Cassie’s POV

Alison pushed the meeting to early the next morning. Way too early.

She said it was better that way… less traffic, less heat, more time to actually spend at the orphanage homes. Still, she made sure we were prepped the night before. She sat us down in the den and walked us through the three homes we’d be visiting. One was just on the outskirts of town. The other two were closer to campus, smaller, but still crowded with kids who didn’t have nearly enough resources.

She said this wasn’t a photo op. It wasn’t for the press. Golden Hearts had been running quiet outreach programs like this for years, especially under their mom’s direction. This one just happened to line up with a few open days on her calendar, and now that Ledger was suspended, she figured it was the perfect time for him to tag along again.

I thought it’d be a quick thing. Some check-ins, a few donations, hand over food and gifts, pose for one or two group photos, then go.

But Alison had other plans.

She had

Cassie's POV “Well, nice to meet you, man…” Dave cleared his throat. “Right. I’ll, uh… see you later, Cassie.” He backed off, almost tripping over Veronica’s chair as he moved to stand beside her seat. She gave him an unimpressed look.Ledger didn’t respond. He just gave Dave one last look, then turned to me. “You ready?”I rolled my eyes, but I couldn’t exactly ignore the way my pulse jumped. “Sure. I’ll grab lunch with my man here,” I told them.Ledger’s lips curved faintly as he guided me out of the office, his hand never leaving my back.Once we were outside, I shook my head. “You didn’t even say hi.”“Didn’t need to,” he said flatly.I sighed, glancing up at the man currently playing human barricade. “Really?”He finally looked down at me. “What?”“You just caveman’d the poor guy.” I queried as we walked down the stairs.“He was flirting with you.”“He flirts with everyone.”“He flirts with you,” Ledger said, deadpan. “Not everyone.”I bit back a smile. “You’re jealous.”“Of cou

Cassie's POV For the first time since I'd become an intern for Arena Report, I was visiting the headquarters. Or maybe, home office was a better term.My supervisor, Nolan Andrews’ office was on the second floor so I had to take the elevator. My curious, journalism instincts told me to explore the building. It looked like a place that lived and breathed sports. But once again, I had to hold back. Nolan was waiting.I knocked once I arrived at a door labelled Nolan Andrews.“Come in.” He said from behind the door.I entered without hesitation. “Monroe,” he greeted, voice clipped but not unkind. “Good timing. We’ve got a lot to cover.” His face was still buried into the laptop he was using, tapping away.“Take a seat.” He instructed. I grabbed the seat across from him and sat, crossing my legs. Then I waited patiently for him to conclude whatever he was doing.Once he was done, he finally looked up at me, closing the laptop. “Sorry about that. As I said, I have something for you.” “Ho

Ledger's POV In the midst of the celebrations, I snuck out of the rink, into the locker room and quickly changed into casual clothes. I made sure to hide my face under a hoodie before tucking my hands into my pockets and walking out.I had only made it a few steps outside the ice house when someone tugged at my hoodie.“The star of the show walking out of his own show.” Cassie’s voice had that teasing lilt. “You were just gonna leave without saying anything to me?”I looked at her. “I knew you’d come.”Her smile faltered. “Okay… what’s with the tragic hero vibe? What’s wrong?”I exhaled slowly. “The hard part starts now. People will say it’s a fluke. That it only happened because no one’s used to the way we play. Next time, they’ll be ready.”She stepped closer, eyes steady on mine. “Ledger… your best games have always been the ones where it’s hardest.”That got me. I looked at her for a second, my chest tightening in a way that had nothing to do with the game. “What would I do witho

Author’s POV“Leon snatches it clean, again,” Cassie’s voice rang out with calm clarity through the broadcast mic. “That’s every faceoff he’s won so far.”“He’s on fire,” Rory added. “Quick pass to Peter now… right side. First time starting and already moving with confidence.”Peter hesitated a split second, he was under intense pressure, but he found his footing quickly and redirected the puck along the boards. The Frosthounds were already moving. They didn’t look like the underdogs today. They moved with coordination that left the Bolton Wanderers scrambling to respond. Every pass and play was one step ahead.“Look at that transition,” Rory said. “Peter to Calvin, Calvin resets it to Mason… back to Leon. They’re not even letting Bolton breathe.” Each play built on the last, as if they already knew how Bolton would respond.By the time the puck ricocheted to Calvin at the right, he didn’t hesitate. He cut in hard, faked left, and passed to Mason who barely had to move before slapping

Cassie's POVIt was finally game time. The past week had been packed with drills, play rehearsals, video reviews, and off-ice bonding. But the past twenty-four hours had been quieter, the team sticking to light stretches and plenty of rest, per Damian's orders. Now, the Icehouse felt different. The stands were packed with people from all over the country. People who loved to watch College hockey had shown up, curious about Ledger's new team.“I don't think I've seen so many people show up at our games before.” Someone muttered. The Frosthounds were in the locker room, getting ready for the game. Ryan bounced his knee restlessly. Jakub kept retying and untying his pads, mumbling to himself in Czech. Leon sat still, helmet on, staring at nothing. The door opened to reveal Ledger. He took one look at everyone's faces and sighed, dumping a duffel bag on the bench. The silence said everything. He clapped his hands once. “Alright. Enough of that.”A few heads lifted. Mason looked over from

Cassie's POV Dorothy rubbed her face once, her mask slipping for a moment. It was rare to see. “Thank you, Cassie. I'll take over from here.” Dorothy said. She wasn't dismissing me, it was just her way of telling me to focus on my education while she did the heavy lifting. It made me feel… odd. Was this what having an older sister felt like? “There's something else.”Dorothy nodded. “You did mention something about Otto.”“Yes.” I replied. “He knew Freddie leaked the video. The problem is Ledger told no one about Freddie's blackmail.”Dorothy bobbed her head once, putting the pieces together. “Who's Otto again?”I snorted. “My ex.”Dorothy tilted her head to the side. “The cheat?”I grinned. “Yup.”“Hm.” Was the only reaction she gave. “Have you spoken to this… Freddie?”I shook my head. “Not yet. I probably should. I’ll…”My phone buzzed, cutting me off. “One sec.” I said, taking it out and glancing down at it. “Perfect timing.” I raised my phone, showing her the text from Fredd
