Julia’s First-Person POV

The terrace felt too small for all the tension trapped inside it.

The wind tangled through my hair, cold against my burning skin, but neither Alan nor Kai seemed to notice. Their attention stayed locked on each other like predators waiting for the first mistake.

And somehow…

I was standing in the center of it all.

Kai leaned against the railing, dark eyes fixed on me with an intensity that made my pulse stumble. Alan stood at my side, close enough that the heat from his body wrapped around me like a shield.

Or maybe a cage.

Neither man moved.

Neither looked away.

The silence became unbearable.

“I’m not something you can fight over,” I whispered finally.

Alan’s jaw tightened instantly.

Kai’s expression darkened.

“That’s not what this is,” Alan said.

“Then what is it?” I asked, my voice shaking. “Because every time I walk into a room lately, it feels like I’m standing in the middle of a war no one will explain to me.”

Kai laughed softly.

A dangerous sound.

“Now you’re starting to understand.”

Alan stepped forward immediately. “Don’t.”

Kai ignored him completely.

His eyes stayed on me.

“You think this started recently?” he asked quietly. “You think this is about jealousy? About attraction?” His mouth curved bitterly. “Julia… this began years ago.”

A chill slid down my spine.

“Kai—”

“You were never supposed to come back to the Bennett estate,” he continued. “The moment you returned, everything buried started clawing its way to the surface.”

Alan’s hand brushed my arm gently.

“Don’t listen to him.”

But I could feel it.

The truth hidden underneath Kai’s words.

The fear underneath Alan’s silence.

And suddenly, I was tired of all of it.

“No,” I said sharply. “No more secrets.”

Both of them froze.

I took a shaky breath.

“I want the truth. All of it. Tonight.”

Kai’s eyes flickered.

Alan looked away first.

That terrified me more than anything.

“What?” I whispered. “What aren’t you telling me?”

Alan inhaled slowly, like the answer physically hurt.

Before he could speak, Kai straightened from the railing.

“She deserves to know,” he said coldly.

Alan’s voice turned lethal. “You don’t get to decide that.”

“And you do?” Kai snapped. “You think keeping her ignorant is protecting her?”

My heartbeat thundered painfully.

Protecting me from what?

Kai stepped closer.

“The threats against Julia never stopped,” he said quietly.

My blood turned to ice.

Alan cursed under his breath.

“What?” I whispered.

Kai’s gaze locked onto mine.

“The notes. The surveillance tampering. The archive break-in.” His expression hardened. “That wasn’t the end of it.”

I stared at him.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because panic gets people killed.”

Alan moved instantly, grabbing Kai by the collar.

“You don’t get to stand here pretending you care after everything you’ve done.”

Kai didn’t fight him.

Didn’t even blink.

“Hit me if you want,” he said flatly. “It won’t change what’s coming.”

Something in his voice made my stomach twist.

Not manipulation.

Not obsession.

Fear.

Real fear.

Alan slowly released him, though every muscle in his body remained tense.

The wind howled across the terrace.

Then—

A sharp sound sliced through the night.

Click.

All three of us froze.

My breath caught.

Kai’s expression changed instantly.

Alan moved in front of me without hesitation.

“What was that?” I whispered.

Neither answered.

Another sound.

Metal against stone.

Close.

Too close.

Kai’s eyes scanned the shadows beyond the terrace doors.

Then his voice dropped into something deadly serious.

“We’re not alone.”

A cold wave of terror swept through me.

Alan grabbed my wrist firmly. “Inside. Now.”

But before we could move—

A voice echoed from the darkness.

Soft.

Female.

Familiar.

“You really should’ve stayed hidden, Julia.”

My entire body went numb.

Because I recognized that voice.

Ava.
