Chapter 3

Author: Nameless
"I was just on the phone with Geoffrey a couple of minutes ago. He didn't mention feeling unwell," Gizanne said.

Tamara's face went white in an instant. Her lips trembled, but not a single word came out. That reaction alone said more than any explanation could.

Gizanne's heart sank. She realized something was wrong. Just as her patience was wearing thin, the lights in the banquet hall dimmed, and a spotlight hit the center of the stage.

The host announced with great enthusiasm that the welcome dinner for new hires had officially begun.

Then, Dorothy, who was dressed in a crisp new suit and beaming with confidence, stepped onto the stage. Basking in the attention from the audience, she cleared her throat and announced in a measured, theatrical tone, "Good evening, distinguished leaders and fellow colleagues!

"Today is a day worth celebrating, because our company has once again welcomed a fresh wave of talent. After three months of rigorous evaluation, a select group of outstanding interns has risen to the top. These interns are about to become official members of our company!"

Polite applause rose from the floor.

Gizanne sat in the VIP section at the corner, her fingers tightening ever so slightly around her wine glass. Her cold gaze was fixed on Dorothy.

Dorothy's voice suddenly rose. Her face could barely conceal her smugness. "Next, I will announce the names of those who have successfully converted to permanent positions!"

She picked up her cue card and began reading, "From the technical department, Elroy Patton and Michael Lennox. From the administrative department, Linabeth Smith…"

Each name was met with a small burst of cheers and applause.

Gizanne's expression, however, grew darker by the second. The air around her grew so heavy that the executives nearby who had been hoping to approach her with drinks thought better of it.

"And finally," Dorothy said, deliberately drawing out the words to build suspense. Her face broke into a fawning smile.

"I would like to give a special introduction to our marketing department's rising star. Not only did he contribute several outstanding creative ideas to the company during his internship, but his performance was also leagues ahead of everyone else.

"Let's give a round of applause to the future star of our company—Ethan Holte!"

The spotlight instantly swung onto Ethan, who was seated in the audience. Dressed in a designer suit, he rose elegantly and waved to his colleagues around him, wearing that restrained, proud smile of a winner.

The loudest applause of the evening filled the hall.

Dorothy continued her lengthy praise from the stage. "Mr. Holte's excellence speaks for itself. His addition will undoubtedly bring renewed energy to Miller Corporation! Let us once again applaud and officially welcome Ethan to our team!"

Thunderous applause followed.

Gizanne's gaze swept past Ethan without the slightest pause and landed back on Dorothy's face. She listened quietly until Dorothy folded her cue card and announced with a beaming smile, "That concludes the announcement."

Gizanne had not heard the name she most wanted to hear—Geoffrey Miller. Her younger brother Geoffrey's name was not on the list.

Amid the unending applause and congratulations, Gizanne rose to her feet. Her expression was ice-cold. She set her wine glass down on the table heavily. The dull thud was barely audible in the noise, but it was enough to make those nearby flinch.

She strode forward, ignoring every pair of eyes on her, and headed straight for the brightly lit stage.

The crowd parted before her, and the applause faded, replaced by silent astonishment as everyone watched their stern, unapproachable boss, wondering what she intended to do.

Dorothy, who was still basking in the glow of her flawless hosting, turned around only to find Gizanne's icy face inches from hers. The smile on Dorothy's face froze instantly. She stammered, "M-Ms. Miller, you…"

Gizanne paid her no attention. Reaching out, she took the microphone straight from Dorothy, who was startled. A sharp buzz of feedback echoed through the hall, and the room fell utterly silent.

Gizanne's freezing gaze swept over every bewildered face in the audience. Her voice, amplified by the microphone, rang clearly through the hall.

"What about my brother, Geoffrey?"

The announcement was concise and clear—a new department, independent from all existing business lines, was being established to take full responsibility for Miller Corporation's exploratory ventures into cutting-edge technology and emerging markets. The person in charge of this new department was me, an intern who, only three days earlier, had been fired for taking excessive leaves of absence. The company's internal anonymous forums and departmental chat groups exploded. Geoffrey, the intern who had been trampled underfoot by Ethan, ignored by Winston, and humiliated by Dorothy, had suddenly transformed into a department head on par with the directors of major business divisions, reporting directly to the CEO herself.Speculation ran wild. Talks about me being related to the CEO, carrying out undercover inspection, and playing the underdog spread to every corner of the company. The marketing department was especially shaken into silence. Winston in particular, I heard, had acci

"You're not a parasitic vine. You're a cactus—spines and all," Gizanne said, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling window with her back to me, looking out over the city's glittering skyline. "You're right. Parachuting you into the marketing department would taint everything you've worked for. That's not what I want to see, and it's certainly not what Grandma would have wanted either."She turned around. Her gaze was sharp as it settled on me. "So, I'm offering you a real opportunity—one that's 100 times harder than deputy director of marketing, and 100 times more aboveboard as well."I said nothing, waiting for her to continue."The company's board of directors recently passed a resolution to establish an entirely new independent department, temporarily called the Innovation Projects Department."Gizanne walked to her desk, pulled a thin folder marked "Highly Confidential" from a stack of documents, and handed it to me."The goal of this department is to tackle the most cutting-e

My eyes stung a little, but I didn't let the tears fall.I looked at Gizanne, then at all the varied faces in the audience below. I knew this absurd farce was finally over, and this storm had sounded the harshest possible warning for every opportunist out there. The door of the CEO's office closed behind me, shutting out all the whispered speculation and prying eyes. The world fell quiet once more. Gizanne handed me a glass of warm water. The frigid, distant air she carried around her finally softened somewhat in the space that held only the two of us."Geoff, I'm sorry. This is all my fault. I should have seen this coming." Gizanne spoke again, her voice carrying a weariness and self-reproach I rarely heard from her.I held the glass and shook my head. "Gigi, this isn't your fault. Miller Corporation is huge. You've got tens of thousands of employees. You can't possibly know every single intern.""But you're not just any intern." Her brow was furrowed, a clear indication that s

Dorothy broke down completely. She lunged wildly at me, trying to grab my phone, but the bodyguards behind Gizanne stopped her cold. The recording did not stop there either. It even captured Winston's voice as he reported to Dorothy how he had seamlessly credited the Starlight Project proposal—something I had stayed up three entire nights to complete—to Ethan's name. The truth, in its cruelest and most irrefutable form, was laid bare for all to see. Ethan's lies, Dorothy's bullying, Winston's cowardice, and the ugly faces of all those sycophants—every last bit of it was exposed in that moment.I saw Ethan, under the weight of countless scornful gazes, buckle at the knees and crumple to the floor in disgrace. The female colleagues who had once fawned over him now looked at him with nothing but revulsion. When the recording ended, a sharp burst of static crackled through the speakers, and the hall sank into a silence even more terrifying than before.I turned off my phone and slipp

Geoffrey's POVDorothy pretty much cried out the truth. "I thought that Mr. Holte was your fiance and our future boss! He said the company belonged to his family, and Mr. Fitzroy said the same! I was just... I was just trying to clear the path for our future boss in advance, which is why I got rid of that eyesore, Geoffrey! Ms. Miller, I did it all for you!"The confession hit the room like a thunderclap, stunning everyone senseless. Was Dorothy trying to anticipate Gizanne's every move? Trying to get into the boss' good books? Clearing the path for them? The entire hall fell into a deathly silence. Even the air itself seemed to have solidified. All eyes flicked between the frosty Gizanne on stage, the frantic Dorothy, and Ethan, who was on the verge of collapsing in the audience.A carefully prepared welcome dinner had, in the blink of an eye, turned into an absurd farce. At the center of all this stood an intern everyone had believed they could push around at will.Gizanne lis

The question landed like a blow, leaving everyone in the room stunned. The crowd that had been applauding so enthusiastically just moments before now seemed frozen mid-motion. Everyone's faces were etched with disbelief.Brother? Gizanne's brother? Which Geoffrey?Almost instantly, every gaze in the room swept like searchlights toward a certain corner of the room, searching for that usually plain figure they had all but forgotten. However, the corner was empty.Dorothy's face flushed, paled, and turned ashen within a single second. Her hands, still clutching the cue card, trembled like leaves in an autumn gale. She opened her mouth, but her throat felt like it was stuffed with cotton, and not a single syllable escaped her.How could Geoffrey be Gizanne's brother? That plain-dressed intern who never argued with anyone, who she'd pushed around so easily?Down in the audience, Ethan's smug smile had frozen solid. His designer suit seemed to lose its luster in an instant. He stood ro
