"You're no longer Alpha."

The woman's words hit Cengiz like physical blows. I saw him stagger—just slightly, just for a moment—before his warrior's discipline took over and his face went blank.

"By whose authority?" His voice was calm, but I could hear the fury beneath.

"The pack's authority." The woman stepped closer, and I could see her more clearly now—sharp features, cold gray eyes, salt-and-pepper hair pulled back in a severe braid. She was older than Cengiz, and she carried herself with the confidence of someone who'd waited a long time for this moment. "You've been gone too long, chasing ghosts and prophecies. The pack needs a leader who's present. Who puts them first."

"I've always put the pack first."

"Have you?" Her gaze moved to me, and something flickered in those cold eyes. "Or have you been putting your daughter first? The half-blood you abandoned eighteen years ago?"

I felt Stellan move closer to me, a wall of warmth and protection. His hand found mine, squeezing gently.

Cengiz's jaw tightened. "Aylin. Don't do this."

"Done." Aylin smiled, and there was no warmth in it. "The vote was unanimous. Well..." She glanced at the wolves behind her. "Almost unanimous. There were a few dissenters. They've been dealt with."

Dealt with. The words sent ice through my veins.

"What did you do to them?" I demanded, stepping forward.

Aylin's gaze shifted to me, and I felt the weight of her assessment—measuring, judging, finding me wanting. "The half-blood speaks. How charming." She looked back at Cengiz. "She has your fire. And your poor judgment."

"Answer the question."

"Exiled. All three of them. They're on their own in these mountains. If they survive, they survive. If not..." She shrugged. "Not my concern."

Cengiz moved then—so fast I barely saw it. One moment he was beside me, the next he had Aylin by the throat, his face inches from hers.

"You exiled my loyal wolves? Wolves who've served the pack for decades?"

Aylin didn't struggle. Didn't flinch. She simply smiled, even with his hand around her throat. "Kill me, and you prove everything I've said about you. That you're ruled by emotion. That you put personal loyalty above pack good. That you're unfit to lead."

For a long, terrible moment, Cengiz's hand tightened. I saw the struggle in his eyes—the urge to end her warring with the knowledge that she was right.

Then he released her.

Aylin stumbled back, gasping, but her smile never wavered. "Wise choice. Now—you have until sunset to leave Bozkurt territory. Take your half-blood daughter and her ice wolf mate. Go north, go south, go anywhere. But if you're still here when the sun touches the horizon, we'll consider it an act of war."

She turned and walked away without looking back. The wolves behind her parted to let her pass, then closed ranks, blocking our path.

Cengiz stood motionless, staring at nothing.

"Father." I moved to his side. "Father, look at me."

He turned, and in his eyes I saw something I never expected to see: defeat.

"I failed them," he whispered. "All of them. The pack. Your mother. You." He shook his head slowly. "I thought I could protect everyone by keeping secrets, by making deals, by staying away. And all I did was lose everything."

"You haven't lost me."

He looked at me then, really looked, and something in his expression shifted. Hope? Pride? I couldn't tell.

"No," he said softly. "I haven't lost you. And I won't." He straightened, some of the old fire returning to his eyes. "But Aylin's right about one thing—we need to move. Now. Before she changes her mind about giving us until sunset."

We gathered our supplies quickly—what little we had. Elif slipped away from the Bozkurt group and joined us without a word, her healing kit slung over her shoulder. Two other wolves followed—younger, nervous, but determined.

"The exiles," Elif explained quietly. "We're going with you."

Cengiz nodded, gratitude flickering in his eyes. "Then let's go. North. To the North Star lands."

We walked.

The snow was deep, the cold biting, but we pushed forward. Stellan stayed close to me, his strength returning with every hour. Cengiz took point, scouting the path ahead. Elif and the other exiles brought up the rear, watching for pursuit.

By midday, we'd put enough distance between us and Aylin's wolves to breathe easier. We found shelter in a small stand of pines and stopped to rest.

Stellan pulled me aside. "You're tired. And you're still not controlling your shifts properly."

"I know." I'd felt it during the flight—my wolf surging at unexpected moments, triggered by fear and adrenaline. "I've never been able to control her. She just... happens."

"She won't happen anymore." He sat on a fallen log, pulling me down beside him. "I'm going to teach you."

"Now? We're running for our lives."

"Exactly." His blue eyes were serious. "You can't afford to have your wolf betray you at a critical moment. You need to be in control. Always."

I wanted to argue, but he was right. Every time I'd shifted during our journey, it had been involuntary—a reaction to danger, not a choice. That couldn't continue.

"Okay," I said. "Teach me."

He smiled—that rare, beautiful smile. "Close your eyes."

I did.

"Breathe. Deeply. Feel the air moving in and out of your lungs."

I breathed.

"Now feel inside yourself. Find the place where your wolf lives. Not as an enemy, not as something separate—as a part of you. Like your heart, your lungs, your hands."

I searched. At first, nothing—just darkness and the sound of my own breathing. But then, slowly, I felt her. A presence. Warm and wild and familiar.

"I feel her," I whispered.

"Good. Don't fight her. Don't try to control her. Just... acknowledge her. Let her know you see her."

I did. And something shifted. The presence moved closer, curious now instead of defensive.

"Now," Stellan's voice was soft, guiding, "ask her to show you what she can do. Not to take over—to share."

I opened myself to her, and suddenly I was flooded with sensation. Stellan's scent—pine and smoke and that indefinable something that was just him. I could smell him from across the clearing, could taste him on the air. His warmth, his presence, his very essence surrounded me.

The feeling was intoxicating. Empowering.

"Open your eyes," Stellan said.

I did—and gasped.

Everything looked different. Sharper. Colors were more vivid, details more distinct. I could see individual snowflakes falling, could track their paths through the air.

And when I looked at Stellan, I saw him differently too. Not just his physical form, but something deeper—an aura of warmth and strength that wrapped around him like a second skin.

"What's happening?" I breathed.

"You're shifting. Partially." He smiled. "Look at your hands."

I looked down. My hands were still my hands—but not. The nails had lengthened into claws, sharp and deadly. Fur was beginning to sprout along my arms.

"I did this?" I whispered. "On purpose?"

"You did this. You're controlling it."

I focused, and the claws retracted. The fur faded. I was myself again.

Tears filled my eyes. All my life, my wolf had been an enemy—unpredictable, uncontrollable, a mark of my half-blood status. And now, with Stellan's help, I'd made her an ally.

"That was amazing," I breathed.

"That was you." He pulled me close, kissing my forehead. "You're amazing."

I laughed—actually laughed—for the first time in what felt like forever. In that moment, despite everything, I was happy.

The camp was in chaos when Lyra pushed through the entrance. Wolves ran in every direction, their voices sharp with alarm, their bodies tense with the expectation of violence. Fires had been knocked over in the confusion, sending sparks into the night sky. Tents had been trampled, supplies scattered. The prisoners were gone.Dag met her at the center of the clearing, his face pale beneath the grime of battle. "They escaped about an hour ago. We tried to stop them, but there were too many. Kael organized the breakout. He knew exactly where the guards would be, when they would change shifts. He planned this."Lyra looked around at the chaos, at the wolves who were still searching, still shouting, still trying to regain control. "How many got away?"Dag's jaw tightened. "All of them. Every prisoner we were holding."Stellan moved to stand beside her, his body tense, his eyes scanning the darkness beyond the camp. "They couldn't have gone far. The mountains a

The stranger at the edge of the camp did not move. She stood with her hands at her sides, her head slightly bowed, her breath misting in the cold air. She was young, perhaps sixteen or seventeen, with dark hair pulled back from a face that was trying very hard to be brave. Her clothes were torn, her boots worn through, her fingers red with cold. She had been walking for a long time.Lyra studied her from across the clearing. The guards had their hands on their weapons, their bodies tense, ready to act if the girl made any sudden moves. But the girl just stood there, waiting, her eyes fixed on Lyra with an intensity that felt almost familiar."I've been looking for you," the girl said again. "The half-blood who united the packs. The wolf who broke the prophecy." She took a step forward, and the guards shifted closer. "I need your help."Lyra held up her hand, and the guards stopped. "Who are you?"The girl swallowed. "My name is Mira. I come from the south

  • FROZEN BONDS: THE HALF-BLOOD'S MATE   Chapter 81: The Aftermath

The snow fell softly on the camp, covering the scars of battle, hiding the blood that had been spilled, softening the edges of grief that still cut deep. Three days had passed since Ronan had drawn his final breath. Three days since the pack had howled their victory. Three days since the world had begun to learn what peace felt like. The morning was gray and cold, the sky heavy with clouds that promised more snow before nightfall. Wolves moved through the camp with quiet purpose, their voices low, their steps careful. The celebration was over. What remained was the harder work of mourning.Lyra stood at the edge of the clearing where the funeral pyres had burned. The ground was still blackened, the snow melted away in a wide circle, leaving bare earth that smelled of smoke and ash and something older. Loss. She could taste it in the air, feel it settling into her bones like the cold that never quite left this place.Bjorn's pyre had been the largest. The Elder h

The messenger's words echoed in the cold air, settling into my chest like something that would never leave."The Watcher is gone. It disappeared into the forest. It said it was going home. It said the half-blood had done what it could not. It said it was time to rest."I stood at the edge of the lake, Stellan's hand in mine, and felt the weight of those words press down on me. The Watcher was gone. The old ones were defeated. The prophecy was fulfilled. But something was still missing. Something that had been chasing me since before I was born."What does it mean?" I asked. "The Watcher is free?"Stellan was quiet for a moment. Then: "It means the half-blood who came before has finally found peace. It means the prophecy is complete. It means the future is ours to build."I looked at the forest, at the darkness where the Watcher had disappeared. "I hope it finds what it's looking for."He pulled me close, his arms wrapping around me. "It alre

The Elder's words hung in the cold air, sharp and terrible, settling into my chest like ice."The old ones are coming. They've been waiting for this moment. Waiting for the half-blood to become what she was meant to be. And now they're coming to destroy her."I stood at the edge of the camp, Stellan's hand in mine, and felt the weight of those words press down on me. The old ones. The wolves who had been watching since before the wolves came to these lands. The wolves who had been waiting for this moment since before I was born."What do they want?" I asked. "What do they want from me?"The Elder stepped closer, her face pale, her eyes bright. "They want to see if you're real. If the prophecy is real. If the half-blood who chose love over fear can do what none have done before." She touched my face, her fingers cold against my skin. "They want to see if you can survive what's coming."I looked at the forest, at the darkness beyond. "Then let them come."---The attack came at dawn.Th

The wolf who had fired the arrow knelt before me, her hands raised, her face pale. "I came to surrender. I came to tell you the truth. I wasn't working alone. There are others. Others who want to destroy everything you've built."I stared at her, the pendant warm against my chest, Bjorn's sacrifice still fresh in my mind. "Who? Who sent you?"She looked up at me, and I saw the fear in her eyes. Not fear of me. Fear of what was coming. "The old ones. The ones who have been watching since before the wolves came to these lands. They don't want peace. They don't want the packs to unite. They want—"She stopped. Her eyes went wide. Her body went rigid. And then she fell.---The arrow came from the forest, dark and fast, aimed at her heart. I caught her as she fell, my hands pressing against her wound, my voice rising. "No. No, no, no."She looked up at me, her eyes fading, her body trembling. "They're coming," she whispered. "They're coming for you. They're coming for everything you've bu
