RUNE

This is very normal.

No need to panic.

It’s just dinner. I’ve had dinner multiple times. Often times, it was cup noodles. But that was dinner.

None of them ever had me feeling so nervous, like I was about to go to war.

I chanted to myself; breathe, Rune Vitali, breathe.

How could I draw oxygen into my lungs when Mr Creighton was stealing it all with his side glances?!

Ah.

I don’t even know his first name.

Would that be too embarrassing to ask? I mean…I came all over his tongue and I didn’t know his first name?

Should I ask Marcella?

No! That would be even more embarrassing.

A soft tap on my arm drew my attention back to the dinner table. “Ru, are you with me?” Marcella asked.

I realized I had zoned out. I forced out a good natured laugh. “I’m so sorry. I was just…this steak is the best I’ve ever tasted.”

Marcella’s brows shot up. “Really? It’s not all that good. Dad doesn’t know how to pick good restaurants.”

I almost choked.

I know Marcella is used to finery…but if it isn’t this

RUNEThree days later, it was like nothing ever happened. Creighton Law Firm moved operations to a secondary location in the heart of the city, one that was even bigger, and more equipped than the previous one. Construction started on the burned building, and it was going to be turned into a sort of mall. In just a day, everyone seemed to recover. By three days, it was like what had happened, the literal building burning to the ground, was nothing more than a small but inconvenient change in the weather. I couldn’t understand it. And I honestly felt too shy to ask, like I would be seen as a crazy woman if I started asking everyone “why did we recover so fast?”I tried to reach Marcella but her phone wasn’t going through. Dylan said she was fine, that she spoke with him that same day. I wished I could speak to her, so I’d ask her myself what the hell was going through her mind when she did it. The biggest change of all, was Xavier. After visiting Annabelle, I didn’t know how to fa

XAVIER "Alpha Creighton, accept our sincerest condolences." Emerson, the head of the American council of wolves, said with a smile on his face that was anything but sincere."Your condolences for what?" I asked."We got the news of your office building going up in flames. Has the arsonist been found yet?" Levi said. Subtle fishing for information. These old men never change their tactics. "No. I don't need your condolences either. Let's get this done with."The four of them exchanged knowing looks. Harrington was the first to look my way. "In that case, accept our congratulations on today's victory.""Thank you," I replied stiffly, knowing that they didn't call me here to offer petty congratulations. An assistant stepped forward, passing thick, confidential, black files around the conference table. I picked mine up, flipping through the pages. Pictures, texts, none of them meaning anything good. Reports in glaring red letters. "We have some new findings about the rut inducing dru

Rune's POV:After saying goodbye to Marcella for what might be the last time in months, I took a cab and headed to the calmer part of town. It wasn't easy, but I had found Annabelle Hillson. Nothing about her sudden testimony made sense. Same thing about the case. I needed to figure it out for myself, learn the actual truth of what happened. Without a doubt, I believed Xavier had defended and freed a man who should be rotting behind bars. Finding Annabelle's place wasn't difficult. She lived in a lovely neighborhood, one that was filled with all sorts of sounds from overflowing music to kids running around lawns. As I walked the steps up to her house, I recited mentally the questions I had prepared for her. If this goes as planned, I'll be in and out of here in fifteen minutes, head back to my apartment, and ignore the existence of my living room. At her front door, I rang the bell and waited. "Who is it?!" A voice which I guess was hers called out. "Did you order anything?!" Sh

ANSLEM"Forget about it. She's not coming back to you."I looked up from the ruby jewelry set I was admiring. Chris had a pissed look on his face, his arms folded as he glared at me. "Who?" I asked. He rolled his eyes. "Don't give me that shit. I'm talking about the Vitali girl. When will you give it up? It's a miracle she hasn't called the cops on you yet.""Ah. How did you know I was getting this for her?""I know you. How else?"I turned back to the jewelry set. It's beautiful, the deep reds of the stones would contrast nicely to Rune's fair skin. Chris walked up to my side, so close that I could feel his heat. "You know she's not taking you back, right? Now that she's with Creighton."The easy smile on my face faded. Xavier Creighton. I had done a fairly decent job trying not to think about him. He weilds raw power, both in the human world and in our world. How did Rune get into his clutches? What sort of relationship do they have that would warrant him coming over to her fam

XavierAnother case down. Today's case didn't go entirely according to my plans, not that it didn't turn out impressive. I wasn't doubting Brandon's innocence. He got hit by a rut inducing drug, and things went to hell. His girlfriend coming out to defend him was not what I expected. However, it played out perfectly in the end. Another innocent werewolf defended. I didn't expect Marcella showing up. She stood before me, pacing the now empty courtroom, a picture of barely contained rage. In times like this, I wish she hadn't inherited my temper. "What was today about?" I asked, keeping my voice as calm as I could. "You lied to me." She spat, her voice trembling. "But it's fine, not like I didn't expect you to. I came here to tell you that I'm leaving for Greece.""Since when?""Please, dad, don't act like you care." She spat the word "dad" like it was a filthy slur. "Also, I want you to fire Rune. I don't want her working for you. She's not built for the kind of work you do, she's

Rune's POV "What the hell are you doing here?"The words hung in the air, accusing. My mouth opened and closed like a fish, no sound coming out. My brain scrambled for an explanation, any explanation that wouldn't sound completely insane. But Marcella wasn't even looking at me anymore. Her gaze had shifted past my shoulder, landing on someone behind me. Dylan."What the hell are you doing here?" she repeated, and I realized with a flood of relief so intense I nearly collapsed that she wasn't talking to me at all.Dylan stepped forward, his hands raised in a placating gesture. "Marcella, just calm down...""Calm down?" Her voice rose, echoing off the courtroom walls. "You told me he'd be home. You promised me he'd finally take time off. And where is he? Here. Working. Again."I turned and saw Xavier walking toward us, his expression carefully neutral. "Marcella.""Don't." She whirled on him, and I'd never seen her like this. Marcella was always composed, always in control. But now her
