SEBASTIAN
I tapped the pen against the blue manilla folder as thoughts of the previous night threatened to get the best of me. Chloe’s panicked smile as she slid her hands into mine when the paparazzi had shown up was still in my mind. The fact that someone so smart was nervous about being seen with me puzzled me. How much had her ex hurt her, that she felt so lost?
"I wish you can simply open up and talk to me, Chloe," I whispered slightly to the quiet office.
But, I knew that was definitely not possible. She may have opened up a bit, but something told me that she didn’t trust me. I don’t know what to do to make her see that I wasn’t like her ex, and I was a better man than her ex.
Shaking my head lightly, I couldn’t help the smile that touched my lips. Gosh! I was really acting up these days.
My iPhone beeped, and I peered closely to it, realising that it was a message from Draco, telling me to call him. You would have to wait for a long time, man. I’m not in the mood to listen to your whining.
Just then, a knock sounded at the door.
"Come in," I said gruffly.
James dressed in simple black overalls walked into my office with a bunch of newspapers cradled in his hands. He looked flustered as he haggled them together so it wouldn’t slip on the floor.
"I believe that I told you that I don’t like messes," I said evenly.
He gulped. "I’m so sorry, sir. But, while I almost tripped and..."
I waved him off dismissively. "Just put it on the desk and leave," I grumbled.
He didn’t need to be told twice as he did as I said before walking out of the door as though he was running a race. James was my steadfast employee, but he always forgot himself most of the time.
Carefully, I pulled at my suit jacket, and grabbed one of the papers on the table. I and Chloe were right at the centre of the front page, and we were smiling at each other so wildly like it was a love marriage.
I pulled the newspaper even closer to my face as my phone buzzed. Without thinking, I slid the call button.
"Well, I never knew you as a man to have a marriage in the dead of the night?" Draco’s excited voice rang out.
I groaned as I placed the newspaper on the table. "Can’t a man be alone for five minutes without such shades?" I teased back.
"Nope!" He said childishly. I rolled my eyes. "I’m mad at you, man! This was the most important day of your life, and you couldn’t even call me in for the event. Nah, that is not done."
I shrugged. "I wasn’t planing it, ok? It just happened."
"Really?" He said with a voice laced in disbelief.
I sighed. "Yes, really..."
"Sebastian, people buy extra burgers when they don’t plan it. People sleep with their socks on when they don’t plan to. People don’t get married in the dead of the night. Which planet are you living in?"
"Earth," I supplied lamely.
"Stop trying to be a smart ass."
A reluctant smile tugged on my lips. This was the reason Draco was my best friend. He knew me a bit too much, and definitely understood when to insert the humour. I wouldn’t know what I would have done without him. But, I couldn’t let Chloe stay without being protected.
The world was cutthroat, and she needed to be safe from its sharp edges. It was my duty to protect her.
"Don’t zone out on me," Draco whined at the other end of the line.
I sighed. "I didn’t. But, you’re making up wild theories, it’s crazy."
"I haven’t started yet, Seb," he said easily. Then, there was a sound of shuffling papers. "Wait, did you get her pregnant?"
"Maybe..."
"You’re awfully tightlipped about this marriage. What is happening? It’s not like you, but..." More shuffling of paper. "This girl, they claim her name is Chloe . Is she the same girl you always talk about since forever?"
I groaned softly. "Good bye, Draco," I said evenly.
"You’re driving me off because I’m right. You naughty boy, you finally pegged her. Good luck with this marriage because you need it," he said happily.
I rolled my eyes once more as I disconnected the phone, placing it on my desk.
You have no idea how much I need that good luck. My parents weren’t’t going to understand my decision, and the only reason they weren’t blasting my phone was because they might still be dealing with the shock. I know fully well that the tales of my flash marriage was pasted everywhere for people to gloat and awe.
Fuck!
I don’t care though. I have always been called the black sheep of the family, so there is that. Chloe was the most important thing now.
I just need to keep her sheltered from everyone, including my family.
With a sigh, I leaned back on the chair, picking at the newspaper with the tip of my hand. Our image was clearer in this newspaper as we slid into the car, and I could see the way Chloe held onto my hand.
"There is nothing to fear when you’re with me, Chloe. I know pretty soon, you will realise this yourself," I whispered softly.
With a smile, I watched the images some more, before tossing it on the table. I had to work. I couldn’t bring myself to shift the newspapers, so I took the folder I had been using from underneath it, and placed it back on it as I skimmed though.
Time seemed to pass when suddenly, a knock sounded at the door.
"Who is it?" I asked calmly.
"It’s Chloe, sir," she said softly.
"I believe that’s my wife?"
There was a pause, and I heard a soft, "Yes," that made me smile softly.
She was just too cute.
CHLOEThis was right.I should be glad that Sebastian was taking me to his family. Ok, I’m not going to keep bullshitting myself. I was not happy. The way that he had acted throughout. Wait, that was on me. I was the one who should be more mature about this and appreciative that he was actually doing his best to make me feel better. I was not his responsibility. I had to remember this."Come in," a timid voice called out.I turned to look at Sebastian, but he wasn’t looking at me as we stepped into the house. The maid who had led us in, bowed as she walked away. I was about to move to the couch when he placed a hand on my arm, stopping me.My eyes sought his in question. "Is there something wrong?""No, Chloe," he said softly. "I just want to say that this... I know you said that you can handle things your own. I’m not bringing you here to make things difficult and I’m sorry for how I spoke to you this morning. It’s just I’ve been stressed. I would do better."I nodded. "I’m sorry, to
CHLOEHis hands softly caressed my back, as he swayed me on my feet. Sebastian’s blue eyes bored into mine, and it was a miracle that I didn’t get lost in him. This was the first time I was dancing with a man like this, with the light dim, and people looking at us. "Enchanting," he whispered against my cheeks.I closed eyes, as he lifted me off the ground, and I swayed, my fingers biting into his shoulders. When I opened my eyes, he was looking at me with such an intensity that burned me all over. It made me think of the best time, and I never wanted it to end. But, the music suddenly stopped. Softly, he placed me on the floor, and my eyes caught Nathan looking at us, my cheeks flamed red, and unable to meet Sebastian’s gaze, I said, "Please, I need to leave," I whispered."Why? The party just started, Chloe," he pointed out.I slid a stray curl behind my ear. "I just want to leave this place, please. I can’t stay here anymore."His hands touched my arm softly, and he softly led us d
CHLOEHis green eyes were cold as they looked at me, and I swallowed the lump in my throat. I tried to take a step back, but there was nowhere to go, and I could only dig my hand into the shelf."Why are you here, Nathan?" I asked slowly. His cold eyes zeroed in on me. "What do you think?"I think you are full of crap, and you ruined my life, but I won’t let you ruin my night. That should be what I should tell the bastard, but I was too uptight and scared. I had to get out of here for my own sanity. I couldn’t be with someone who caused me so much pain. It wasn’t right. I had to flee.My legs moved, catching the thoughts of my brain, but I couldn’t go far, as Nathan’s hand gripped my arm like a vice, pulling me to a stop. Oh, God! Why did I have to come to this place on my own? I should have looked for Sebastian instead."I’m not done talking, Chloe," he said icily. And, just like that, he swung me backward, causing my back to hit the wash table with a thud. I swallowed my groan of pai
CHLOEI looked at Sebastian anxiously, hating that I was the reason he was forced to tolerate his mother’s rudeness. I should have kept my feelings in check, and not try to compare him with Nathan at every chance I got. Now, I was the one paying for the price. To my amazement, he pulled me closer to himself, and glared right at his mother. "If Chloe is not allowed to be here, then, I see no reason why I should stay here.""What are you saying?" She hissed in frustration. "You know that was not what I meant."The soft tap of Sebastian’s hand against my hip, caused me to look at his clean face. "My love, shall we go in?" He asked instead.I nodded softy, slightly disoriented that he would call me something so intimate. Sebastian sidestepped his mother, and walked right into the heart of the party. Some of these people I have seen them at work, but to be able to dine with them is the privilege that has not been given to me."They look so good together," one of the ladies chirped close to
CHLOE I have been standing in front of the black oak window for about thirty minutes, wondering if I should go down or not. My fingers softly interlocked together, and my jaw ticked the more I stared at my reflection. This was not... "Ma’am? Are you in there?" Mrs Craig queried. I swallowed the lump in my throat, as I took a deep breath. "I would be down soon," I managed in a voice that sounded like sandpaper. There was a pause. "Ok, I would tell the boss that, but he told me to inform you to come down in five minutes. He is anxious," she explained. "I would be there," I said more firmly. Why did I have to make Sebastian take me to this event? Nathan would be there, and only God knows what he would do. I shouldn’t have opened my big mouth, but what could I do now? Nothing! This was what I wanted and I can’t make Sebastian take back his word since he had called his mother that he would be there. The short time I spent with him, I have realised that he was a man that kept his wor
CHLOE"Wait," I heard my own voice, sounding so hurt.Since, Nathan’s betrayal, I didn’t think that something would hurt me like this. But, when Nathan had said that Sebastian didn’t invite me to the family party because he was embarrassed by me, something had shifted inside me, and no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t move past it.Sebastian turned, his hand sliding off the banister as he looked at me. "What is it Chloe?" He asked in that calm way of his.Normally, I would have felt an ease that came with his words, but not this time. Instead, it felt like there was an invisible noose around my neck that was restricting my breathing. I looked at him calmly as I said, "Can you explain why you didn’t tell me that you were invited to the event when you came home the other day?"He sighed. "Chloe...""Please, tell me the truth. I know you have said a lot about how this marriage doesn’t hurt you, and how you wish to protect me, but this is an event that means a lot to you. You sh
