I lay awake long after Asher was asleep.

The house gave off a few small noises, ones you only hear when all is silent. Pipes settling. The soft tick of the clock in the hall. His breath was slow and even, solid and steady at my side.

I lay on my back and watched the ceiling while rolling the beams of light outside the house from car headlights. How they held on. The way my skin was crawling hours later.

Watching. Waiting.
