Jennifer stood in front of her vanity mirror, adjusting her earrings when her phone buzzed. She picked it up lazily, expecting a message from Kelvin, since they had plans later, but her brows pinched when she saw the sender’s name.

Curious, she unlocked it.

Her manicured fingers trembled as she stared at her phone, eyes wide in disbelief.

"I’m getting married this weekend. Don’t you want to attend?"

She read the message again. A photo of a real, legal marriage certificate was attached beneath.

Her mouth twisted, and with a strangled gasp, she tossed the phone onto the bed like it had burned her.

"She didn’t," Jennifer whispered, shaking her head furiously. "She did not."

She snatched the phone back up and rushed downstairs, heels clicking heavily on the stairs.

“Mom!” she called as she burst into her mother’s room.

The older woman was sitting in front of a mirror, brushing her hair. She turned, frowning as Jennifer held out the phone with trembling fingers.

"You need to see this."
