Chapter 7

Author: Summer Sway
I saw Mr. and Mrs. Cordon slump into their chairs, their faces ashen with despair. My parents' expressions shifted. My mom suddenly shot to her feet and pointed at Franklin's nose, yelling, "What is the meaning of this? Is this how the Cordon family treats my daughter?!"

My dad was even more furious. Veins bulged on his forehead as he stormed up to Mr. Cordon, looking like he was about to punch him. "How dare you treat my daughter like that?!"

However, Autumn raised a hand to signal everyone to quiet down. She was determined to finish reading my diary.

He threatened me. I didn’t dare speak. Then, one of the men beside him looked me up and down with disgusting eyes and said he’d never tried a bald girl before.

That animal, Franklin, actually pulled out the video he had secretly taken that night and laughed as he said, "It felt great."

Hearing that, I froze. The memories of that night came rushing back, a dam bursting. I was on the verge of breaking down.

  • Fading Starlight   Chapter 8

Mom was crying, pointing at the Cordons with an accusatory finger and shouting, "If it hadn't been for you Cordons framing Gingy—lying, saying she tried to steal from Autumn—we never would've treated her that way!"We never would’ve driven her away… My Gingy… she must’ve been in so much pain…"A wave of understanding washed over me. Mom regretted it too.But I’m dead now. I can’t hug you anymore.Autumn stepped in front of Mom and said, "Mom, Gingy never tried to take anything from me. Because she was richer than me in every way!"As she spoke, she held out her hand, revealing the calluses on her palm. "Gingy was right. If she had ever touched my hand and felt these calluses, I would’ve been ashamed. She just didn’t know how to express herself. It wasn’t that she didn’t love.""So many nights, I lay awake, regretting that on her birthday, I didn’t say one word for her, not even a single sentence…""Autumn…" Mom, heartbroken, tried to reach for her hand, but Autumn pulled away.

  • Fading Starlight   Chapter 6

Franklin’s face went pale in an instant. He lunged forward, snatching the journal from Autumn’s hands and slamming it to the ground.“Enough!” he shouted. “Stop reading!”“A union between the Cordons and the Westwoods benefits everyone. There’s no need to keep listening to her nonsense!”Autumn took a deep breath, visibly holding herself together. She bent down and carefully picked up the journal, as if handling something fragile and precious. Gently brushing the dust from its cover, she cradled it close to her chest. Then, Autumn looked straight at Franklin, a mocking smile tugging at her lips. “What’s wrong, Franklin? You want me to stop reading because you know what’s on the next page, don’t you?”A flicker of realization crossed my mind. How did Autumn know what was written on the next page? Why was she doing this?I always thought… deep down, she hated me too.Franklin tried to interrupt again, but people in the crowd were already standing.“Let her read!” someone shout

  • Fading Starlight   Chapter 5

Mom lowered her head at the question.I also wondered how come Mom never noticed.Someone from the Cordons couldn’t stand it anymore. He pointed at Autumn on stage and yelled, "Are you getting married or not? If not, we’re leaving!"Nevertheless, Autumn showed no fear. She simply chuckled. "You won’t even let me finish reading a simple wedding gift. If I marry into your family, what kind of life will that be?"Hearing this, Mom grew angry. "If the Cordons don’t want to have Autumn as their daughter-in-law, then we don’t want it either! Cancel the wedding—I’d like to see if the Cordons can still get that funding!"That one sentence shut the Cordons right up. That was Autumn for you—loved so dearly by her mother. Must be nice.Franklin started to panic. He stammered, "She’s the one who didn’t want to speak! That means she gave up!"Autumn let out a cold laugh and flipped to the next page. "Really? Then, let’s see. What exactly did she give up?"December 24, 2024.It’s Christmas

  • Fading Starlight   Chapter 4

Autumn flipped to another page.October 15, 2024.Today, a friend called and said it’s been a while and that we should all get together. I lied and said I was really busy. But that wasn’t true. I just couldn't bring myself to go.I went to see the doctor today. My hair’s falling out even more. Looking in the mirror, I noticed my face looked a bit puffy too. Was it from being too thin? I didn’t want to dwell on it.I suddenly remembered Mom once telling me not to get too skinny, that it’d make her heart ache. But now, it feels like there’s no room for me in her heart at all.Thankfully, not everyone at home had stopped caring about me. Eloise, who’s looked after me for over twenty years, noticed something was off. She said, "You should tell Madam. She used to love you so much. She wouldn’t just ignore this."And I believed her. But when I went to see my parents, they were picking out a wedding dress for Autumn.Mom was beaming with a soft smile, pointing at a diamond-covered gow

  • Fading Starlight   Chapter 3

Immediately after that, she flipped to the next page.May 20, 2024.Today is my birthday... and Autumn's too. But Mom and Dad seemed to have forgotten about me as they only bought her a cake.Still, I wasn't even mad. It’s just cake, and I don’t even like sweets anyway.Autumn seemed to notice me hiding in the corner. She brought me a slice and said, "Happy birthday, sis."I acted like I didn’t care, pushing the cake away. But inside, my heart was pounding like crazy. I wanted so badly to tell her happy birthday too.Even when I was cold, she just smiled and said it was okay. She really did seem like an angel. No wonder everyone loved her.Later that night, I saw Franklin put something into her drink. I didn’t have time to think. Just as Autumn was about to sip it, I lunged forward, grabbed the glass, and gulped it down myself. I barely had time to breathe when Mom came rushing over and slapped me across the face.I hit the ground hard, and all she cared about was checking if A
