Chapter 6

Author: White Sand
Vanessa looked at Peter and exclaimed excitedly, "Your kid is a genius!"

Hearing that, I let out a sigh of relief. I put down my pencil, my palms slick with sweat.

Peter gave me a skeptical look. "He's a genius?"

"A true genius!" Vanessa picked up my test paper. "He could easily score at least 70 on this paper!"

And that was me holding back.

Vanessa was thrilled and declared she wanted to take me on as a student, but Peter suddenly wasn't having it. The wheels started turning in his head.

"You said my kid's a genius, and you wish to take him on as your student. Well, that's going to cost you. You should at least give me five pounds of eggs!"

Vanessa had expected something much more outrageous when he said that. When she realized he was only asking for five pounds of eggs, she immediately gave him 20 dollars and asked him to buy them at the market himself.

Even after taking the money, Peter didn't seem exactly happy. I couldn't help but think there was something off about the way he looked at me.

In the end, Peter still left.

Even though students from several nearby villages were attending this school, there weren't many of them overall. Each grade only had two classes—an advanced class and a regular class.

Of course, I went for the advanced class.

There were about 30 to 40 people in the class. Vanessa introduced me to everyone and said I was a genius.

The entire class instantly burst into laughter. A short, chubby young man with tanned skin stuck his chin up and said, "My mother said that scrawny runt's got a few tricks. How could he possibly be a genius?"

The others chimed in. "That's right."

"Even so, is he really as good as Xavier Carter?"

A short guy with glasses glanced at me and let out a disdainful snort.

Technically, I was already an adult and couldn't be bothered with this kind of childish behavior. I chose a random seat and settled down.

Still, I couldn't help but feel bothered. So what if I was scrawny? Why should anyone look down on me for that?

If they were students in my class, I would definitely have them stand at the back of the classroom as punishment.

Vanessa was not only the principal, but also one of the teachers. She walked to the front of the class and began her lesson. After listening for a while, I couldn't help shaking my head.

As a fellow teacher myself, I felt her teaching was awful.

Next to me was a thin young woman with tanned skin. Seeing my reaction, she thought I didn't understand the syllabus and quietly offered to teach me after class.

I recognized her. She was Betsy Bell, the young woman who won some eggs for her family a few days ago.

I thanked her and turned my attention back to the lesson.

Even though Vanessa's teaching was pretty bad, I could still sit through it.

Once I was in college, I was completely focused on my major, so I had forgotten the things I had learned in other subjects. I had to get my knowledge back up to speed.

I knew I could do it. Once I made it into college, I could go home.

  • Fail the Exam and Die   Chapter 17

Once I was back to being myself, everything that had happened felt like a dream. Whenever I thought about how ignorant I had been, I couldn't help but laugh at myself. Of course, many people could change their lives by working hard. But for others, they had no control over their own fate. How could they ever climb out of despair when no one was there to help them? With that, I finally made up my mind. Three days later, despite the principal's attempts to get me to stay, I submitted my resignation letter. As I boarded the train with my suitcase, I felt incredibly relieved. Vanessa was still sitting in the run-down office. There were streaks of gray hair in her low ponytail. The moment I knocked on the door, Vanessa looked up at me. I smiled. "Good day, ma'am. I'm Alex Towne, and I'm here as a volunteer teacher."

In the end, Betsy was rescued from the village too. After a thorough investigation, the police discovered that Daisy wasn't the only woman who had been abducted and brought to Moore Village. There were three in total. The plump man was the biggest human trafficker in the area. He had ruined the lives of many children. Given the severity of his crimes, he was sentenced to death. Even though Peter never managed to sell me, there was no question that he would be convicted of unlawful imprisonment and human trafficking. For those crimes, he was sentenced to five years in prison. Three days later, an elderly couple showed up at the police station. They held Daisy in their arms and wept. They were Daisy's parents. Even after all these years, they never gave up searching for her.Later, Daisy took Betsy and me to the city, where we would take our college entrance exam. I tutored Betsy relentlessly in the last few months before the exam. In the end, we were both admitted to the best

It turned out to be Vanessa. Her face was pressed against the cowshed window, and I saw several male teachers behind her. Vanessa whispered, "We're going to break the window and help you out of here."But the cowshed window had iron bars. I had no idea how long it would take to destroy them.I shook my head and began moving the bricks, one at a time. Finally, I squeezed through the tiny opening, with Daisy right behind me. There was no wall behind the cowshed. It was nothing but a dense, lush woodland in the mountains. All of us hurried into the woods and did not look back. By the time we got to the village entrance, everything was in chaos. Betsy stood in front of a group of police officers, arguing with the villagers. Many officers had arrived, and several police cars were there too. However, the villagers stood their ground, holding hoes and shovels. The officers couldn't do anything. Maurice kept trying to drag Betsy away. "You're so silly. Human trafficking? I've liv

Outside the window, Betsy was looking at me anxiously. She was part of my backup plan. The last time she came home to see her parents, I told her about my plan to escape. One day, while I was at school, Betsy rushed over from Moore Village and asked how she could be of help. I looked at her. "If I reach out to you at Vance Village in five days, you could help me escape. But if you don't hear from me in five days, come find me."Today happened to be the fifth day. Betsy stood by the window. She was so worried that she was about to cry. I was afraid she would be discovered if she stuck around for too long. All I said was, "Call the cops, and bring more people with you."With tears in her eyes, Betsy nodded and hurried off.Sure enough, not long after she left, Peter came into the yard to relieve himself. Daisy and I quickly pretended to be fast asleep. He came over to check on us. Since nothing seemed unusual, he walked away, humming to himself.I sneered. Peter could en

  • Fail the Exam and Die   Chapter 13

In the dead of the night, the drinking outside finally died down. Peter and the plump man's loud snores told me they were probably asleep.Daisy and I couldn't fall asleep. I wanted to ask her a few questions, but I was afraid someone might be eavesdropping. For a moment, I didn't know what to say. Then something occurred to me. I was a Jarlish teacher. I was certain no one in Moore village could understand Jarlish.I asked, "Can you speak Jarlish?"Daisy froze before nodding. So she really hadn't lost her mind. That night, we conversed in Jarlish about what was going on. Back then, Daisy was a college student who had been abducted and brought here. She tried to escape, but she was captured and brought back every time. Later, Daisy had Nathan. From that day on, she stopped resisting and pretended to cooperate with the family, earning their trust completely. When Nathan was five, Daisy tried to escape again. This time, she made it farther than she ever did before. In the

  • Fail the Exam and Die   Chapter 12

Peter raised his hand to slap me. He swung his huge palm toward my face, but it stopped short of hitting me.It was only because the plump man said, "Don't hit him too hard. He might not be able to work if you do…"What on earth were they up to?Peter went back to lock the gate. The plump man stayed where he was, scrutinizing me from head to toe, his eyes like those of a venomous snake. He looked at me as if I were nothing more than merchandise. Peter and the plump man shoved me ahead. No matter how hard I struggled, they still managed to get me into the cowshed. Daisy was still huddled in a corner, and the plump man seemed to recognize her. The plump man walked around Daisy twice before saying reproachfully, "She was clean and presentable when she came here. What did you do to her?"Peter raised an eyebrow. "You're the one to talk. She lost her mind after giving me a son, and she couldn't give me any more children. I spent 20,000 dollars for a crazy woman."The plump man lo
