Chapter 5

Author: Joyful Chance
Just as the bull was about to slam into Simon, Eleanor cried out and threw herself in front of him without a second's hesitation.

"Simon, watch out!"

The bull rammed into Eleanor and knocked her to the ground. Simon lost his balance as well, and with only one leg to stand on, he went down hard.

Eleanor clutched the spot where she had been hit, her face white with pain.

Even so, the first thing she did was scramble over to Simon. "Are you okay? Did you hurt your leg? The doctor said the amputation site is really fragile. You can't let it get injured."

Seeing Eleanor so frantic and shaken, Simon was caught off guard for a moment.

"I-I'm fine."

The handler rushed over and got the bull under control, then suddenly called out, "Sir, why is there a red cloth tied around your waist? I told everyone over and over again that nothing red could be anywhere near the show."

The words were barely out of his mouth when a burst of laughter came from the corner.

Eleanor froze. "Poppy! Did you sneak that red cloth onto your dad? Do you have any idea how dangerous that was?"

Poppy hopped out with a cheeky grin, wiggling her butt and making faces.

"That bad guy made Papa's sickness worse. I was getting back at him for Papa!"

A sharp pang shot through Simon's chest, yet his eyes stayed dry. He propped himself up on his crutches, turned, and walked away without a word.

From the moment Poppy started calling Jeremy her father, she had stopped being Simon's daughter, and Simon would never grieve over her again.

That evening, Eleanor invited a crowd of friends over, and the show in the backyard was in full swing.

Simon stayed alone in his room as the phantom limb pain flared up again. He was gritting his teeth through it when the door suddenly flew open.

Eleanor's face was dark, and she spoke through clenched teeth. "Simon, I can't believe you could be this vicious."

Simon looked at her blankly. "What are you talking about?"

Jeremy was holding Poppy in his arms, so choked up he could barely speak.

"Simon, stop pretending.

"Halfway through the show, somebody pushed Poppy into the ring while she was on her way to the bathroom. If the handler hadn't stepped in just in time, the bull would have trampled her. Poppy, tell them. Who pushed you?"

Poppy burst into loud sobs.

She pointed a tiny finger straight at Simon, completely certain. "Papa, Mom, it was him! That bad guy was mad at me for putting the red cloth on him, so he waited until you weren't looking and pushed me into the ring so the bull would kill me!"

Simon's eyes widened in shock.

"Poppy, who taught you to lie like that? I've been in my room all night. I never even left."

Jeremy's voice trembled. "Lying? Simon, are you saying I taught Poppy to lie?"

The moment he finished speaking, Eleanor cut in. "That's impossible.

"I've watched Jeremy raise Poppy like his own all these years. He would never teach her to lie."

Kevin nodded quickly, his tone dripping with sarcasm.

"Exactly. Jeremy's such a good guy. How could he ever bring himself to hurt Poppy? Now that I think about it, I did see someone sneaking around near the ring earlier. He looked a lot like Simon."

Simon stood frozen, the light in his eyes fading little by little.

Marian rushed over and pinched his arm viciously. "Shame on you. You've humiliated this whole family!

"Ever since you found out about Jeremy and Eleanor, you've gone after Jeremy again and again. You're bullying a dying man and a little girl. How did I raise someone so heartless and ungrateful?"

The pain in his body and his heart exploded all at once, and Simon's eyes stung with tears.

His voice came out rough and strained. "I didn't do it. I didn't do anything. I..."

"Enough!"

Eleanor, who had been frowning the entire time, suddenly raised her voice, and her eyes turned completely cold.

"Simon, everyone here is pointing at you. What excuse could you possibly have left? If you're never going to change and you refuse to back down, then I'll throw you into the ring myself and teach you a lesson you won't forget."

Audra's lips curved into a smile."Owl, I can tell you've opened up these past few months and started a new life."I've fallen for you. Will you give me a chance? I'd like to be part of your new life, and I'd like to be the one who helps you heal."Looking into Audra's gentle eyes, Simon felt his heart begin to race.Five years later, the task force's chief researcher got married and made a point of inviting everyone in the unit to the wedding in Brightwater.Setting foot in Brightwater again, Simon found that he saw the city in a completely different light. He walked with his fingers laced through Audra's on one side and his daughter, Sunny Radcliffe, holding his other hand.He felt grounded and content. The three of them laughed and chatted as they came out of the terminal. Sunny ran ahead and bumped into a man, knocking his coffee from his hand."Oh no! I'm so sorry."Simon quickly apologized, but the man only stood frozen, staring at him, his voice trembling."Simon..."

Simon gave a cold laugh."You're right, Poppy. We do have the same blood. Back then, though, when it came down to me or Jeremy, all of you chose to believe him, and he isn't even related to us."If none of you cared about family then, why should I care about it now?"He turned to leave, not wanting to stay a second longer. The moment he turned his back, a dull thud and Poppy's scream rang out at the same time."Grandma! Grandma, what's wrong?"Kevin rushed over to check on Marian. "This is bad. Her breathing and pulse are really weak. She's having a heart attack. We need to get her to a hospital."Simon faltered for a moment, yet he did not stop walking."Daddy!"Poppy's hysterical voice rang out behind him. "Grandma just collapsed. How can you be so heartless and walk away without even looking back?"Eleanor hurried forward and caught Simon by the arm, her voice trembling with desperation."Simon, I'm begging you, okay?"Marian needs you. Poppy needs you too. Even if you d

After Simon returned to the task force, everything seemed to go back to the way it had been.Audra did not ask a single question or pry in any way. It was as if nothing had happened at all.Simon still trained and went on missions alone every day. The difference was that he smiled much more often now. When a teammate struck up a conversation with him, he no longer slipped away without a word. Instead, he could chat easily for a while. When Audra sat across from him at meals, he no longer wolfed down his food and left. Instead, he eagerly told her all about that day's mission. When others in the unit invited him out, he no longer turned them down. Instead, he went along with a smile."Sure. Count me in."Then one day, just after he finished a mission, Audra called him into her office, her expression grave."Owl, someone wants to see you."Simon was in the middle of pulling off his gloves, and his hands froze.Who else could have tracked him down here besides Eleanor and Kevin,

Eleanor flinched at the mockery in Simon’s laugh. She hung her head like a child who had done something wrong."I'm sorry, Simon. I just want you to know that none of us meant to treat you like that."If you'll just come home with me, I'll spend the rest of my life making it up to you. Can't we go back to the way things were?"At that, Simon laughed even louder, the sound harsh and grating, and his eyes reddened despite himself."Sure, you were all lied to. Eleanor, how do you have the nerve to say you didn't mean it, though?"When I got hit by that car, did Jeremy make you ignore me? No. You were so wrapped up in Jeremy that you never even glanced at your own husband."When Jeremy framed me for hurting Poppy, did he make you throw me into that ring? No. You couldn't stand to see Jeremy cry, so you decided to teach me a lesson I'd never forget."Every word Simon said stabbed into Eleanor's heart like a knife. She covered her face as tears slipped through her fingers."Stop. Even though Simon had his back to the door, his heart lurched. He had known that voice for more than twenty years. There was no way he could mistake it.Eleanor had found him after all.Why would she not just let him go?Eleanor rushed forward and threw her arms around Simon like a woman possessed, holding him so tightly it was as if she never meant to let go."Simon, do you have any idea how crazy I've been going since you disappeared? How could you leave Poppy and me behind and run off to some place this remote?"Her scent and her warmth were both achingly familiar, yet Simon no longer felt that he belonged in her arms.He took a deep breath, pushed Eleanor away with all his strength, and looked at her coldly."Don't touch me. You have the wrong person."Kevin, who had come in right behind Eleanor, was already so choked up he could barely speak. He rushed forward, his face full of anguish. "Simon, don't say things you don't mean. We've been going out of our minds looking fo

Lying in the hospital bed, Simon let his mind drift, and he suddenly remembered the day he first arrived at the task force.Back then, he had not dared to stay in Brightwater for even a moment, terrified that Eleanor and the others would drag him back to give Jeremy his stem cells. He had quickly contacted the task force and flown in secret to Highmoor on their private helicopter. His body had been far too weak. The moment he met Audra, he blacked out before he could say a word.In his hazy state, nightmares had clung to him. Over and over, he dreamed of Kevin choking him and calling him vicious. He dreamed of Eleanor's eyes full of disgust and disappointment. "Simon, you keep picking fights with a sick man, and you just won't let it go. You're not half the man Jeremy is."He dreamed of Marian disowning him and Poppy wanting nothing to do with him.In his blurry memories, the task force commander had stayed by his side the entire time, instructing the doctors to treat his wounds
