The word echoed through my head long after Kai said it.
Ava’s gone.
Not transferred.
Not missing paperwork.
Gone.
I sat frozen on the edge of the bed, clutching my son against my chest while fear spread slowly through my body like poison.
“How?” Alan’s voice was dangerously calm.
Kai ran a hand through his hair. “Transport accident. At least that’s the official report.”
Alan’s expression turned cold instantly. “And the unofficial one?”
Kai hesitated.
“She disappeared before the transport even reached the highway.”
Silence swallowed the room.
My heartbeat thundered loudly in my ears.
“No,” I whispered. “No, that’s impossible.”
But even as I said it, I knew Ava had never been normal. Never predictable. She was patient. Obsessive. Smart enough to manipulate people into underestimating her.
Alan was already moving.
Pulling on a shirt. Reaching for his phone. Slipping instantly into the terrifyingly controlled version of himself that emerged whenever danger touched me.
“Double security,” he ordered sharply into the phone. “Nobody enters this property without my authorization.”
He ended the call before waiting for a response.
“Alan…” My voice shook. “She knows where we live.”
His eyes found mine immediately.
“She won’t get near you.”
The promise sounded absolute.
But promises had limits.
And Ava had already shattered too many boundaries.
Kai stepped closer. “I’ll stay here tonight.”
Alan didn’t argue.
That alone frightened me.
Because the two of them only stopped fighting when the threat became serious enough to matter more than their rivalry.
And Ava always mattered.
Hours passed without sleep.
By dawn, the entire estate had transformed.
Security guards moved across the property. Gates remained locked. Cameras flickered constantly across hallway monitors downstairs.
It felt less like a home now.
And more like a fortress.
I stood near the nursery window holding my son carefully while pale morning light stretched across the gardens outside.
That’s when I saw her.
A woman standing beyond the front gate.
Still.
Watching.
My breath caught instantly.
She wore dark clothing and sunglasses despite the cloudy morning. One hand rested against the iron gate casually, almost familiarly.
Like she belonged there.
Fear slammed into me so hard I nearly dropped the bottle in my hand.
“Alan,” I whispered.
He looked up immediately from the couch across the nursery.
The second he followed my gaze toward the gate, his entire body went rigid.
Not fear.
Recognition.
And somehow that terrified me more.
Slowly, Alan stood.
“What is it?” I asked shakily.
He didn’t answer right away.
Kai appeared behind him seconds later, noticing the tension instantly.
“What happened?”
Alan’s jaw tightened hard.
Then quietly—
“That’s impossible.”
Cold spread through my chest.
“What’s impossible?” I demanded.
The woman outside slowly removed her sunglasses.
And smiled directly at the house.
At me.
My blood turned to ice.
Because I knew that smile.
Ava.
“No…” I breathed.
But something felt wrong.
Different.
Subtle, but enough to unsettle every instinct I had.
Alan suddenly stepped in front of me protectively, blocking my view.
“Stay here.”
His voice left no room for argument.
He was already moving toward the door when I grabbed his arm.
“Alan, wait—”
“She shouldn’t be here.”
“She escaped prison!”
“I know.”
His eyes met mine then.
Dark.
Sharp.
Hiding something.
And before I could stop him, he was gone.
Kai cursed softly before following after him.
I hurried to the window again, heart pounding violently.
Outside, the woman remained perfectly calm while security approached cautiously around the gate.
Then Alan appeared.
Even from this distance, I could see the dangerous tension in his posture.
The woman smiled faintly at him.
And then she said something that made Alan stop completely.
Not freeze.
Stop.
Like the world itself had shifted beneath his feet.
Kai moved beside him immediately.
Alan turned sharply toward Kai.
And for the first time since I’d met him…
I saw genuine shock on Alan’s face.
Downstairs, the front doors suddenly slammed open.
