Chapter 1

Before I could make sense of all the information in the comments, the host at the front of the auditorium announced, "Next, please welcome student council president Simon Luther to give a speech to our new students."

Applause filled the auditorium.

I was sitting in the exact center of the front row, but Simon didn't look at me.

Instead, he stood onstage and looked toward the right side of the auditorium.

A girl was sitting there in an old, faded uniform.

She had very fair skin and her hair was simply tied back. She nervously pinched the hem of her skirt between her fingers.

When she noticed Simon looking at her, she raised her head and glanced at him. Then she quickly lowered her eyes again.

[Oh, President Luther's gaze is so gentle!]

[Jessica must be shy.]

[Natalie is about to lose her mind with jealousy and storm over to embarrass Jessica!]

I followed their gaze.

Sitting beside the girl were Steven Kennedy and Quentin Smith.

Steven was the captain of the basketball team. He was usually full of energy, but right now, he was quietly holding her backpack for her.

Quentin was flipping through a competition study guide.

There was also a cup of warm water sitting at the corner of his desk. The temperature was probably just right to drink.

I had a sensitive stomach and couldn't drink water that was too cold, so Quentin used to make sure my water was always warm enough.

Now he still remembered, but he was doing it for someone else.

I looked away.

I hadn't seen the three of them in a year. Apparently, they had learned how to take care of people.

Simon finished his speech soon after.

As soon as he stepped off the stage, he walked straight over to the girl. "Jessica, is your uniform too small?"

Jessica Harper shook her head. "No. It's just old because I've worn it so much."

"Then I'll have someone get you a new one."

She quickly shook her head. "It's okay. I can earn the money and buy one myself."

Steven frowned. "It's just an uniform. You don't have to be so polite with us."

Quentin looked up and said, "You can apply for the school's financial aid program."

Jessica's eyes turned slightly red. "Thank you, but I don't want special treatment just because people feel sorry for me."

Simon immediately frowned.

Then he turned to look at me.

But there was no trace of the familiarity he once had in his eyes, only suspicion. "Natalie."

I looked up. "Yes?"

"Jessica just transferred here, so she doesn't know the school very well yet. Don't cause trouble for her because of some stupid rumors."

I glanced at Jessica behind him.

She looked up at me too. There was a hint of fear in her eyes.

Then she quietly stepped behind Simon. "Natalie is back. Do you think she won't like me?"

Simon immediately frowned even harder. "Natalie, Jessica is shy. Don't bully her. She's been helping the student council during the year you were away. She's not someone you can just push around."

Steven let out a cold laugh beside him. "Natalie, drop the princess act. This is school. Nobody's gonna cater to you."

Quentin stood nearby. He pushed his glasses up but didn't say anything. Still, his eyes remained fixed on Jessica.

More comments flooded before my eyes.

[She's definitely furious right now. She used to be the center of everyone's attention.]

[She always treated those three guys like they belonged to her. Now that they're protecting someone else, she must be losing her mind.]

[I can't wait to watch her go crazy with jealousy and get publicly humiliated by them!]

[She deserves it. Someone like her needs to learn what it feels like to lose everything.]

I quietly looked at the three people standing in front of me.

At first, I had been confused by the comments. But after seeing their guarded looks and hearing their warnings, I finally knew the comments were telling the truth.

During the year I had taken a leave of absence to go overseas for medical treatment, they had found a new source of entertainment.

A poor, stubborn girl who looked a little like me, but knew how to act vulnerable better than I ever did.

I didn't get angry or demand to know why they had changed their minds about me, like the comments expected.

I just felt bored.

Simon frowned as he stared at me. He seemed to be bracing himself for whatever outburst I was about to have.

But I simply walked past him and headed straight for the stage.

The principal was onstage preparing to give his speech.

When he saw me walk up, he froze. "Natalie, what are you..."

I simply took the microphone from his hand. "Sorry, but I need to take up one minute of everyone's time."

The noisy auditorium instantly fell silent. Everyone turned to look at me.

Steven and Simon pushed past the security guards outside and stormed into the lounge with bloodshot eyes.Quentin immediately stepped in front of me and glared at them coldly."Move!" Steven shouted at Quentin like a madman. Then he turned his furious gaze toward me.Suddenly, he started crying. The boy who never shed a tear, even when he was bleeding on the basketball court, was now crying like his heart had been shattered. "Natalie, why did you choose him instead of me?"Steven's voice was hoarse. It was filled with hurt and despair. "You know we've grown up together. I could accept you cutting my team's funding. I could even accept being humiliated in front of everyone. But why did you choose to keep him by your side?"I stood behind Quentin and looked at Steven coldly. "Steven, do you really think you're in a position to ask me that?"Steven's entire body trembled.Simon pushed past him and walked toward me.His right hand was still bleeding from the broken glass. For the first tim

I simply looked at her in silence. She took a step closer and began showing off. "Lately, I've heard people say I look like you. That I'm your replacement. But Simon, Steven, and Quentin have given me the best of everything. This dress, these diamonds, and even everyone's attention tonight. Natalie, I guess you really mean nothing to them after all."She sighed and put on a pitying expression. "They've all been so good to me. I'm sorry things turned out this way for you."I looked at her smug face and finally felt bored. "Jessica."She froze.I slowly swirled the champagne in my glass and glanced at her designer gown. "The dress is half an inch too big for you. The waist was altered at the last minute. Simon must have used my measurements when he borrowed the dress."Jessica went completely stiff.I didn't care about her embarrassment. Instead, I continued, "Go ahead and enjoy this short-lived happiness while you can. Midnight is almost here."With that, I walked downstairs. The annive

The butler froze for a moment. But when he saw the cold look on my face, he respectfully nodded. "Yes, Ms. Easton."Half an hour later, my phone, which was sitting on the desk, vibrated. It was a message from Simon. "Natalie, stop this. Why did you send the watch back?""I know you're jealous because of Jessica. But you're an Easton, while she's just an ordinary girl. Why are you even bothering with her?""If you apologize and admit you were wrong, I'll treat you the same way I always have. But don't use our engagement as a joke."I read the pointless messages and blocked his number. After that, I opened my chat with Quentin. He had sent me an encrypted file.It contained estimates of the bottom-line bids from the last two companies competing for the Southport project.I opened the file. The data was detailed, and every number was backed by solid reasoning.I replied. "Good job."Quentin answered within seconds. "I'm glad you're satisfied."Half a month passed quickly.I put all my ene

I took one step forward and stared Steven down.He instinctively took half a step back.I raised my chin slightly and looked down at Jessica, who was hiding behind him. "I chose not to argue with you because I was being gracious. But you can't keep accusing me just because I chose to stay quiet."Then I looked at Steven with a mocking smile. "Steven, you screamed at me in front of everyone because of a lie. Do you really think being loud enough can hide how guilty and stupid you are?"Steven froze.A flash of panic crossed his eyes. It was as if he had suddenly realized that he had just destroyed the last bit of affection left between us.The comments went strangely quiet.[Um... I think Natalie actually has a point.][Jessica really did fall and kneel down by herself. Natalie didn't even do anything.][But Jessica is so pitiful. Couldn't Natalie have been a little nicer?]I looked at the comments that were still desperately defending Jessica. Then I turned away with a dismissive smile

I looked at him but didn't pull my hand away. Instead, I asked coldly, "Quentin, what exactly are you trying to do?"He leaned against my shoulder and let out a quiet breath, like an abandoned puppy. "You pulled your funding. You quit the student council. You even chose to back down. You never used to back down. Before you went overseas, you told us that this marriage was nothing more than a business arrangement. You said we were just options you were considering. You said you would never fall for us."Those two idiots, Steven and Simon, thought they could make you jealous by ignoring you and finding someone who looked a little like you. They wanted you to prove that you still cared about us."But I don't want to keep playing this game."Quentin raised his head. His eyes were filled with calculation and something close to madness. "Natalie, I have never cared about Jessica."His grip on my hand tightened. Then he spoke in a humble voice, "If you really have to choose someone to marry,
