[PRESENT DAY]
“Call Leader Kael! She has finally woken up!”
A woman’s voice pierces through the fog in my mind as I struggle to open my eyes. A sharp gasp escapes my lips, the cold surrounding me is bone-deep. I feel like I’m made of ice.
I manage to crack my eyelids open just enough to see a flurry of movement through a thick glass wall. Several people are rushing out of a crooked wooden door.
"Should we open the pod?" a male voice asks. He stands beside a tall woman with long silver hair.
"No. Not until Kael instructs us. You know how stern he is with her."
Her? Who’s her? Is that… me?
Where am I?
I try to sit up but realize I'm enclosed in what looks like a glass pod. Ancient markings are etched across its surface. A silver ring lies beside me, adorned with the same inscriptions, resting on a bed of rose petals.
"What are these?" I whisper, squinting.
Don’t worry. You are safe.
The voice comes from inside me.
My eyes snap open in terror. What was that? Did someone just speak through my head?
I try to calm myself, hoping it was just a hallucination.
As I take in my surroundings, I realize the wooden room is laced with snow, clinging to the corners and edges like frostbite. A towering shelf holds rows of strange potions in ancient vials. The place looks like something from an occult fantasy.
"Leader Kael!" the woman announces as a man storms through the warped wooden door.
The moment his eyes meet mine, he stops.
He stares at me with wide, striking brown eyes. His eyes are the softest things I have ever looked into, and despite the gentleness, his whole masculine body is upright and intimidating.
"Open it," he commands.
The silver-haired woman nods, presses a button, and the glass slowly retracts with a hiss. A wave of freezing air crashes over me, and I shiver violently.
Kael notices this and presses something against the wall—a thermostat. He then walks to me, eyes never leaving mine.
"Don’t worry. You’ll get used to the cold." His voice is deep and rough, sending a chill through me more than the temperature ever could.
He smells like death. His entire presence radiates power and menace. He’s dressed entirely in black, his long coat brushing the snow-dusted floor. When my gaze reaches his ears, I freeze. They’re not human. Pointed. Perfect. Inhumanly beautiful—and terrifying.
"Where am I?" I croak, attempting to sit upright, shocked by how much strength I suddenly have.
"In the FrostLands," the woman answers when Kael stays silent.
“FrostLands?” I gape at her in confusion.
She smiles. “You'll understand soon enough.” She nudges Kael. “Why don't you tell her?”
“There’s nothing to tell her," he responds, voice clipped. He bends down, retrieving the ring.
"You can’t go cold on her now," she teases. "You’re the one who’s been waiting for her to wake up."
Kael throws her a sharp look. Her smile falters, and she bows her head, and I swear, I hear her whine like a dog.
He inspects the ring, running a thumb over the center diamond. "Go check on the Watchers. Now that she’s awake, we’re more vulnerable."
Everyone in the room nods and quickly files out, leaving us alone.
Kael turns to me. "Give me your hand."
I instinctively hide them behind me. I don’t know who he is. Why I’m here. Why I can’t remember anything except… I’m human. Or I used to be.
"Not until you tell me who you are. And where the hell I am."
Gasps fill the room, one from the last person who just exited. She looks at me like I signed my own death sentence.
Kael’s gaze shifts to her and she quickly slips out, shutting the door behind her.
“I am Kael,” he responds and reaches for my hand. The moment he touches me, it's almost like I'm struck by lightning. I jolt.
I see flashes of myself thrown through glass and landing on a wolf’s body in the air.
“Just Kael. Alpha of the FrostLands. And you are in my territory.” He takes hold of my fingers again after I pull away. “Is that all you need to know?”
“How did I get here?”
“I brought you here,” he says nonchalantly, a small smile twitching on his lips as he slides the ring onto my finger. “Now that’s better.”
I panic at what he's done and quickly disengage my hand from his grip. I try to take the ring off, but it only burns me when I try.
Kael looks offended and annoyed at the same time. “You’ll hurt yourself if you try to take it off,” he hisses.
“How dare you put a ring on my finger!” I say, my heart racing with worst-case scenarios.
“Because you are my Luna. My mate. Mine.” He growls and grabs my hand again as I continue trying to remove the ring.
I look at my finger, expecting to see blood from the burn, but to my horror, the wound starts healing on its own.
I gasp. “What’s this?” I stare at him in bewilderment, expecting him to be as surprised as I am, but he's not.
“I can’t explain everything to you all at once.”
“I am in the underworld, aren’t I?”
“No. You are very much alive,” he counters. “You are just stronger and different than you were five years ago. You are your true self now, Diana.” He steps closer, for once breaking his toughness as he cups my neck. “More powerful than you could have ever imagined and I promise to help you get the revenge you deserve.”
I stare into his eyes, they are silver now. His eyes are silver! Veins are bulging from his head, like touching me is inflicting something on him.
“Shit! Shit! Shit!” he growls, slowly closing his eyes. “Very soon, I’ll be able to have full access to you. That bastard knew exactly what he was doing injecting you with liquid kryptonite.”
He opens his eyes and pulls away, gritting his teeth.
I open my mouth to ask what the hell he’s talking about, but a little girl’s squeal cuts me off.
“Daddy!”
Kael goes rigid as tiny arms wrap around his legs. A child. She's hidden behind his tall posture, so I’m unable to see her face.
Kael looks at me in discomfort. “Xiana, I thought I warned you not to come here,” he swallows.
“I was looking for you, and since no one wanted to answer me, I knew you'd be here with Mummy.”
TANDON’S POVShe didn’t come for breakfast. I clench my fists under the table. She really strikes my nerves somehow, and it just makes me want to drag her to bed and punish her again. It seems that’s the only way she ever submits to me.I shut my eyes, elbows on the dining table, and run a hand through my hair. I drag out a breath. My filthy mind trails back to last night. I admit I’ve always wanted to see what was under those clothes the moment I saw her, and goddess, she had the most gorgeous body I’ve ever laid eyes on.A body I want to make mine forever. I didn’t do exactly what I wanted to because I was too pissed when she kept whimpering Kael’s name.My nails dig into my flesh. That tyrant’s name. I should’ve known there was something between them. The way she looked whenever his name was mentioned said it all. I wanted it to be my name spilling from her lips in pure, pleasurable delight.I wanted her to worship me as I devoured her, but...“Sh1t!” I slam my fists against the ta
DIANA'S POVIsode slowly steps into the room, her hair all messed up and a deep bite mark on her neck. Her gaze shifts to the bed, to the duvet wrapped around my body, before locking onto my eyes.“I just saw Tandon stepping out. What happened in here?”I clench my fists at her words. Going out with her was a huge mistake. She’s the reason I’m in this mess in the first place. I went out to clear my head, and I ended up making everything worse.I wince as pain strikes through my skull. I walk back to the bed and sit down, clutching my head.“Did you and my brother have s*x?”I don’t respond. Saying anything could put me in more trouble. I don’t know what she’s capable of or if she’s even worse than Tandon. Telling her anything would only make things worse.“Oh my goddess!” she gasps, rushing to sit next to me. She places her hand on my lap, and I shudder. “You slept with my brother?”Control yourself, Diana. If not for yourself, then for your daughter and for him, the only person who t
DIANA'S POVI groan loudly, shifting on the bed. Pain. So much pain engulfs my whole body from my head to my legs.Something is weeping inside me. Xia.‘Diana, what have we done? We failed our mate. We've hurt him.’ she cries restlessly.‘What do you—’I freeze when my hand touches something—someone lying next to me. My eyes snap open, and horror floods over me when I see Tandon sleeping beside me.My wide eyes trail down his body only to realize he’s completely naked. I look at myself under the duvet, and I’m… I’m naked.I gasp and jump off the bed, wrapping the duvet tightly around me. The pain in my legs and head becomes even more excruciating. Tandon stirs on the bed and slowly opens his eyes.No. No. No. Goddess, no. How did he get here? I was… I was with Kael last night. I… I…“Good morning, Diana,” Tandon greets with a frown, sitting up and groaning.“What… are you doing in my room and on my bed?”He scoffs, running a hand through his hair. “Last I checked, this mansion—as well
KAEL'S POVI stir on the cold ground.‘Kael.’‘Kael.’I'm sensing Diana calling my name. I feel her yearning for me. Jayden is stirring inside me; he wants to transform. He wants to go to her.‘Jayden, heal. She no longer belongs to us,’ I say through gritted teeth. The fact that I can't respond to her call makes me freaking unnerved. But why would she call after me? I must be hallucinating. She made it clear she wanted nothing more to do with me. I brought her out of her torture, and now I’m of no use to her. She took advantage of everything I felt for her—every emotion I tried to control but couldn’t.When I think of how low I’ve brought myself because of her, and how she self-righteously told me she never felt anything for me, I want to skin myself alive.I sit up when the ground becomes too cold to bear. There's no spectrum of light in here. I don't know how long I've been trapped. It feels like a week—or maybe even a month—of listening to the madness-driving silence of this place
DIANA'S POVI hit my head on the seat in front of me and groan loudly. Why is it so hot in here? The window is open, yet it's still boiling.I wish I wasn’t wearing this dress. It’s so uncomfortable.I untie the sleeves of the sweater from around my waist and pull it off. That should help a little.'Diana,' Xiana breathes inside me, equally uncomfortable.I shift restlessly in my seat. My thighs are probably soaked in sweat by now. Why is this car so freaking hot? Gosh, I need to get home. It was just sunset when we left, how did it get so dark so suddenly?'Diana, we need him. We need our mate,' Xiana groans in need.I don’t know what was in that drug, but I think I’m losing my mind. My fingernails dig into the seat as I clench it tightly. I need Kael. I need to be with him. My whole body aches for him, for his touch.“All right,” Tandon announces as he opens the car door and climbs into the front seat. “We’re leaving without my sister.”My blurred gaze shifts to the claw mark on his
DIANA'S POVWhy is he here?My gaze flickers over to the guards when I realize they’re looking at me. Their haughty eyes scan over my body, deep scowls on their faces.' You’re going to pay for disobeying us, rogue,' the bald one mouths silently. They both laugh and disappear into one of the many parked cars. Maybe it was a bad idea coming here. I don't give a damn about their threats, but this place just unnerves me and now the fact that Tandon and those guards are here…I came here to cool down, not to get into trouble. I’m so tired of all the conflict.“Diana!” Isode chirps from behind me. I turn to see her smiling brightly. She’s with the male, his arm wrapped around her waist while he grins at me, sipping whatever’s in the cup he’s holding.“This is Claude. Claude, Diana,” she introduces cheerfully. “He's my mate. We've been together since I came here. Just waiting for him to make it official!”Oh, they’re mates. I fold my arms across my chest, feeling a sting in my heart.“Still
