Chapter 6

Author: Washing Wheat
I climbed onto the windowsill and was about to jump when a strong hand shot out of the darkness and clamped around my ankle.

"Elio, where do you think you're going?"

At some point, Adeline had appeared in the garden below. She had not bothered with an umbrella, and the rain had soaked straight through her expensive pantsuit.

She tilted her head back and looked up at me through the curtain of rain, her eyes so fixated that they sent a chill down my spine. "It's windy up there. It's dangerous. Be good and go back inside, okay?"

I clung to the window frame. "Adeline, let go of me! I don't want to stay here anymore! You're all insane!"

Adeline did not let go. She yanked down even harder. My foot slipped, and I fell from the second floor with no way to stop myself. "Ah!"

I did not hit the cold concrete. I landed against something solid and cold instead. Adeline had broken my fall, and she held on to me so tightly that she nearly cracked my ribs.

"See, Elio? You can't get away. Even if you fall from the sky, the only place you'll land is in my arms."

She stroked my rain‑soaked hair, her voice both tender and cruel. "After the surgery tomorrow, you'll be completely weak. You won't even have the strength to stand. I'll make you the most beautiful cage, and I'll lock your wrists and ankles in gold chains.

"Every day, I'll be the only one you see and the only one you can depend on. Doesn't that make you happy, Elio?"

I looked at her face, deathly pale in the flash of lightning, and at last I felt a deep and real fear.

The next morning, the rain had stopped. Evelyn and Adeline marched me between them through the VIP entrance of a private hospital. I barely had the strength to walk.

After getting caught in the rain the night before, I had come down with a high fever, but Evelyn did not care.

"A little fever never killed anyone." She tossed the thermometer into the trash and turned coldly to the nurse.

"Take him straight in for the marrow draw. Hudson can't wait any longer."

I was pinned down on a cold operating table beneath the glaring surgical lights. A doctor walked in holding a frighteningly thick biopsy needle. He looked at my pale face and turned to Evelyn, hesitant.

"Ms. Sheridan, this gentleman's vitals are extremely poor. If we take that much marrow from him now, it could cause irreversible organ failure."

Evelyn frowned. "His body isn't like ours. He won't die. Do it. If anything happens, I'll take responsibility."

The doctor had no choice. He turned and rolled me onto my side. "Prepare the local anesthetic."

"No anesthetic." Evelyn's cold voice rang through the operating room.

The doctor whipped around. "Ms. Sheridan, that's against protocol. A bone marrow biopsy is excruciating. Without anesthesia, the patient could go into shock from the pain."

Evelyn walked to the side of the operating table and looked down at me. "He doesn't need it. Isn't he throwing a tantrum and trying to leave? Then let him feel every second of it. Pain is the only thing that'll make him remember who he belongs to."

I closed my eyes in despair. In that moment, I gave up even trying to struggle.

The long, thick needle pierced the skin over my lower spine and bored straight into the bone.

"Ahh!" I let out a piercing scream, and my body jerked violently like a fish out of water.

The pain was beyond anything words could describe. It felt as though the needle were grinding my very soul to pieces. My fingernails dug into the edge of the operating table so hard that two of them snapped off.

The clouds began to churn, and faint golden light flickered among them. I knew the passage to take me home had opened."Nothing." I turned my gaze back down, my voice as calm as if I were talking about the weather. "It was only a judgment that came three years too late."I turned and walked out one step at a time. The crowd parted on its own, leaving a wide path for me.Just as I was about to step through the hospital doors, Evelyn summoned the last of her strength. She scrambled out of the crowd and shouted at my back."Elio! If... If we could start over... If I had never brought Hudson home, if I had always treated you the way I did that first year... Would you... Would you have stayed? Would you have been my husband for the rest of my life?"Her voice was full of desperate pleading and one last shred of hope. She was trying to use "what if" to cover up the wrongs she had already done.I stopped walking, but I did not look back. I only turned my face slightly and left her with

"Did you really think acting devoted could cover up how selfish you are? You kept saying you loved me, but you never cared how much pain I was in."What you wanted was never me. All you wanted was a plaything you could control, something that depended on you completely."Adeline was drenched in sweat from the pain, but she still stared at me, her eyes full of an obsession that would not let go."That's not true... I do love you... If it weren't for you, I would've frozen to death under that bridge when I was eight! You gave me a second chance at life, so why shouldn't you be mine?"I looked at her and gave my right hand a light flick. A streak of golden light shot into Adeline's forehead.Adeline's whole body jolted, and her eyes suddenly lost their focus."Since you miss that bridge so much, I'll take back everything you've gained in this world. Go back to being the beggar who was about to freeze to death."The moment the golden light sank into her forehead, it was as if her so

She clutched her chest, as if a gaping hole had been torn through it.On the gurney nearby, Hudson was barely breathing. He struggled to turn his head, and his eyes, which had always been so calculating, held nothing but endless fear."Elio... Save me..."He reached out a skeletal hand toward me, his voice as shrill as a lost soul's. "If you don't save me, Evelyn will kill you!"He was still trying to use Evelyn to threaten me.I walked unhurriedly over to the gurney and looked down at his face, now covered in age spots from how fast he was aging. "Kill me?"I raised an eyebrow and glanced at Evelyn, who was still on the ground, clutching her finger and howling. "She can't even stand up right now. How exactly is she going to kill me?"Hudson was desperate. He suddenly threw himself off the gurney and wrapped his arms tightly around my ankle."I was wrong! I'm begging you, give me back my life! I don't want your clothes anymore, and I won't try to take Evelyn from you either! Ju

I looked down at Evelyn, who was kneeling at my feet. "Why?"I tilted my head, my voice full of innocent curiosity, just as it had been when I first arrived in the human world. "Didn't you say he had a terminal illness and would die, while I was an angel and couldn't?"Evelyn nodded frantically. "Yes! Yes! So save him! Nothing will happen to you!"I smiled, and it was a dazzling smile. "But I already died just now."I pointed at the patch of concrete where I had fallen. "Besides, the reason he's like this now is that I took back all the life I blessed him with before."I watched Evelyn's pupils widen and spelled it out word by word. "I've taken back the life I gave him.""You!" Evelyn pointed at me, her eyes wild with rage, as if she were looking at a monster. "You're so vicious! How could you be this cruel?"I raised my foot and brought it down on the finger she was pointing at me, grinding it without mercy. There was a sharp crack."Ahh!" Evelyn let out a piercing scream.I

Both women were flung backward and slammed hard into the hospital lobby's glass doors. The glass shattered with a piercing crash."Ugh..." Evelyn clutched her chest and coughed up a mouthful of blood. She stared at me in shock, as if she could not believe that force had come from me."Elio... What are you doing?"Adeline struggled to her feet, one hand pressed to her shoulder. Her delicate gold‑rimmed glasses lay shattered across the floor, and her eyes were full of disbelief. "Elio, did you just hit me?"I walked slowly toward them and looked down at the two mortals as if they were insects. "I told you before. I won't be anyone's cure, and I won't be anyone's caged bird."My voice was calm, yet it carried a weight no one could resist. "Evelyn, you took my blood and my bone marrow and told me I owed you. Now I have paid that debt with my life."Adeline, you used that so‑called light to guilt me and tried to lock me in a cage. Now that light has gone out."I watched their faces g
