoline made my stomach turn."Sir!" one of my men called out. "I'll contact all the police stations and hospitals in the city. Check for any emergency patients brought in."I nodded, my throat too tight to speak. My chest felt like someone was sitting on it, crushing all the air out of my lungs. I couldn't think straight. All I could see was that blood on the broken glass.A man in work clothes approached me hesitantly. His face looked worrie
