Chapter 6

Author: Existence
Not long after Lily left, Raymond arrived.

He looked at me, dressed all in black, worn down to skin and bone, and for just a moment, something like sympathy crossed his usually stern face.

"Your father... he's gone?"

I nodded, and numbly set the divorce papers down on the table. "I'll sign. But I have one condition. I want Josh to pay for this. I want him ruined, his name dragged through the mud."

Raymond looked at me with contempt. "Neil, what gives you the standing to bargain with me?"

Josh looked at her like this, and let out a wild, deranged laugh. "Lily, you had this coming! This is exactly what you get for playing with people's hearts!"You're nothing but a selfish piece of trash. And look at you now: your husband's gone, your body's falling apart, and your father-in-law's dead because of you. You're going to end up alone, for the rest of your life!"Lily's head snapped up. Her bloodshot eyes held nothing but a cold, dead calm. She rose slowly off the floor and walked, step by step, toward Josh, who was still laughing like a madman."What do I get?"She repeated the words softly, the corner of her mouth curling into something that made his blood run cold."If it's payback we're talking about, then let's make sure no one gets to walk away from this."The killing intent in her eyes stopped Josh's laughter cold. He flinched back on instinct. "You... what are you going to do? Murder is a crime!""Kill you?" Lily looked down at him. "That would be letting you

Lily froze, most of the drunkenness burning off her at once."What divorce certificate? Dad, don't joke with me.""Who's joking?" Raymond glared at her, disgusted. "It's sitting right there on the coffee table at home. How big does the folder have to be before you notice it?"Her mind went blank. Last time she'd been home, she'd been too busy fuming over Neil ignoring her to notice anything on that table at all."That's not possible... it can't be..."She muttered it under her breath, then shoved the model beside her aside and bolted for her car parked at the curb."Lily! Where are you going?" The model grabbed at her sleeve."Get off me!"She wrenched her arm free, hands shaking as she started the engine, and floored it, running every red light the whole way home. She threw the door open and there it was, the very first thing she saw: the divorce certificate lying on the coffee table. The room spun.Lily raced back to the family estate like a woman out of her mind and found

  • Falling Away from You   Chapter 7

Raymond was as good as his word. Men cornered Josh in an alley and beat him savagely, snapping the bone in his left arm.The news reached me while I sat on a train, on my way to my father's hometown. They told me Lily had rushed to the hospital like a woman possessed, guarding Josh with that same fierce devotion she'd once shown me, years ago. For weeks, she barely left his bedside, too consumed to even go home. So by the time I had fully vanished, and the dust had settled over our empty house, she never noticed at all.At first, I imagine the freedom felt refreshing to her. Without my constant restraint, without that perpetually wounded face of mine hanging around, the air itself must have tasted sweeter. But little by little, I knew she'd start to miss me. And sure enough, the novelty with Josh began to wear off.During those weeks at his bedside, they ended up in bed together—as these things tend to go. Josh's young body and his skill between the sheets gave her a thrill she'd

"Neil, what gives you the standing to bargain with me?""The standing of being Lily's lawful husband." My voice was flat. "If I don't get a divorce, I'll make a scene at the company every day. I'll go crying to the press. I'll grind the Marshall name into the dirt."I stared him down, my eyes full of resolve. "If you want this divorce, you don't have a choice."His expression darkened completely. He said nothing for a long time. Then, finally, he gave in."Fine. Josh's background is beneath us. He was never good enough for this family to begin with.

  • Falling Away from You   Chapter 5

The resuscitation effort lasted two full hours.I sat collapsed on the cold hallway floor, shaking without control. The old, familiar dread of being abandoned by the entire world came crashing back.I thought of my mother, the gambler, of the rainy night she'd walked out on Dad and me, only to die horribly under the wheels of a car. I thought of all those years Dad spent bleeding himself dry to pay off her staggering debts, dragging me through one hard, grinding day after another just to survive.I pressed my hands together and prayed, tears striking the backs of my knuckles.'Please. Don't take Dad from me. I already have nothing left. Don't take him too.'But heaven never listens to the prayers of the unlucky. The doctor came out, shaking his head with genuine regret."I'm sorry. We did everything we could." He hesitated, then added, "His condition had been stable. Something must have caused a severe shock, and it triggered cardiac arrest...""A shock?" My mind went blank f

Dad's spirits looked good that day. The doctor had said that if he kept his spirits up, he could live for years yet.He looked mildly confused when he saw me walk in alone. "Neil, where's Lily? Didn't you say you'd come together today?"I swallowed down the ache in my chest and forced a smile. "Something came up at the office. She got called back for a meeting. You know how it is, Dad, running a company that size keeps her slammed."He looked a little disappointed, but nodded anyway. "Putting the work first is a good thing. Lily's a good girl, and she cares about you. Try to be understanding with her."I turned away and let the tears fall silently.'I'm sorry, Dad. That's the last lie I'll ever tell you.'I spent the whole afternoon with him, then dragged my exhausted body back home.Lily was already there, sitting on the couch, her expression strained."Where were you? I looked all over the hospital for you."I looked at her and felt nothing but revulsion at how fake she was.
