Zane's POV

I find Kaidora in the hallway outside the elder council's chamber, her back pressed against the wall like she needs it to stay upright. Her face is pale, eyes unfocused and staring at nothing.

“Kaidora?” I reach for her, concern spiking when she doesn't immediately respond. “What happened? What did they say?”

She blinks, her gaze finally focusing on me. “Nothing. They just... asked questions. About being Luna.”

But her voice is hollow and distant, like she's speaking from somewhere f

Kaidora's POVThe pack house is chaos in the wake of Alpha Rowan's death.Wolves gathering in hushed clusters. Elders convening emergency meetings. Pack members demanding answers about succession, about leadership, about what happens next. And in the middle of it all— Warren, suddenly thrust into the Alpha position he always wanted but never like this."I need to stay." He says, finding Zane and me in a quiet corridor. "The pack needs stability. Needs someone to take control before things spiral.""I know." Zane nods. "Do what you need to do.""And you?" Warren looks between us. "What are your plans?""We're leaving." I say before Zane can answer. "Going back to the safe house for now. Then… I don't know. Somewhere away from all of this.""You're not staying for the funeral?" Warren's voice is carefully neutral."No." The answer is immediate. "I can't pretend to mourn him. Can't stand there while the pack celebrates his life and legacy. Not after everything.""I understand." Warren's

Kaidora's POVThree days. That's how long I take to make my decision. Three days of thinking, crying, wrestling with impossible choices while everyone around me tries to give me space but can't quite hide their hope.Hope that I'll save them. Hope that I'll be the hero. Hope that I'll sacrifice myself because it's the right thing to do.But on the morning of the fourth day, I wake up knowing what I'm going to do.And it's not what anyone expects.Zane is still asleep beside me, his arm draped protectively over my waist. Through the bond, I feel his wolf, Darko, weak and fading. Getting worse each day that passes. But also— something else. Something I've been noticing over the past few days but haven't mentioned to anyone. The connection between Darko's curse and Alpha Rowan's curse. They're linked. Tied together like two ends of the same rope.Which means when one ends, the other might too.I slip out of bed carefully, not wanting to wake Zane yet. This conversation needs to happen wi

Zane's POVThe drive back to the safe house is silent.Kaidora stares out the window, her expression unreadable. Through the bond, I feel her emotions churning— grief, anger, confusion, exhaustion all mixed together into something overwhelming.Amber drives carefully, giving us space. Not trying to force conversation or apologies. When we arrive, the others are waiting. Warren, Marcus, Connor— all looking at us with questions they're too afraid to ask.“How did it go?” Warren finally breaks the silence.“He told us everything.” I help Kaidora out of the car. “About Aria. About my father. About why he killed them both.”“And?” Marcus prompts.“And he's given up.” Kaidora's voice is hollow. “He's accepted that he's dying. Left instructions for after he's gone. Basically surrendered.”“That's… unexpected.” Warren's brow furrows. "Father doesn't give up. Ever."“Maybe he's finally realized he should.” I guide Kaidora toward the cabin. “Maybe ten years of running from consequences finally

Kaidora's POVThe study is exactly what I expected— expensive furniture, shelves lined with pack history books, the scent of old leather and power. Everything designed to remind visitors who hold authority here. But the man sitting behind the desk doesn't look powerful. He looks tired. Broken. Like the weight of ten years has finally caught up to him.“You want the whole truth.” Alpha Rowan says, not a question. “About your mother. About what really happened.”“Yes.” I force myself to meet his eyes. “No lies. No justifications. Just the truth.”He's quiet for a moment, then stands and moves to a cabinet along the wall. He pulls out a bottle of whiskey and two glasses, pouring himself a drink. He offers me one, and I shake my head.“Suit yourself.” He takes a long swallow, then returns to his desk. “The truth. Where do I even start?”“Start with my mother.” My voice is steady despite my racing heart. “Start with Aria.”“Aria.” He says her name like it hurts. “She was my first mate. My

Kaidora's POVI must have fallen asleep because I wake to darkness outside the window and Zane sitting in a chair beside the bed, watching over me.“How long was I out?” My voice is rough.“About six hours.” He moves to sit on the edge of the bed. “The others went to get supplies. It's just us here right now.”“Good.” I sit up slowly, my body still adjusting to having a wolf inside me. Everything feels different. Sharper. More intense. “I don't think I can face everyone's expectations right now.”“You don't have to.” His hand finds mine. “There's no timeline on this decision, Kai. Despite what Warren said about running out of time.”“But we are running out of time.” I meet his eyes. “Your father is dying. Your wolf is dying. Every day I wait is another day closer to—”“To consequences I'm willing to face.” He interrupts gently. “I meant what I said. I'd rather lose Darko than force you into anything.”“But what kind of life is that for you?” Frustration bleeds into my voice. “No wolf
