Chapter 3

Author: Existence
That evening, Lily came home. A faint soapy smell clung to her, the same scent that always lingered on Josh.

"Neil, you shouldn't have gone to see Josh on your own. I don't want today happening again. Josh scares easily. Don't go frightening him."

"Your father sent me," I said flatly.

Lily blinked, and irritation crept into her expression. "He told you to go and you just went? Since when do you listen to him?"

I was sitting on the couch, my father's medical chart in my hands. I glanced up at her. "Some things need to be settled, one way or another."

She frowned, clearly thrown by how cool I was being toward her. She came over, her eyes landing on the chart in my hands, and her tone softened.

"How's your dad doing?"

"About the same."

My father had kidney failure. He'd been on dialysis for two years now. Whatever else you could say about Lily, she'd never once been stingy about paying for his treatment.

She sighed and sat down beside me, leaning in like she wanted to rest her head on my shoulder. I pulled away without thinking.

Her body went rigid. Her expression soured.

"Still angry?" She tried again. "Neil, I know I handled things badly today. But Josh's still practically a kid. He's never had to deal with a scene like that before. I'll come with you to see your dad tomorrow, all right?"

I looked at her, dull and unmoved, and found nothing in her eyes but the urge to smooth things over after doing something wrong, not real concern.

"Fine."

My father had genuinely wanted to see her. Lily had been drifting from one bed to another for so long that it had been ages since she'd last visited him.

The next day, we went to the hospital. Before we'd even reached his room, we ran into Josh in the payment lobby, a fistful of small bills in his hand, wiping at his eyes in front of the cashier's window.

"Josh?"

Lily let go of my hand almost without thinking and strode over.

"What's wrong? Is it your brother's medical bill? Do you not have enough?"

Josh looked up, his face streaked with tears. The second he saw Lily, he took a step back.

"Lily, I... I can manage on my own."

"Don't be ridiculous. Where would you even get that kind of money?"

Lily pulled out her card without a second thought and pressed it into his hand.

Josh shook his head, pushing it back. "No, I can't take your money. Neil will get the wrong idea..."

"Who cares what he thinks, at a time like this!"

Lily's face was pure sympathy. She'd forgotten I was even standing there.

She took Josh's hand and pulled him straight toward the stairwell.

"I need to talk to you."

After they walked off, the people around us started muttering.

"Wasn't that woman just with this man a second ago?"

"Right? Why'd she run off holding some other guy's hand?"

"Tsk, guess the husband doesn't measure up to the lover boy."

I laughed at myself and, against my better judgment, followed them anyway.

The stairwell door was left ajar. Inside, Lily had her arms around Josh, her face buried against his chest, her eyes full of pain and tenderness.

"Josh, how much longer are you going to torture me like this?"

Josh's face twisted with conflict. "Lily, you have a husband. I can't be the other man. I have my principles."

"Forget your principles!"

Lily's voice broke. She reached up and kissed him.

The kiss was fervent, with an abandon I'd never once seen from her.

At last, their lips parted. Lily gripped his hand tight, her voice hoarse with pain.

"Josh, what am I supposed to do about you?"

Tears rolled down Josh's cheeks, landing on the back of her hand. "Lily, please don't come looking for me again."

"Don't say that!"

Lily pulled him close. "I won't divorce Neil. But my heart, I gave that to you a long time ago. Josh, don't push me away. Please."

I stood outside the door, ice cold from head to foot.

So this was love, at least the version she felt for Josh. Then what had these five years of marriage been? What had it meant, all those times Lily had gone to war with her own family for my sake?

Josh cried, pushed her away, and ran.

Lily stood frozen where she was, unmoving for a long time.

I choked back the sting in my eyes and turned toward my father's room.

Josh looked at her like this, and let out a wild, deranged laugh. "Lily, you had this coming! This is exactly what you get for playing with people's hearts!"You're nothing but a selfish piece of trash. And look at you now: your husband's gone, your body's falling apart, and your father-in-law's dead because of you. You're going to end up alone, for the rest of your life!"Lily's head snapped up. Her bloodshot eyes held nothing but a cold, dead calm. She rose slowly off the floor and walked, step by step, toward Josh, who was still laughing like a madman."What do I get?"She repeated the words softly, the corner of her mouth curling into something that made his blood run cold."If it's payback we're talking about, then let's make sure no one gets to walk away from this."The killing intent in her eyes stopped Josh's laughter cold. He flinched back on instinct. "You... what are you going to do? Murder is a crime!""Kill you?" Lily looked down at him. "That would be letting you

Lily froze, most of the drunkenness burning off her at once."What divorce certificate? Dad, don't joke with me.""Who's joking?" Raymond glared at her, disgusted. "It's sitting right there on the coffee table at home. How big does the folder have to be before you notice it?"Her mind went blank. Last time she'd been home, she'd been too busy fuming over Neil ignoring her to notice anything on that table at all."That's not possible... it can't be..."She muttered it under her breath, then shoved the model beside her aside and bolted for her car parked at the curb."Lily! Where are you going?" The model grabbed at her sleeve."Get off me!"She wrenched her arm free, hands shaking as she started the engine, and floored it, running every red light the whole way home. She threw the door open and there it was, the very first thing she saw: the divorce certificate lying on the coffee table. The room spun.Lily raced back to the family estate like a woman out of her mind and found

Raymond was as good as his word. Men cornered Josh in an alley and beat him savagely, snapping the bone in his left arm.The news reached me while I sat on a train, on my way to my father's hometown. They told me Lily had rushed to the hospital like a woman possessed, guarding Josh with that same fierce devotion she'd once shown me, years ago. For weeks, she barely left his bedside, too consumed to even go home. So by the time I had fully vanished, and the dust had settled over our empty house, she never noticed at all.At first, I imagine the freedom felt refreshing to her. Without my constant restraint, without that perpetually wounded face of mine hanging around, the air itself must have tasted sweeter. But little by little, I knew she'd start to miss me. And sure enough, the novelty with Josh began to wear off.During those weeks at his bedside, they ended up in bed together—as these things tend to go. Josh's young body and his skill between the sheets gave her a thrill she'd

Not long after Lily left, Raymond arrived. He looked at me, dressed all in black, worn down to skin and bone, and for just a moment, something like sympathy crossed his usually stern face."Your father... he's gone?"I nodded, and numbly set the divorce papers down on the table. "I'll sign. But I have one condition. I want Josh to pay for this. I want him ruined, his name dragged through the mud."Raymond looked at me with contempt. "Neil, what gives you the standing to bargain with me?""The standing of being Lily's lawful husband." My voice was flat. "If I don't get a divorce, I'll make a scene at the company every day. I'll go crying to the press. I'll grind the Marshall name into the dirt."I stared him down, my eyes full of resolve. "If you want this divorce, you don't have a choice."His expression darkened completely. He said nothing for a long time. Then, finally, he gave in."Fine. Josh's background is beneath us. He was never good enough for this family to begin with.

The resuscitation effort lasted two full hours.I sat collapsed on the cold hallway floor, shaking without control. The old, familiar dread of being abandoned by the entire world came crashing back.I thought of my mother, the gambler, of the rainy night she'd walked out on Dad and me, only to die horribly under the wheels of a car. I thought of all those years Dad spent bleeding himself dry to pay off her staggering debts, dragging me through one hard, grinding day after another just to survive.I pressed my hands together and prayed, tears striking the backs of my knuckles.'Please. Don't take Dad from me. I already have nothing left. Don't take him too.'But heaven never listens to the prayers of the unlucky. The doctor came out, shaking his head with genuine regret."I'm sorry. We did everything we could." He hesitated, then added, "His condition had been stable. Something must have caused a severe shock, and it triggered cardiac arrest...""A shock?" My mind went blank f

Dad's spirits looked good that day. The doctor had said that if he kept his spirits up, he could live for years yet.He looked mildly confused when he saw me walk in alone. "Neil, where's Lily? Didn't you say you'd come together today?"I swallowed down the ache in my chest and forced a smile. "Something came up at the office. She got called back for a meeting. You know how it is, Dad, running a company that size keeps her slammed."He looked a little disappointed, but nodded anyway. "Putting the work first is a good thing. Lily's a good girl, and she cares about you. Try to be understanding with her."I turned away and let the tears fall silently.'I'm sorry, Dad. That's the last lie I'll ever tell you.'I spent the whole afternoon with him, then dragged my exhausted body back home.Lily was already there, sitting on the couch, her expression strained."Where were you? I looked all over the hospital for you."I looked at her and felt nothing but revulsion at how fake she was.
