Chapter 4

Autor: Joyful Chance
"I knew you'd make a scene once you found out, but I never thought you'd go this far," Marian snapped. "Are you trying to drive your brother into an early grave?"

Eleanor helped Jeremy to his feet.

Those eyes, once so tender and full of love, were now filled with disgust and disappointment.

"Simon, I thought you could be a little more generous toward Jeremy for my sake. I never imagined you could be this selfish and cruel.

"Take some time to think about what you've done. When you've come to your senses, I'll come back for you."

Before they left, Poppy ran at Simon, crying, and shoved him to the floor with all her strength.

"Papa Jeremy has it hard enough already. Don't you dare pick on him! You're a bad guy, and I hate you! You deserve to get bullied online!"

The door slammed shut, and Simon's heart clenched.

Bullied online? What was she talking about?

He fumbled for his phone in a panic, and the first thing he saw was a trending headline.

[Famous Pilot Simon Radcliffe Steals His Own Brother's Wife!]

Countless strangers who knew nothing of the truth called him a gold digger and a kept man, flooding the comments with filth too vile to read.

Some had maliciously photoshopped a picture of him in his flight uniform into a funeral portrait, telling him to hurry up and die.

Others went further, reporting him to the flight squadron for misconduct and demanding severe punishment.

Before Simon could offer a single word of explanation, the squadron's official website had wiped every honor he had spent half his life risking his neck to earn.

Kevin, now the squadron commander, responded to the public outcry directly from his personal account.

Kevin: [Thank you all for bringing this to our attention. Pilot Simon Radcliffe will be dismissed from the squadron.]

When Eleanor and Marian liked the post, it sealed Simon's disgrace for good.

All the strength drained out of him, and his tears fell one by one onto the floor.

He remembered how his father, Robert Radcliffe, had always favored the sickly Jeremy back when he was still alive.

Whenever the two of them got into trouble together, only Simon was punished. When only five strawberries were left in the house, his father always gave Jeremy three. When Jeremy scored a 61 on a test, his father praised him for trying so hard. The one time Simon scored a 99, his father pulled out a ruler and lectured him about goofing off.

Every time, his mother took his side and confronted his father, her voice full of hurt. "Robert, don't forget that Simon is our own flesh and blood."

Every time Simon stormed out of the house after a fight with his father, Eleanor was always there to comfort him gently.

"It's okay. Your dad might not care about you, but I do. No matter what happens, I'll always be on your side."

When Kevin heard about all this, he had clapped Simon on the shoulder, his face full of sympathy.

"Simon, from now on, you've got me. I'll never let anyone treat you like that again."

None of them were there for him anymore.

Simon curled up on the cold floor, clutching the empty leg of his pants as tears fell in silence.

None of them showed up again for the next few days.

Through every night he woke from nightmares as phantom limb pain flared, every dressing change that tore the gauze away along with newly healed flesh, and every agonizing session of learning to stand that left his clothes soaked in sweat, Simon gritted his teeth and endured it alone.

On the day he was discharged, Simon was packing his things when Eleanor pushed the door open and set the squadron's dismissal notice on the table.

"Your leg is ruined, and so is your reputation. I'm sure you've had plenty of time to think things over by now."

Simon gave a bitter laugh. "And if I say I haven't, what's next? Will I get doxxed by the whole internet?"

Eleanor's brow tightened.

"Simon, stop being so stubborn. You've gone after Jeremy over and over again. This is just a slap on the wrist. You've learned your lesson, and as long as you stop giving Jeremy a hard time, we'll treat you well."

With that, she took the clothes from him without asking and reached for his hand.

"It hurts me to see you like this, too. Let's stop fighting. Come home with me."

Her hand was soft and warm. Simon's heart, however, had long since stopped feeling any warmth.

When they arrived home, Simon immediately noticed that every bellflower Eleanor had once planted for him in the backyard had been torn out.

A crew was building a huge temporary stage on the bare ground, and a bull was penned inside a fence off to one side.

Eleanor's voice was a little stiff. "Simon, I'll replant the flowers for you later.

"Jeremy wanted to see a circus, but he's too weak to travel, so I had a circus troupe come put on a show for him here at the house."

Jeremy again.

A lump rose in Simon's throat as he remembered Eleanor planting that whole field of flowers herself, one by one.

Back then, she had been covered in dirt, her hands full of scrapes, yet her smile had been radiant.

"Bellflowers stand for everlasting love. I'm going to take good care of them until the day we both grow old."

There had been a time when even one wilted flower would keep Simon up at night.

Now he only shook his head calmly. "Don't bother."

The love was long gone, the flowers were dead, and he, too, was leaving soon.

Leaning on his crutches, Simon slowly made his way to his room.

Just as he passed the fence, the bull that had been docile a moment earlier began snorting heavily. It suddenly went wild, smashed through the fence, and charged straight at Simon.

Audra's lips curved into a smile."Owl, I can tell you've opened up these past few months and started a new life."I've fallen for you. Will you give me a chance? I'd like to be part of your new life, and I'd like to be the one who helps you heal."Looking into Audra's gentle eyes, Simon felt his heart begin to race.Five years later, the task force's chief researcher got married and made a point of inviting everyone in the unit to the wedding in Brightwater.Setting foot in Brightwater again, Simon found that he saw the city in a completely different light. He walked with his fingers laced through Audra's on one side and his daughter, Sunny Radcliffe, holding his other hand.He felt grounded and content. The three of them laughed and chatted as they came out of the terminal. Sunny ran ahead and bumped into a man, knocking his coffee from his hand."Oh no! I'm so sorry."Simon quickly apologized, but the man only stood frozen, staring at him, his voice trembling."Simon..."

Simon gave a cold laugh."You're right, Poppy. We do have the same blood. Back then, though, when it came down to me or Jeremy, all of you chose to believe him, and he isn't even related to us."If none of you cared about family then, why should I care about it now?"He turned to leave, not wanting to stay a second longer. The moment he turned his back, a dull thud and Poppy's scream rang out at the same time."Grandma! Grandma, what's wrong?"Kevin rushed over to check on Marian. "This is bad. Her breathing and pulse are really weak. She's having a heart attack. We need to get her to a hospital."Simon faltered for a moment, yet he did not stop walking."Daddy!"Poppy's hysterical voice rang out behind him. "Grandma just collapsed. How can you be so heartless and walk away without even looking back?"Eleanor hurried forward and caught Simon by the arm, her voice trembling with desperation."Simon, I'm begging you, okay?"Marian needs you. Poppy needs you too. Even if you d

After Simon returned to the task force, everything seemed to go back to the way it had been.Audra did not ask a single question or pry in any way. It was as if nothing had happened at all.Simon still trained and went on missions alone every day. The difference was that he smiled much more often now. When a teammate struck up a conversation with him, he no longer slipped away without a word. Instead, he could chat easily for a while. When Audra sat across from him at meals, he no longer wolfed down his food and left. Instead, he eagerly told her all about that day's mission. When others in the unit invited him out, he no longer turned them down. Instead, he went along with a smile."Sure. Count me in."Then one day, just after he finished a mission, Audra called him into her office, her expression grave."Owl, someone wants to see you."Simon was in the middle of pulling off his gloves, and his hands froze.Who else could have tracked him down here besides Eleanor and Kevin,

Eleanor flinched at the mockery in Simon’s laugh. She hung her head like a child who had done something wrong."I'm sorry, Simon. I just want you to know that none of us meant to treat you like that."If you'll just come home with me, I'll spend the rest of my life making it up to you. Can't we go back to the way things were?"At that, Simon laughed even louder, the sound harsh and grating, and his eyes reddened despite himself."Sure, you were all lied to. Eleanor, how do you have the nerve to say you didn't mean it, though?"When I got hit by that car, did Jeremy make you ignore me? No. You were so wrapped up in Jeremy that you never even glanced at your own husband."When Jeremy framed me for hurting Poppy, did he make you throw me into that ring? No. You couldn't stand to see Jeremy cry, so you decided to teach me a lesson I'd never forget."Every word Simon said stabbed into Eleanor's heart like a knife. She covered her face as tears slipped through her fingers."Stop. Even though Simon had his back to the door, his heart lurched. He had known that voice for more than twenty years. There was no way he could mistake it.Eleanor had found him after all.Why would she not just let him go?Eleanor rushed forward and threw her arms around Simon like a woman possessed, holding him so tightly it was as if she never meant to let go."Simon, do you have any idea how crazy I've been going since you disappeared? How could you leave Poppy and me behind and run off to some place this remote?"Her scent and her warmth were both achingly familiar, yet Simon no longer felt that he belonged in her arms.He took a deep breath, pushed Eleanor away with all his strength, and looked at her coldly."Don't touch me. You have the wrong person."Kevin, who had come in right behind Eleanor, was already so choked up he could barely speak. He rushed forward, his face full of anguish. "Simon, don't say things you don't mean. We've been going out of our minds looking fo

Lying in the hospital bed, Simon let his mind drift, and he suddenly remembered the day he first arrived at the task force.Back then, he had not dared to stay in Brightwater for even a moment, terrified that Eleanor and the others would drag him back to give Jeremy his stem cells. He had quickly contacted the task force and flown in secret to Highmoor on their private helicopter. His body had been far too weak. The moment he met Audra, he blacked out before he could say a word.In his hazy state, nightmares had clung to him. Over and over, he dreamed of Kevin choking him and calling him vicious. He dreamed of Eleanor's eyes full of disgust and disappointment. "Simon, you keep picking fights with a sick man, and you just won't let it go. You're not half the man Jeremy is."He dreamed of Marian disowning him and Poppy wanting nothing to do with him.In his blurry memories, the task force commander had stayed by his side the entire time, instructing the doctors to treat his wounds
