Chapter 2

Author: Summer Sway
Hearing their accusations, I felt a swirl of emotions. Just like that with a single photo, everyone turned on me.

Autumn paused for a moment, then continued reading from my diary.

"But she didn’t seem to hate me," she read. "She wiped her sweaty palms and nervously reached out her hand to me. But I rejected her."

Autumn’s voice wavered a little. "She froze, then asked me in a tiny voice if I didn’t like her.

"I remembered that moment. I had opened my mouth to speak, to explain, but Mom and Dad's angry voices had shattered the moment.

"Mom: Autumn just got home today. Can't you stop acting like some spoiled little princess?

"Dad: Do you even know what Autumn’s been through these past twenty years? If it wasn't for the hospital screwing things up, you'd be the one who suffered!

"I stood there, stunned. Just the night before, they had held me, reassured me, sworn that even with Autumn back, their love for me wouldn't change. Yet, because I hesitated to shake her hand, their true feelings spilled out, raw and cutting.

"But…

"All I could think about at the time was Autumn's embarrassment. I had seen the rough calluses on her hands, and I worried that she’d feel ashamed."

Autumn’s voice faltered for a moment as she read, her eyes flashing with something unsteady.

She bit her lower lip unconsciously.

My mother suddenly seemed to realize how this sounded. She jerked her head up and blurted out, "I—well, maybe I did say those things, but later she crossed so many lines, I had no choice!

"If she was really looking out for Autumn, then why didn’t she explain? She's just making excuses for herself!"

Dad pulled her close and whispered, "It’s over, Carol. She’s dead. She paid for what she did."

Franklin frowned and cut in sharply. "She obviously just couldn't handle Autumn coming home. She was scared Autumn would take her place," he said.

Autumn smiled faintly, but didn’t say a word. Instead, she flipped to the next page of the journal.

March 15, 2024.

The screen behind her flashed to life again, showing a photo of Franklin crouching on the ground, tying my shoelaces.

Autumn began reading again, "Franklin came over today. The first thing he said was... he wanted to break off our engagement.

"He said now that the real daughter of the Westwoods had returned, there was no way he would marry a fake. But hadn’t he always said he loved me? That our marriage wasn’t about the families but about us?

"We had known each other for over twenty years. Was all of that... nothing?

"I ran out to find him. I had to know why. And I overheard him on the phone, laughing with his friends.

"'Ginger Westwood? She’s a fake who actually thought she was somebody. She’s just for fun. If you want a marriage alliance, you marry the real deal.'

"Then, he laughed harder. 'Yeah, it’s a shame though. I wasted five years on her, treated her like a princess, and she wouldn't even let me touch her. She really thought she was some untouchable goddess. But Autumn? She looks like she’ll be a lot easier to get.'"

As Autumn finished reading, the wedding hall was completely silent, the weight of her words pressing down on everyone present.

That was the moment the truth crashed down on me. Every sweet word, every gesture of devotion from Franklin, had been a lie. The depth of his betrayal left me reeling, my heart shattered into a million pieces.

I had thought about telling Mom and Dad. However, every time I even mentioned Franklin’s name, they would immediately accuse me of being jealous of Autumn. They never gave me a chance to explain and defend myself.

But what about Autumn? How could I stand by and let her marry someone like that? Would she even believe me?

At this point, Autumn glanced sideways at Franklin.

He swallowed hard, then barked out, "She’s just jealous you were marrying me! She made all this crap up!"

Mr. and Mrs. Cordon shot up from their seats, their faces contorted with fury.

"If our son really said those things," Mrs. Cordon shrieked, "then how do you explain her drugging Franklin to get into his bed?!"

A wave of murmuring swept through the guests.

"Yeah, remember?" someone whispered. "At Autumn’s birthday party, Ginger slipped something into Franklin’s drink. The next morning, she demanded he marry her. She’ll never live that down."

Autumn gave a small nod.

"Yeah," she said softly, her voice sharp as a knife. "Why did she have to do something like that?"

Mom was crying, pointing at the Cordons with an accusatory finger and shouting, "If it hadn't been for you Cordons framing Gingy—lying, saying she tried to steal from Autumn—we never would've treated her that way!"We never would’ve driven her away… My Gingy… she must’ve been in so much pain…"A wave of understanding washed over me. Mom regretted it too.But I’m dead now. I can’t hug you anymore.Autumn stepped in front of Mom and said, "Mom, Gingy never tried to take anything from me. Because she was richer than me in every way!"As she spoke, she held out her hand, revealing the calluses on her palm. "Gingy was right. If she had ever touched my hand and felt these calluses, I would’ve been ashamed. She just didn’t know how to express herself. It wasn’t that she didn’t love.""So many nights, I lay awake, regretting that on her birthday, I didn’t say one word for her, not even a single sentence…""Autumn…" Mom, heartbroken, tried to reach for her hand, but Autumn pulled away.

I saw Mr. and Mrs. Cordon slump into their chairs, their faces ashen with despair. My parents' expressions shifted. My mom suddenly shot to her feet and pointed at Franklin's nose, yelling, "What is the meaning of this? Is this how the Cordon family treats my daughter?!"My dad was even more furious. Veins bulged on his forehead as he stormed up to Mr. Cordon, looking like he was about to punch him. "How dare you treat my daughter like that?!"However, Autumn raised a hand to signal everyone to quiet down. She was determined to finish reading my diary. He threatened me. I didn’t dare speak. Then, one of the men beside him looked me up and down with disgusting eyes and said he’d never tried a bald girl before. That animal, Franklin, actually pulled out the video he had secretly taken that night and laughed as he said, "It felt great."Hearing that, I froze. The memories of that night came rushing back, a dam bursting. I was on the verge of breaking down. The video showed me being

Franklin’s face went pale in an instant. He lunged forward, snatching the journal from Autumn’s hands and slamming it to the ground.“Enough!” he shouted. “Stop reading!”“A union between the Cordons and the Westwoods benefits everyone. There’s no need to keep listening to her nonsense!”Autumn took a deep breath, visibly holding herself together. She bent down and carefully picked up the journal, as if handling something fragile and precious. Gently brushing the dust from its cover, she cradled it close to her chest. Then, Autumn looked straight at Franklin, a mocking smile tugging at her lips. “What’s wrong, Franklin? You want me to stop reading because you know what’s on the next page, don’t you?”A flicker of realization crossed my mind. How did Autumn know what was written on the next page? Why was she doing this?I always thought… deep down, she hated me too.Franklin tried to interrupt again, but people in the crowd were already standing.“Let her read!” someone shout

Mom lowered her head at the question.I also wondered how come Mom never noticed.Someone from the Cordons couldn’t stand it anymore. He pointed at Autumn on stage and yelled, "Are you getting married or not? If not, we’re leaving!"Nevertheless, Autumn showed no fear. She simply chuckled. "You won’t even let me finish reading a simple wedding gift. If I marry into your family, what kind of life will that be?"Hearing this, Mom grew angry. "If the Cordons don’t want to have Autumn as their daughter-in-law, then we don’t want it either! Cancel the wedding—I’d like to see if the Cordons can still get that funding!"That one sentence shut the Cordons right up. That was Autumn for you—loved so dearly by her mother. Must be nice.Franklin started to panic. He stammered, "She’s the one who didn’t want to speak! That means she gave up!"Autumn let out a cold laugh and flipped to the next page. "Really? Then, let’s see. What exactly did she give up?"December 24, 2024.It’s Christmas

Autumn flipped to another page.October 15, 2024.Today, a friend called and said it’s been a while and that we should all get together. I lied and said I was really busy. But that wasn’t true. I just couldn't bring myself to go.I went to see the doctor today. My hair’s falling out even more. Looking in the mirror, I noticed my face looked a bit puffy too. Was it from being too thin? I didn’t want to dwell on it.I suddenly remembered Mom once telling me not to get too skinny, that it’d make her heart ache. But now, it feels like there’s no room for me in her heart at all.Thankfully, not everyone at home had stopped caring about me. Eloise, who’s looked after me for over twenty years, noticed something was off. She said, "You should tell Madam. She used to love you so much. She wouldn’t just ignore this."And I believed her. But when I went to see my parents, they were picking out a wedding dress for Autumn.Mom was beaming with a soft smile, pointing at a diamond-covered gow

Immediately after that, she flipped to the next page.May 20, 2024.Today is my birthday... and Autumn's too. But Mom and Dad seemed to have forgotten about me as they only bought her a cake.Still, I wasn't even mad. It’s just cake, and I don’t even like sweets anyway.Autumn seemed to notice me hiding in the corner. She brought me a slice and said, "Happy birthday, sis."I acted like I didn’t care, pushing the cake away. But inside, my heart was pounding like crazy. I wanted so badly to tell her happy birthday too.Even when I was cold, she just smiled and said it was okay. She really did seem like an angel. No wonder everyone loved her.Later that night, I saw Franklin put something into her drink. I didn’t have time to think. Just as Autumn was about to sip it, I lunged forward, grabbed the glass, and gulped it down myself. I barely had time to breathe when Mom came rushing over and slapped me across the face.I hit the ground hard, and all she cared about was checking if A
