Chapter 5

Author: Washing Wheat
"I told you, this is something you have to go through. If I don't break your wings completely, how else would you ever choose to stay with me?"

She said it as if it were obvious, as if pushing me into the abyss were the greatest gift she could give me.

I closed my eyes. I did not want to look at her hypocritical face anymore.

Hudson stood off to the side, and a flash of jealousy crossed his eyes as he watched Adeline lower herself for me. "Wow, Ms. Wray, you're really devoted. Too bad no matter how hard you try, his marrow is still coming to me in the end."

Adeline rose and shot Hudson a cold look. "Mr. Lowry, I'd watch it if I were you. If he hadn't wanted to save you, do you really think you'd still be alive?"

Hudson's expression changed. He gave a cold huff, turned, and went back to the guest room.

That evening, Evelyn hurried home from the office. She brought back a pile of expensive health supplements, all of them for Hudson.

At dinner, I sat at the far end of the table and watched Evelyn serve Hudson the best cut of salmon. "Eat up, Hudson. You'll need your strength for the surgery tomorrow."

Hudson smiled obediently and glanced my way. "Evelyn, he keeps staring at us. Do you think he wants some too?"

Evelyn frowned without turning her head. "He doesn't need to eat. He's an angel. He won't starve."

I set down my fork quietly. It was true that I could not feel hunger, but I could feel the life draining out of my body.

After dinner, Evelyn called me into the study and handed me a document. "Sign this."

I looked down. It was a consent form for voluntary bone marrow donation.

I pushed it away. "I won't sign it. Evelyn, I'm not your property."

Evelyn slammed her hand on the desk and shot to her feet. "Elio! Don't make this harder than it has to be! I've taken care of you for three years! I taught you how to fit into this world, and this is how you repay me? It's just a little bone marrow. It's not going to kill you!"

I looked at her furious face. "And after that? Will you let me go?"

Evelyn froze. It seemed she had never considered that I might leave. "Go? Where would you even go?"

She let out a cold laugh. "You don't even have ID. Without me, you don't legally exist. Just be good and sign it, and once Hudson gets better, you'll still be my husband."

I shook my head. "I don't want to be your husband anymore. I just want to leave."

Evelyn's face turned livid. She grabbed my chin and forced me to look up at her. "Where do you think you're going? To Adeline? You think she's any better? All she wants is the power inside you! Elio, you're mine in this life, and you'll still be mine after you die!"

She pulled a pen out of the drawer, forced it into my right hand, and dragged my hand across the signature line in one heavy stroke. "There."

Evelyn let go and looked at the signature with satisfaction. "Eight o'clock tomorrow morning. I'll see you at the hospital."

She took the form and walked out of the study, locking the door behind her.

I was shut inside the study. Outside, a heavy rain had begun to fall. I went to the window and pushed it open, and a bone‑chilling wind swept the rain against my face.

I wanted to jump. This was only the second floor, which was not high for me. If I jumped and ran into the night, maybe I could find my way home.

  • Fallen Light   Chapter 14

The clouds began to churn, and faint golden light flickered among them. I knew the passage to take me home had opened."Nothing." I turned my gaze back down, my voice as calm as if I were talking about the weather. "It was only a judgment that came three years too late."I turned and walked out one step at a time. The crowd parted on its own, leaving a wide path for me.Just as I was about to step through the hospital doors, Evelyn summoned the last of her strength. She scrambled out of the crowd and shouted at my back."Elio! If... If we could start over... If I had never brought Hudson home, if I had always treated you the way I did that first year... Would you... Would you have stayed? Would you have been my husband for the rest of my life?"Her voice was full of desperate pleading and one last shred of hope. She was trying to use "what if" to cover up the wrongs she had already done.I stopped walking, but I did not look back. I only turned my face slightly and left her with

  • Fallen Light   Chapter 13

"Did you really think acting devoted could cover up how selfish you are? You kept saying you loved me, but you never cared how much pain I was in."What you wanted was never me. All you wanted was a plaything you could control, something that depended on you completely."Adeline was drenched in sweat from the pain, but she still stared at me, her eyes full of an obsession that would not let go."That's not true... I do love you... If it weren't for you, I would've frozen to death under that bridge when I was eight! You gave me a second chance at life, so why shouldn't you be mine?"I looked at her and gave my right hand a light flick. A streak of golden light shot into Adeline's forehead.Adeline's whole body jolted, and her eyes suddenly lost their focus."Since you miss that bridge so much, I'll take back everything you've gained in this world. Go back to being the beggar who was about to freeze to death."The moment the golden light sank into her forehead, it was as if her so

She clutched her chest, as if a gaping hole had been torn through it.On the gurney nearby, Hudson was barely breathing. He struggled to turn his head, and his eyes, which had always been so calculating, held nothing but endless fear."Elio... Save me..."He reached out a skeletal hand toward me, his voice as shrill as a lost soul's. "If you don't save me, Evelyn will kill you!"He was still trying to use Evelyn to threaten me.I walked unhurriedly over to the gurney and looked down at his face, now covered in age spots from how fast he was aging. "Kill me?"I raised an eyebrow and glanced at Evelyn, who was still on the ground, clutching her finger and howling. "She can't even stand up right now. How exactly is she going to kill me?"Hudson was desperate. He suddenly threw himself off the gurney and wrapped his arms tightly around my ankle."I was wrong! I'm begging you, give me back my life! I don't want your clothes anymore, and I won't try to take Evelyn from you either! Ju

I looked down at Evelyn, who was kneeling at my feet. "Why?"I tilted my head, my voice full of innocent curiosity, just as it had been when I first arrived in the human world. "Didn't you say he had a terminal illness and would die, while I was an angel and couldn't?"Evelyn nodded frantically. "Yes! Yes! So save him! Nothing will happen to you!"I smiled, and it was a dazzling smile. "But I already died just now."I pointed at the patch of concrete where I had fallen. "Besides, the reason he's like this now is that I took back all the life I blessed him with before."I watched Evelyn's pupils widen and spelled it out word by word. "I've taken back the life I gave him.""You!" Evelyn pointed at me, her eyes wild with rage, as if she were looking at a monster. "You're so vicious! How could you be this cruel?"I raised my foot and brought it down on the finger she was pointing at me, grinding it without mercy. There was a sharp crack."Ahh!" Evelyn let out a piercing scream.I

Both women were flung backward and slammed hard into the hospital lobby's glass doors. The glass shattered with a piercing crash."Ugh..." Evelyn clutched her chest and coughed up a mouthful of blood. She stared at me in shock, as if she could not believe that force had come from me."Elio... What are you doing?"Adeline struggled to her feet, one hand pressed to her shoulder. Her delicate gold‑rimmed glasses lay shattered across the floor, and her eyes were full of disbelief. "Elio, did you just hit me?"I walked slowly toward them and looked down at the two mortals as if they were insects. "I told you before. I won't be anyone's cure, and I won't be anyone's caged bird."My voice was calm, yet it carried a weight no one could resist. "Evelyn, you took my blood and my bone marrow and told me I owed you. Now I have paid that debt with my life."Adeline, you used that so‑called light to guilt me and tried to lock me in a cage. Now that light has gone out."I watched their faces g
