~Liv~

I wiped my nose on the back of my hand after grabbing the tissue, because who cares about manners at this point, and mumbled something that was probably supposed to be thanks but came out more like a croak. The guy stayed crouched for a second, then straightened up and just kind of plopped down on the curb a couple feet away, not too close, not too far, like he knew invading space right now would get him punched.

I sucked the last drag out of the cigarette, burned my fingers because I forgot it was almost gone, and flicked it toward the ground . Missed the storm drain by a mile. Great aim, Liv. Really crushing life tonight.

He didn’t say anything at first, just sat there staring at the parking lot lights like they owed him money. I kept waiting for him to ask if I was okay or what happened or some dumb pickup line, but he didn’t. Finally I side-eyed him and caught him looking at me, not creepy, just checking if I was gonna bolt or burst into flames or whatever.

  • Fake dating the captain    Chapter 34

~Liv~Someone had made a slow-mo version with romantic music. Another had side-by-side photos of Rowan and Kayla from years ago next to last night.I scrolled too fast and felt bile rise.Kayla had posted again this morning. A mirror selfie in Rowan’s jersey the old one from when they datedwith the caption “some things never change.”I threw the phone down and put my head in my hands.Zoe appeared in the doorway from the kitchen, hair in a messy bun, holding two coffees. “Morning, sunshine. You look how I feel.”I groaned. “I wanna die.”“Not allowed.” She handed me a mug. “Drink this. Then shower. Then we delete apps.”Mia shuffled out of her room rubbing her eyes. “She alive?”“Barely,” Zoe said.I sipped the coffee and burned my tongue. Worth it.Mia plopped down next to me. “So. Plan for today: breakfast, shower, block everyone who needs blocking, maybe burn something of his you still have.”“I don’t have anything here.”“Good. Less to burn.”Zoe was already on my phone again. “I’

  • Fake dating the captain    Chapter 33

~Liv~The car hadn’t even rolled to a full stop outside the building when the back door flew open and Zoe yanked me out by my arm like she was extracting me from a burning vehicle.“Move, move, move, get inside before some creep with a phone spots you,” she hissed, slamming the Uber door so hard the driver flinched.I stumbled on the curb in my stupid heels, mascara tracks probably down to my chin, purse banging against my hip. “Zoe? What the hell, how did you… ”“Mia called me freaking out, said you were en route and spiraling, so I beat you here. Obviously.” She was already dragging me toward the entrance, keys jangling. “Also hi, love you, you look like death, let’s go.”I let her pull me because fighting felt impossible. My legs were jelly and my head was starting to throb from the crying and the two cigarettes and the zero food.Inside the elevator she finally let go of my arm and just stared at me, arms crossed, eyes narrowed like she was sizing up an opponent.“You okay?”I bar

  • Fake dating the captain    Chapter 31

~Liv~I couldn’t move at first, just stood there half-hidden by the door like some pathetic ghost watching my own funeral on the jumbotron.Rowan leaned in, all stiff and careful, like he was checking a box, lips barely brushing hers for half a second, clinical as hell, no hands, no heat, nothing. And I thought, okay, fine, damage control, whatever, I hate it but I get it.Then Kayla… fucking Kayla…. grabbed the back of his neck, shoved her tongue in his mouth, and started sucking on his lips like she was trying to win a goddamn prize. The arena lost its mind.Screams, whistles, phones up everywhere, lights flashing like paparazzi at a red carpet.Kayla’s little fan section was on their feet jumping, yelling her name like she’d just scored the winning goal herself.Rowan jerked back fast, eyes wide, looking straight up at the screen like he wanted to die.Too late. The damage was done, the clip already spreading, I could feel it in my bones. My stomach dropped so hard I almost threw u

  • Fake dating the captain    Chapter 30

~Liv~The whole night was already a shitshow wrapped in a fake smile, me clinging to Rowan's arm like we were the perfect couple while we barely looked at each other, and then they sat us at this big table with the whole team and their girlfriends and wives and whatever, and of course Kayla had to plop her perfect ass right on Rowan's left.Kayla. Fucking Kayla. The girl who'd been orbiting him since freshman year, the one with the verified Instagram and the brand deals and the fans who screamed her name like she was a pop star. And Rowan? He laughed right back.I sat on his right, picking at my plate, pretending I was super interested in whatever Jake's girlfriend was saying about her dog's Instagram account or some crap, but really I was watching them out of the corner of my eye.Kayla leaned in every five seconds, touching his arm when she talked, flipping her hair, doing that thing girls do when they want you to notice how shiny it is. "Oh my God, Rowan, remember that party at De

  • Fake dating the captain    Chapter 29

~Liv~I barely got the words out “Let's see how many can fit, my dear friend with benefits” before his whole body went rigid against me. Like someone had flipped a switch and every ounce of heat just drained right out of him.He pulled back so fast my head spun, staring down at me with this look that hit harder than any slap. Eyes wide, mouth parted, like I’d just punched him in the gut and he hadn’t seen it coming.“What the hell?” he said, voice low and cracked right down the middle.I tried to laugh it off, because that’s what I do, right? Deflect with sarcasm before anyone can see I’m freaking out. “What’s wrong?” I asked, reaching for his shirt like I could pull him back down and pretend I hadn’t just said the dumbest thing possible. He didn’t move. Just kept staring. “Are we still friends with benefits?”I opened my mouth, closed it, felt my face go hot. “Ummmm…”His laugh came out sharp, bitter, nothing like the sound he makes when he’s actually happy. “Really? You’ve got to be
