The sirens were getting closer, but Vanessa was not the type of woman to go down without a fight.

"You think this is over?" she asked, her voice dropping to something cold and dangerous. "You think a few police cars are going to fix everything?"

Alex stepped closer to where Miguel and I were standing. "Vanessa, just put the gun down. Whatever you have done, whatever you are planning, it does not have to end like this."

"Does it not?" She backed toward the French doors leading to the garden, keeping the gun trained on all three of us. "Alex, darling, do you really think I have spent three years planning this just to give up because of a few sirens?"

"Three years?"

"Oh, sweetheart. This started long before you even met Emily. This started the day I realized that Alexander Reed was exactly the kind of man who could give me the life I deserved."

I had maybe thirty seconds before Vanessa walked through that front door and found Miguel inside with Alex. Thirty seconds to figure out how to save the man I loved from a woman who had already threatened to kill us all.The back garden was exactly as I remembered it - overgrown roses, stone pathway, that old trellis we had climbed down the night before. I could see lights on in Alex's study through the French doors. He and Miguel were in there, probably having the conversation that could save Alex's life or get Miguel killed.I ran to the French doors and started banging on the glass.Through the window, I could see Alex and Miguel both turn toward the sound. Alex looked furious - probably thought I was some crazy ex-wife stalking him. Miguel looked terrified when he saw the panic on my face.I pressed my face to the glass and mouthed "VANESSA" as clearly as I could.Miguel got

Saturday morning came too fast and too slow at the same time. I had barely slept, tossing around while Miguel painted by the window. Every time I closed my eyes, I kept hearing Alex's voice in that hallway, talking about catching us in the act of something."You should eat something," Miguel said around seven, bringing me a cup of coffee and some toast."Not hungry.""Emily, you need to eat. We have to go see Detective Morrison in an hour, and you are going to pass out if you do not put something in your stomach."I forced down half the toast just to make him stop looking so worried. The estate planning documents were spread across our little table like evidence from a crime scene. Which, I guess, they were."What if he still does not believe us?" I asked."Then we figure out something else.""Like what?"Miguel sat d

Friday morning hit different. I rolled over, and Miguel was already up, standing by that tiny window with a paintbrush in his hand. Sunlight was streaming through the glass, and he had this look on his face—the one he got when he was completely lost in his work."Morning," I said, my voice still thick with sleep. He turned around and grinned at me. "Hey. Made some coffee if you want it."This whole thing still felt weird to me sometimes. Good weird. Having someone who remembered to make coffee, who was already up creating something beautiful while I was still figuring out what day it was. In my marriage with Alex, mornings were always rushed or silent. This felt... normal. Like how things should be."What are you working on?""You, actually. The way the light hits your face when you sleep. Been trying to get it right for weeks now."My face got hot. "Yo

The police station smelled like coffee, disinfectant, and the particular exhaustion that came from too many people dealing with too many problems under fluorescent lights.Detective Morrison was younger than I had expected from his voice on the phone, maybe early forties with graying temples and tired eyes that had probably seen more than their share of human cruelty."Mrs. Reed, Mr. Martinez," he said, gesturing for us to sit in chairs across from his desk. "Thank you for coming in so late."Miguel and I exchanged glances. He was using our assumed names, the ones we had been living under for weeks."Actually, Detective," Miguel said, "there are some things about our identities that you should know.""Oh?""My real name is Miguel Reed. Emily's real name is Emily Reed. We have been using false names for safety reasons."Detective Morrison

The rain had been falling for three days straight, turning the city gray and washing away the last warmth of summer. I sat by the window of Miguel's small apartment, watching water stream down the glass while he painted at his easel near the opposite wall. Two weeks had passed since our disastrous meeting with Alex. Two weeks of trying to figure out our next move, of wondering if Sophia was still alive, of jumping every time the phone rang.Miguel had insisted I move in with him after Alex's threats. "You cannot stay at the motel," he had said. "If Alex is having you followed, if Vanessa knows where you are, then it is not safe."Mrs. Martinez had understood, though I could see the worry in her eyes when we packed my few belongings. Her daughter was out there somewhere, orchestrating chaos in all our lives, and there was nothing any of us could do to stop her."You are thinking too loud," Miguel said
