LOGIN“What's that supposed to mean?” Drew stood up, glaring at Ava.
Nathaniel walked out of the kitchen into the living room.
"Oh, the piece of shit boyfriend wants to play pretend,” Ava shuddered mockingly.
“Ava, let's talk outside.” Jamila shot a quick glance at Malakai, grabbing Ava's arm.
“I think I would like to hear what she has to say.” Malakai said calmly, lifting his weight from the chair.
"Well, your son is a liability. A big one! He's irresponsible and immature, always making shitty investments and squandering my friend's hard-earned money, making her life harder than it already is. He's the reason they were evicted from their apartment, so he had no other choice than to run to Daddy,” Ava mocked, and continued talking.
“He blew their entire rent money like it was nothing—the one that came solely from Jamila. He didn't contribute shit. I wouldn't be so shocked if he lied to her and gambled away the—”
"Avaaa,” Drew snarled, jaw clenched.
“If you dare say my name one more time, I swear I'd give you a dirty slap.” Ava declared fearlessly.
“Yeah, dude deserves to be slapped.” Danica agreed with crossed arms.
“All I know is that you don't deserve her. She's too good for you, and I hate that she doesn't see it.” Ava looked at Jamila, who had a resigned expression on her face.
Jamila knew her friends; they wouldn't let this one slide, especially Ava.
“Andrew? Let's talk outside, by the pool.” Malakai said and walked out, with Drew following behind him.
“We came to study with you.” Danica announced as soon as they left.
“Oh, you did?” Jamila scoffed.
“Can I get you girls anything?” Nathaniel voiced out, and the girls turned to him.
“And who are you?” Ava scrutinized.
“The chef.” Nathaniel shook his head, clearly entertained, his gaze focused solely on Ava.
“Thank you, Nathan. But they won't be getting anything after the scene they just created.” Jamila spoke.
“Water would do. Thanks, chef.” Danica winked.

“Where did I go wrong, Andrew?” Malakai started.
“You went off the rails. I wanted to help you, but you refused. Can't you see you're ruining your life? Dropping out of school? No job? Nothing?”
“Oh, so you're saying I'm nothing?” Drew chuckled humorlessly.
“You're missing the point. And what is this I hear about you squandering the rent money? Making bad investments all the time? What investments, Andrew?” Malakai's jaw ticked.
“Just drop it, okay? I came here because we needed help, so if you really don't want to help us, just say so!”
“Of course I want to help you. You're my son.”
“Thank you.”
“Go back to college, Andrew,” Malakai insisted.
“There you go trying to control my life again. School is not for me. You and I both know that I hardly got through high school.”
“So what do you want to do with your life then?”
“I'm still thinking about it.” Drew mumbled.
“You really need to step up, son. No girl wants a guy that's not able to provide—”
“And I heard you. The fuck?” Drew hissed.
Malakia remained quiet, staring at him.
“I'm going out with friends. I’ll be back in the morning.” Drew said simply and walked out.

[MALAKAI'S LIBRARY]
“I don't want to talk about it.” Jamila declared as she entered the library with the girls.
“You know we're going to talk about it, Jams! And are you sure we're allowed in here?” Danica inquired, admiring the floor-to-ceiling shelves stacked with books.
“Malakai doesn't mind.” Jamila perched down in front of her laptop and books on the round table.
“You could have called us to help you. We always tell you to come live with either of us, but you always decline. What do you even see in him?” Ava complained, taking her seat opposite Jamila.
“What you guys don't.”
“Obviously.” Danica snickered, her fingertips skimming down the rows of books.
“His dad is this fucking rich, and Drew has been out there living like he has no one?” Ava shook her head, squinting at her surroundings.
"Look, guys, do you want to study or not?” Jamila raised her brows.
“Ugh, fine!” Ava groaned. “I fucking hate Prof Lahey’s gut. He's the biggest piece of shit to ever walk this earth.”
“Tell me about it.” Danica mumbled, dropping her bag beside the table.
“We literally just got the message about his test this morning, like what the fuck?” Jamila exclaimed.
“God, I love when we rant and insult him together.” Ava replied, and the girls laughed.
“Okay, so back to business. Literally.” Jamila sighed, flipping through her textbook.
Ava and Danica opened their laptops.
“Jams, you have to teach us financial ratios. I can't seem to grasp them.” Ava shook her head, pulling up her notes app.
“Especially the difference between current ratio and quick ratio.” Danica added.
“Girls, w
hat's so hard about it?” Jamila glanced up from her book.
“Literally only you would say that.” Ava scoffed
[RESTAURANT]“Oh my goodness!” Maria exclaimed. “This is so good. Jamila, you should have a taste.”“I'm allergic to shrimp, Mum.”“Oh, you are?” Maria frowned.Jamila nodded, looking away.“Well, too bad.”“Um… where have you been, Mum?” “Just here and there, you know…” Maria waved her hands vaguely.“Is that an engagement ring?” Jamila sucked in a breath, gaping at her mother's hand, a million different emotions running through her veins.“Oh, yes. I'm engaged.”“That's… nice. Who is he? Can I meet him?”“Okay.” Maria responded plainly, twirling the pasta around her fork.“You don't want me to meet him?” “You're still in school, right?” Maria asked, obviously diverting.“Yes, Mum.” Jamila sighed, eyes lowering to the glass of water in front of her. That was the only thing she ordered. “I missed you, Mum." Jamila lifted her gaze to the woman in front of her, fiddling with her hands under the table.“Oh, Jamila.” Maria laughed like Jamila had just made a joke, “Don't be silly. You
“What the fuck, man?!” Drew bellowed, holding his jaw.The girl beside Drew finally woke up, rubbing at her eyes.“You!” Nathaniel pointed at the girl. "Get out now.” She glanced at Drew, but he didn't acknowledge her.She quickly grabbed the blanket, covering herself with it, and then grabbed her dress and heels, scurrying out of the room.“You're really a piece of shit.” Nathaniel spat at Drew.“I should go.” Jamila finally spoke, taking a step back.“What? Where?” Nathaniel faced her, his expression softening. Her right hand was already trembling, and she used her left hand to cover it, holding it still.“I just… it's fine, I'm fine.” She smiled, but it didn't reach her eyes. Her right hand was already shaking, and she used her left hand to cover it, holding it still.“Jamila, we should talk,” Drew said.“Do you want to talk to him?” Nathaniel asked Jamila, and she nodded.“Are you sure?” Nathaniel probed further.“Yes. I'm sure you should really get the fuck out of here!” Drew in
Jamila pushed through the glass doors, closing them behind her, shutting out the blaring music. She let out a breath of relief, grateful to be away from all the prying eyes of Drew's friends. And most importantly, Drew. This wasn't the first time he tried making out with her in front of his friends. She just wasn't comfortable in their presence. She didn't like them. Simple. As she made her way up the stairs to the quiet hallways, her phone began buzzing in her hand. She looked down at the caller ID. An unknown number. Her spine instantly turned rigid against her will, her palm tightening around her phone. Her head was still down when she bumped into something solid.“Careful!” Large hands immediately caught hold of her.She lifted her gaze to see Malakai. He wore a dark, baggy hoodie and sweatpants, making him look different and younger. This was her first time seeing him in something so casual. And he looked really… nice.“Are you okay?” Malakai's brows knit together as his eyes s
[A WEEK LATER]“Mummy, please don't leave me again. I'm all alone.”“Mummy, please. Take me with you.”“Mummy! Mummy!!”“Please!” Jamila jerked awake from her sleep, her chest heaving with uneven breaths. She glanced at the other side of the bed to find it empty. It was currently 2am, and Drew still hadn't come home. She immediately dashed out of the room, padding down the stairs and into the library.“Jamila?” Malakai's voice came from across the room, making her flinch.Even though this was his house, she still wasn't expecting to see him here.“Uh, are you okay?” His brows furrowed with concern.“Yes—yes, I… um.” She swallowed, hiding her trembling hands behind her.“Sorry, I should go.” She quickly turned away.“No, you can stay,” Malakai spoke, and she halted.“If you want.” He added, and she secretly rolled her eyes before turning around to face him.“Victoria, let's pick up from where we stopped at the office. Goodnight.” Malakai ended the FaceTime and glanced up at Jamila.“Yo

“We should go.” Drew grabbed the takeout from Jamila, leading her into the cab.“Are you serious? He—”“I’ll explain in the cab.” “You better.” Jamila scoffed. She took a quick glance at Malakai before entering the cab with Drew.“Well…” She pressed as the cab zoomed off.“He's my dad.” Drew rolled his eyes.“I know that now. When I asked about him, you brushed me off.”“We're not on good terms.”“Obviously.” She snickered.“Don't push it, J.”Jamila remained quiet, staring out through the window as she tried to wrap her head around tonight's turn of events.Drew hardly talked about his father; she knew his mom had died a few years back. But since he obviously didn't want to talk about it, then she'll leave him be. Because then he'll bring up her family, and she sure as hell didn't want to go down that road.As they both came down from the cab, she went through her lecture updates while waiting for Drew to pay for the ride.“Boy! Aren't you going to pay up!” The cab man growled imp
