I could be anyone. I could be anyone. I could be anyone.

That mantra has been running on repeat in my head. And now I was standing in the middle of the suite Jackson had booked for us.

I was standing right in the middle, in another country, and I couldn't fucking believe it. Jackson had taken care of everything like he’d promised he would. I had lied to my father and Lilian that I was going on a road trip with my new friend—well, that wasn't exactly a lie, and the café already found a temporary replacement.

And I was in a five-star hotel in Vancouver. I felt like I was going to throw up from nerves. I sat at the edge of the bed, my hands folded in my lap, and waited.

I needed Jackson to be here so I could know it was real. Till then, I didn't know what to do with myself.

He had wanted us to travel together, our seats next to each other in the plane, but I glared at him and refused. People still didn't know we knew each other, or we were… stepsiblings. I wanted it to remain that way, not for me, but for him. If we traveled together, his teammate would see us together. And since men gossiped more than women, by the time the school break was over, everybody would have known.

So I waited, my sweaty palms pressed together. I didn't move for an hour, and finally, I heard the door open. I was on my feet in an instant.

“Shit, how do–”

“Is this really happening?” I asked, cutting Jackson off as I literally jumped in front of his face. He pushed his sunglasses up into his hair so I could see him raise an eyebrow.

“What?”

I was panting, my eyes wide, and I knew I looked wild. “Am I… am I really in another country?”

Jackson gave me a look like I've lost my mind. “Check your map, darling, and confirm that yourself.”

I huffed. “Prick,” I muttered under my breath, about to turn, but then I paused. I turned back to him very slowly, really looking at him.

As usual, he was dressed in all black, but today, it was a really different style. He wore straight black pants instead of jeans. He wore a black button-up shirt that was open at the top, exposing his wide chest. He threw on a black coat that stopped below his knees. He sealed it all with black Italian loafers. Loafers, I say!

“You…” I swallowed because I suddenly felt that urge that hasn't gone away since that day at the bar.

It has only grown, and we haven't been this close since that day. I looked back at his eyes and saw he was already watching me with that intense look, his hair pushed away from his face, making his features appear sharp.

“You look…” Good. “... like a proper Englishman.”

He slowly raised an eyebrow. “Did you ever, for once, doubt my origin?"

I hummed. “Now and then.”

He huffed as he rolled his luggage in, shutting the door.

“Welcome to Vancouver, Siri,” he said with a dramatic sweep of his hands over the room.

That excitement returned, and I was partially bouncing on my feet. “When do we begin the tour?”

He put his sunglasses back on like he wasn't indoors. “Right now. You’re the tourist. Pick somewhere.”

I stared at him. “I have never been a tourist.”

He hummed, pressing his lips together as he nodded.

I gave him a look. “You have this look on.”

He looked at me through his sunglasses. “What look?”

“The look that says you’re about to make it your personal mission to show me the entire country.”

“You damn bloody right I am. Get dressed.”

And so I was bundled into a coat, and the tour began.

The first stop was the seawall, surrounded by mountains and waters. Everything was different: the people, the currency. Everything!

And it was so goddamn exciting.

As we walked, surrounded by hundreds of people, nobody stopped to stare at me, nobody whispered, and no one person knew my history. I stopped walking.

Jackson stopped as well and turned back to me. “Siri?”

I stared at the people walking past us, and not a single glance came my way.

“Nobody knows me,” I whispered. I looked back at Jackson and his tight eyebrows. “Here. Nobody knows who I am.”

His expression softened. “Yeah. Nobody does.”

I smiled and started walking again. We moved to a much busier part next, where there were different food stalls and shops with things that lured me in, and I tried different things: food, drinks. And trust that I didn't miss out on the alcohol.

I released a breath as I took a little sip from the bottle of liquor, and then I heard the shutter of a camera. My head snapped to Jackson.

“Delete that,” I snarled.

“No.”

“Jackson.”

“Siri.”

“I look horrible!”

He stared down at the phone screen, then looked back at me. “No, you don't."

I looked away.

It was almost six, and so we were making our way back to the hotel. We crossed the street when Jackson held my hand like it was the most normal thing in the world. I stared down at our joined hands, our interlocked fingers.

Something tightened in my chest. I ripped my hand away before it could tighten further. Jackson looked back at me with an eyebrow raised.

“What was that?”

I stared ahead, shoving my hands into my coat pockets. “What?”

“You just ripped your hand away like mine caught on fire.”

“I was hot.”

He stared around at the freezing evening air, at my breath clouding in front of me. He looked away.

“Right…”

There was a tone in his voice, a tone that was different from his usual bright tone. We walked back to the hotel without a word, and as soon as we got into the room, Jackson changed and made his way out.

“I’m going to practice," he said, and he was gone.

I sighed as I dropped down on the bed like a starfish, staring up at the expensive ceiling.

That was… awkward. There has never been an awkward moment between us until now. A thought flew into my head, and I sat up quickly, my eyes wide as I stared at nothing.

We… We were going to share a bed tonight!

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Today's Joy. Tomorrow's Pain

Yeah, fuck Toria and her stupid advice. Fuck that happy ending nonsense. Sure, I do want a happy ending with him. I want a happy beginning, middle, and ending with Jackson. All of that and more! Damn it, I had even been thinking of the perfect future together with him. Yes—and fuck you—I’ve been thinking of going somewhere with him, getting a house, three dogs, and maybe one cat. We could live like that for a few years, then get married, and decide if we wanted kids. I'd already mapped out the perfect future, the perfect ending. So yeah… Use him? USE him? How on God’s green earth can I use him when I was in love with him? I was madly in love with that man, and it made me realize that I was never in love with Michael. No. No, I was just in love with the attention and the idea of love, the idea that someone finally wants me. But this painful shit with Jackson? This soul-crashing devastation? Yeah, this was love. This was love in its purest, fucked up form.So how was I going to us

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Stay And Use

“I thought you might be gone already,” Toria said as we settled into my hotel room. “Jackson already booked my flight,” I said, opening a beer. “I leave in two days.”“Hmm. So what are you going to do till then? Stay cranked up in here?”“Probably.”“I could show you around, you know.”I thought about it for a second and shook my head, sipping my drink. “Thank you, but no.”I had thought about leaving and just going to tour on my own, but every time I thought about the possibility that I might run into him out there, I shook off that thought. Maybe I would have seen him with his hand around another woman’s waist, laughing with the boys and acting like that night didn't happen. But seeing him on screen tonight, I don't think any of that might have happened. I wanted to ask Toria what happened and why he looked that way, but then I might sound like I care, which I very much do, and I wanted to stay cool and keep up this nonchalant act until I was out of here. And so I sipped my drink

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Play The Fool Again

SIRIHe… lost. I stared at the TV screen in my small hotel room, my eyes wide, hands squeezed together and pressed to my chest.“He lost,” I whispered it out loud like it would make sense if I did so. I told myself I wasn't going to watch the game, that I would stay away from my screen and just wait for my flight back home two days from now, but I couldn't. I couldn't let the chance of seeing him, even though it was from a screen, slip away. As soon as his team had skated onto the ice and the camera zoomed in on them, my eyes had found him immediately, and I knew something was wrong. His skin was too pale, his eyes looked too sunken, and he kept flexing his wrists over and over, to the point I was sure everyone in the arena must have noticed. And I could have sworn that he was trembling. The game started, and it was even worse. Everything about the way he moved, to the way he could no longer hide his trembling, was wrong. It filled my heart with dread and panic. I couldn't relax a

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Repented And Born Again

PRESENTThe smoke of that cigar, laced with a chocolate scent, burned into my nose even though he was across the street. The scent was the same: the cigar lit, resting on his lips, lifted in a smile. A small smile, soft and gentle. Not like that frightening smile he had on his face that night that still sends a chill down my spine. Elijah M’Call still looked the same even seven years later. His black hair was slicked back from his face, dotted with gray. His grey eyes were wrinkled at the corners from age. His shoulders were still broad beneath his tailored suit, and black leather gloves covered his hands. He still looked and dressed the same. Nothing had changed. After that night, I had cut every tie with this man. I made sure I never heard a word from him or received a single penny. I moved into Jacob’s house, and his mother accepted me without a single complaint, letting me stay until I could rent my own place. I didn't speak to my mother for two years after that. She came to my

CONTENT WARNING: This chapter contains references to domestic abuse and may be triggering to some readers. Reader discretion is advised. ~.~“I can think of a few things that can make you quit hockey,” my father said, his voice relaxed, but his face was filled with hell. He stood chest to chest with me, and I fought every instinct screaming at me to lower my eyes, to pull back. I fought them and stood perfectly still, not letting that dark look intimidate me.“What?” I spat. “Are you going to pay the coach to kick me out of the team? Then I'll just find another team to join.”“Jackson, please,” my mother whispered, and that just made my fists clench harder. Why was she calling me back and not her husband? He was the one threatening to take my dream away from me! My hopes for a better future, and still I was the one being called back? Did she really think I would just roll over and accept this bullshit? Bloody no. “That is way beneath me, Jackson,” he said in a low voice, acting li

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Just A Little More

SEVEN YEARS AGOThe sun had long since set, and the neighborhood was dark by the time I strolled in through the back door, my shoes tied together by their laces and hanging around my neck, my hands shoved into my pockets. Hopefully my parents were asleep by now, and I wouldn't have to deal with either of them. It was exhausting to look into their eyes these days and act like everything was fine when I harbored a little bit of hatred for my father. Okay, maybe it was more than a little bit, but I won’t tell if you don’t. I spent time at Jacob’s house long after practice, then came home and lied through my teeth, saying the coach sucked us dry with practice, which is why I was so late. You can’t blame me. The atmosphere in this house was depressing, and hearing my father whistle while he smoked his cigar, acting like all was right and fair in the world, was pissing me off when I could see my mother was losing weight, when I could clearly see she was losing her shine. She just needed
