SEBASTIAN
The door pulled open and Chloe steps in, looking pristine in her white pencil skirt and black turn-up shirt. My fingers caressed the edge of the pen as I stared at her. I have never seen someone so breathtakingly beautiful in my life. "Sir, these are the documents you asked for," she said softly as she placed thick manila folders on the table. I quickly sat up, rearranging my expression to a professional one. There was no need to frighten her off by showing my emotional side. I was doing all these for her alone. I calmly took the folders and breezed through it quickly. "The Ferry's has agreed to sign the contract?" "Yes, Sir," she divulged. "Actually, their spokesperson just called this morning. According to them, they wish to start working on the project by tomorrow." I nodded absently. "That is all right. You should handle the rest with the team." "As you say, Sir, " she mumbled. I placed the document back on the desk, only to realise she was still standing where she was. There was something up. Calmly, I met her gaze, and noticed how she chewed her lower lip as she looked at me. "Is there something wrong, Chloe?" She stopped biting her lips, to mutter, "Yes!" I rose my brow at her, but she shook her head instead. "I mean, no!" She said, sounding flustered. "What I mean to say is that..." she gestured to the desk. "You've seen the way the news of our...marriage has spread around thanks to the newspapers. It's all everyone is talking about." "And, you're worried about this." I stated. She held my eyes with hers, as she whispered, "Yes. " Chloe shuffled from one foot to the next and despite the AC, I saw a sheen of sweat on her forehead. I sighed lightly as I leaned back on the chair. "Sit down, Chloe," I said softly. She blinked. "But, Sir?" "Now..." For a moment, I thought that she would defile me but then, she pulled the leather seat out and sat down. I could visibly see a bit of her cleavage, and I quickly moved to her face, to avoid thinking of wanton things. "Why are you worried?" She stated at me in shock. "Come on...you can't possibly act like you don't know why." I shrugged. "I may have an idea, but I need to hear from you. Talk to me, please," I said softly. She took a shaky breath and placed a hand on the table. "I thought of a lot of things before saying yes, but now, I wish I didn't. Your family isn't going to like the fact you're married to me. They don't know the truth about our relationship, and that would make it worse on you. It's so selfish of me to keep this facade on, knowing how much it would cost you, and...I'm not worth it." I growled in rage as my hands closed against the hand she placed on the table. "What the fuck did you just say?" She shivered in fear. "Chloe, we talked about this, and I told you how fucking talented you are. You're my best employee and I'm not going to kick you to the wolves, ok? You're definitely worth everything." "How could you be so sure?" I squeezed her hand even more. "Look at me," I ordered. She timidly did that, and I could see her lashes were wet with tears that she refused to let fall. Damn the bastard that broke her confidence this much! "I'm Sebastian Willis and I never say what I don't mean," I said firmly. She nodded repeatedly. "You don't need to be worried about anything. You complement me and I wouldn't have asked for another woman, Chloe to be my wife. I will handle my family, all you have to do is relax. " I watched Chloe as she sniffed, trying to calm her emotions down. There was nothing that I could do now, but hope that my actions proof to her that this marriage may be born out of convenience, but it wouldn't subdue her or make her feel less. I would always protect her. "Thank you, sir," she whispered as she rose to her feet, adjusting the skirt a bit. "I will take my leave now." I gave a curt nod as I watched her leave. It was going to be fine. The next few minutes, I spent time, making sure that the documents were in order, and thinking of the next thing to checkmate out of my list. My brother, Nathan saw me as a competition. He wanted me out of the way, and it was important to always be a step ahead of him. There was no telling what he was going to do to one-up Chloe. He hated her, and he must be riling in rage now that I had coveted her as mine. But, I don't care though. I will only do what I pleased when I want to. Suddenly, my phone buzzed. I peered at the phone, and realised that it was none other than my mom. I rolled my eyes, and kept working. But, my phone buzzed once more. It was literally my dad. This people don't know when to give it a fucking rest. They were just so nuts, but I was crazier. After treating me like crap for years, they want me to follow their rules which is never going to happen in this life! At 6 pm, I called it a day, picked up my black briefcase and then walked over to the reception. Chloe was just putting things into her bag. She turned almost immediately, her eyes wide in shock. "Sir?" I jerked my head towards the exit. "Are you done?" She snapped the bag shut, giving me a soft smile. "Yes!" "Let's go then," I said evenly. I waited for her to come close to me, and together, we made our way out of the office. I noticed the stares from the staffs, but I didn't care. The urge to pull Chloe closer was intense, but I shoved it down, not wishing to startle her. My black sedan slid through the curb, stopping right in front of us. But, that wasn't what got my attention. It was the range rover at the side which had my family logo on it. Mr Ethan, our family steward stood beside it, with black shades covering his eyes. "Chloe, you go on alone. I might be home late " I mumbled easily. I tapped her on the arm once, before moving towards Mr Ethan. I guess there was no way to escape my family today. I glared at him as he bowed to the ground. "Let's get this over with, okay?"CHLOEThis was right.I should be glad that Sebastian was taking me to his family. Ok, I’m not going to keep bullshitting myself. I was not happy. The way that he had acted throughout. Wait, that was on me. I was the one who should be more mature about this and appreciative that he was actually doing his best to make me feel better. I was not his responsibility. I had to remember this."Come in," a timid voice called out.I turned to look at Sebastian, but he wasn’t looking at me as we stepped into the house. The maid who had led us in, bowed as she walked away. I was about to move to the couch when he placed a hand on my arm, stopping me.My eyes sought his in question. "Is there something wrong?""No, Chloe," he said softly. "I just want to say that this... I know you said that you can handle things your own. I’m not bringing you here to make things difficult and I’m sorry for how I spoke to you this morning. It’s just I’ve been stressed. I would do better."I nodded. "I’m sorry, to
CHLOEHis hands softly caressed my back, as he swayed me on my feet. Sebastian’s blue eyes bored into mine, and it was a miracle that I didn’t get lost in him. This was the first time I was dancing with a man like this, with the light dim, and people looking at us. "Enchanting," he whispered against my cheeks.I closed eyes, as he lifted me off the ground, and I swayed, my fingers biting into his shoulders. When I opened my eyes, he was looking at me with such an intensity that burned me all over. It made me think of the best time, and I never wanted it to end. But, the music suddenly stopped. Softly, he placed me on the floor, and my eyes caught Nathan looking at us, my cheeks flamed red, and unable to meet Sebastian’s gaze, I said, "Please, I need to leave," I whispered."Why? The party just started, Chloe," he pointed out.I slid a stray curl behind my ear. "I just want to leave this place, please. I can’t stay here anymore."His hands touched my arm softly, and he softly led us d
CHLOEHis green eyes were cold as they looked at me, and I swallowed the lump in my throat. I tried to take a step back, but there was nowhere to go, and I could only dig my hand into the shelf."Why are you here, Nathan?" I asked slowly. His cold eyes zeroed in on me. "What do you think?"I think you are full of crap, and you ruined my life, but I won’t let you ruin my night. That should be what I should tell the bastard, but I was too uptight and scared. I had to get out of here for my own sanity. I couldn’t be with someone who caused me so much pain. It wasn’t right. I had to flee.My legs moved, catching the thoughts of my brain, but I couldn’t go far, as Nathan’s hand gripped my arm like a vice, pulling me to a stop. Oh, God! Why did I have to come to this place on my own? I should have looked for Sebastian instead."I’m not done talking, Chloe," he said icily. And, just like that, he swung me backward, causing my back to hit the wash table with a thud. I swallowed my groan of pai
CHLOEI looked at Sebastian anxiously, hating that I was the reason he was forced to tolerate his mother’s rudeness. I should have kept my feelings in check, and not try to compare him with Nathan at every chance I got. Now, I was the one paying for the price. To my amazement, he pulled me closer to himself, and glared right at his mother. "If Chloe is not allowed to be here, then, I see no reason why I should stay here.""What are you saying?" She hissed in frustration. "You know that was not what I meant."The soft tap of Sebastian’s hand against my hip, caused me to look at his clean face. "My love, shall we go in?" He asked instead.I nodded softy, slightly disoriented that he would call me something so intimate. Sebastian sidestepped his mother, and walked right into the heart of the party. Some of these people I have seen them at work, but to be able to dine with them is the privilege that has not been given to me."They look so good together," one of the ladies chirped close to
CHLOE I have been standing in front of the black oak window for about thirty minutes, wondering if I should go down or not. My fingers softly interlocked together, and my jaw ticked the more I stared at my reflection. This was not... "Ma’am? Are you in there?" Mrs Craig queried. I swallowed the lump in my throat, as I took a deep breath. "I would be down soon," I managed in a voice that sounded like sandpaper. There was a pause. "Ok, I would tell the boss that, but he told me to inform you to come down in five minutes. He is anxious," she explained. "I would be there," I said more firmly. Why did I have to make Sebastian take me to this event? Nathan would be there, and only God knows what he would do. I shouldn’t have opened my big mouth, but what could I do now? Nothing! This was what I wanted and I can’t make Sebastian take back his word since he had called his mother that he would be there. The short time I spent with him, I have realised that he was a man that kept his wor
CHLOE"Wait," I heard my own voice, sounding so hurt.Since, Nathan’s betrayal, I didn’t think that something would hurt me like this. But, when Nathan had said that Sebastian didn’t invite me to the family party because he was embarrassed by me, something had shifted inside me, and no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t move past it.Sebastian turned, his hand sliding off the banister as he looked at me. "What is it Chloe?" He asked in that calm way of his.Normally, I would have felt an ease that came with his words, but not this time. Instead, it felt like there was an invisible noose around my neck that was restricting my breathing. I looked at him calmly as I said, "Can you explain why you didn’t tell me that you were invited to the event when you came home the other day?"He sighed. "Chloe...""Please, tell me the truth. I know you have said a lot about how this marriage doesn’t hurt you, and how you wish to protect me, but this is an event that means a lot to you. You sh
