Seeing Each Other More

My mind flashed back to the tree, me caging him in, and then the roles being reversed.

His deep, raspy voice.

His scent.

Me asking him to touch me.

His rejection.

Lililan’s son. My supposed stepbrother.

I stared, and stared, and then did some more staring. But the image sitting in front of me, back straight and long legs crossed, didn't fade away. So it’s… real?

My father cleared his throat, and that's when I noticed the tense, awkward air in the living room.

“Don’t be mannerless, Siri,” he said, glancing at me in that way of his that always signifies a warning. To an outsider, it might seem like a harmless look. “Stop staring and greet your brother.”

A jolt went through my brain. Brother? BROTHER?

I flirted with my brother last night.

I asked my brother to touch me.

I called my brother ‘daddy.’

Somebody kill me.

But first… manners. I cleared my throat, my mouth opening, but he beat me to it.

“Hello, Siri,” he said in a low voice that almost sounded like a purr, and I bit down on my tongue so hard that I tasted blood.

Hello, yourself! But I was a girl with manners, so I smiled.

“Hello, Jackson. It’s really lovely to meet you.”

He cocked his head, and I swear there was amusement dancing in those grey eyes. “Is it?”

“No!” my brain screamed. “Yes,” my mouth said.

Was this the same man I had pinned against the tree last night? But then… that almost smile appeared, and that was when I knew it was truly him.

“There was a delay in his flight yesterday,” Lilian said, breaking the silence that settled. She held his bicep, looking up at him with so much… love. A look I've never seen directed at me in my life. “That’s why he couldn't make it.”

He took her hand and placed a soft kiss on it, reciprocating that look of love, and I suddenly didn't want to be standing there. “I apologize again.”

“Well, Jackson, it was a pleasure to meet you,” I said, clearing my throat when my voice came out too thick. “Welcome to the family. I shall be upstairs if any of you need me.”

That was Siri’s way of saying, “Don’t need me. I’m going to ignore everybody.”

I rushed back upstairs before anybody could speak to me, closing my door and resting my back on it. I looked out the window, at the clear sky and the wind that carried the scent of winter, and I thought, “Somewhere out there is a chuddy girl who was loved by her family and doesn't have a man like my father as theirs.”

I thought: “How lucky she was.”

~.~

An hour later, a soft knock came at my door that I tried to ignore, but the person was persistent and kept knocking until I stood up with a groan and ripped the door open.

“I didn't mean–”

The rest of my words never made it out as I stared at the tall figure standing in front of my door with his hands crossed behind his back.

“Mind if I come in?”

“I do mind.”

He came in anyway. I closed the door and turned to him. He stood in the center of my room, looking too… large for this space. And those eyes were fixed on me.

“What do you want?” I asked.

He hummed. “I’ve decided I like you better drunk.”

Was this really the same man I met last night? And now I know why I found his accent familiar: Lilian had the same accent. That little trace of a British accent.

“And I’ve decided I don't give a fuck,” I spat.

He may be ridiculously good-looking, and certainly too hot for his own good, but now that I've realized he was my stepbrother, I had to draw a line. And that wasn't the only reason.

Now that there wasn't any alcohol whispering nonsense to my brain, I could think properly, and my old fear returned.

Amusement danced in his eyes.

He took a step forward, and his long legs brought him close to me. Too close.

“Is that regret, Siri?” he asked in a low voice that I refused to acknowledge the things it was doing to me. “Or are those walls building up in your eyes?”

I tried to keep my back straight. “Both.”

“I thought after last night, we would become inseparable.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

He raised an eyebrow. “Tell you what?”

“That you were my stepbrother, damn it!”

He took another step closer to me, and I took one back. My back hit the door.

“You didn't give me a chance to,” he answered, his voice low.

I hated how breathless my voice became. “You had plenty of chances.”

Another step, and he was so close that I could feel the heat radiating from his body, and his scent slammed into me with a force I should find offensive, but unsurprisingly, I didn’t.

When he spoke, I could smell the mint on his breath: that is how close he was to me.

“Did I?” he asked in that deep voice that I didn't like–liar. “Tell me when I had the chance to, Siri? Was it when you had me cornered, pinned against the tree?” He picked up a strand of my hair that had escaped from my braid, and I held back a shiver when his knuckles grazed my collarbone. “Or was it when you were asking me to touch you?”

My cheeks heated. “S-shut up.”

“You don't want me to.”

No, I didn't, but I would cut off my tongue before I admitted that.

“Siri,” he whispered, and heat pooled in my lower stomach. He brought his face an inch closer to mine, his eyes dark and intense. “Siri.” Another inch, and I felt his next words leave a mark on my lips. “You’re interesting.”

My eyebrows pulled tight. “Me?”

His eyes dropped to my lips, and his even breath changed for a second before he looked back at my eyes. “Yes, darling.”

That damn word again.

“H-how?” I asked, hating how my voice shook. Even more, I hated how I sounded… desperate.

He played with the strand of my hair between his fingers. He dropped it, and once again, his knuckles brushed against my collarbone. And this time, it lingered. He opened his mouth to speak, but Lilian’s voice cut him off as she called out.

“Kids, come down for breakfast!”

“Got it!” I yelled back, hoping they didn't hear the shake in my voice.

Jackson took a step back, and I released a breath I didn't know I was holding.

“Do you mind?” he asked with an eyebrow raised.

I frowned. “What?”

“The door, Siri.”

My cheeks heated. “O-oh.”

I stepped aside. He opened the door, but then paused with his hand on the doorknob. He turned to me, and that almost smile turned into a smirk. A smirk that made my knees tremble.

“We’ll be seeing more of each other, Siri.”

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Play The Fool Again

SIRIHe… lost. I stared at the TV screen in my small hotel room, my eyes wide, hands squeezed together and pressed to my chest.“He lost,” I whispered it out loud like it would make sense if I did so. I told myself I wasn't going to watch the game, that I would stay away from my screen and just wait for my flight back home two days from now, but I couldn't. I couldn't let the chance of seeing him, even though it was from a screen, slip away. As soon as his team had skated onto the ice and the camera zoomed in on them, my eyes had found him immediately, and I knew something was wrong. His skin was too pale, his eyes looked too sunken, and he kept flexing his wrists over and over, to the point I was sure everyone in the arena must have noticed. And I could have sworn that he was trembling. The game started, and it was even worse. Everything about the way he moved, to the way he could no longer hide his trembling, was wrong. It filled my heart with dread and panic. I couldn't relax a

PRESENTThe smoke of that cigar, laced with a chocolate scent, burned into my nose even though he was across the street. The scent was the same: the cigar lit, resting on his lips, lifted in a smile. A small smile, soft and gentle. Not like that frightening smile he had on his face that night that still sends a chill down my spine. Elijah M’Call still looked the same even seven years later. His black hair was slicked back from his face, dotted with gray. His grey eyes were wrinkled at the corners from age. His shoulders were still broad beneath his tailored suit, and black leather gloves covered his hands. He still looked and dressed the same. Nothing had changed. After that night, I had cut every tie with this man. I made sure I never heard a word from him or received a single penny. I moved into Jacob’s house, and his mother accepted me without a single complaint, letting me stay until I could rent my own place. I didn't speak to my mother for two years after that. She came to my

CONTENT WARNING: This chapter contains references to domestic abuse and may be triggering to some readers. Reader discretion is advised. ~.~“I can think of a few things that can make you quit hockey,” my father said, his voice relaxed, but his face was filled with hell. He stood chest to chest with me, and I fought every instinct screaming at me to lower my eyes, to pull back. I fought them and stood perfectly still, not letting that dark look intimidate me.“What?” I spat. “Are you going to pay the coach to kick me out of the team? Then I'll just find another team to join.”“Jackson, please,” my mother whispered, and that just made my fists clench harder. Why was she calling me back and not her husband? He was the one threatening to take my dream away from me! My hopes for a better future, and still I was the one being called back? Did she really think I would just roll over and accept this bullshit? Bloody no. “That is way beneath me, Jackson,” he said in a low voice, acting li

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Just A Little More

SEVEN YEARS AGOThe sun had long since set, and the neighborhood was dark by the time I strolled in through the back door, my shoes tied together by their laces and hanging around my neck, my hands shoved into my pockets. Hopefully my parents were asleep by now, and I wouldn't have to deal with either of them. It was exhausting to look into their eyes these days and act like everything was fine when I harbored a little bit of hatred for my father. Okay, maybe it was more than a little bit, but I won’t tell if you don’t. I spent time at Jacob’s house long after practice, then came home and lied through my teeth, saying the coach sucked us dry with practice, which is why I was so late. You can’t blame me. The atmosphere in this house was depressing, and hearing my father whistle while he smoked his cigar, acting like all was right and fair in the world, was pissing me off when I could see my mother was losing weight, when I could clearly see she was losing her shine. She just needed

“You good, mate?” Jacob asked as he sat beside me and handed me a cup of hot chocolate. I took it without a word, cupping my hands around the mug and staring at the steam. He said nothing for a while, just drank his beverage, and then said, “The game is tomorrow, you know.”My shoulders stiffened. I heaved a sigh, sipping the hot drink, but I barely tasted anything. “Yeah,” I said, my voice scratchy from lack of use. “You haven't slept, haven't eaten anything. How are you going to play like this? Don’t expect us to go easy on you because you were our captain.” He said it as a joke, nudging my shoulder with his, but I remained silent, unmoving. He sighed deeply, placing his mug down and turning to face me. “Listen here, mate: it’s not your fault. It’s neither of your faults. You both have a shitty past, and she’s been hurt, yeah, but have you ever done anything to hurt her?” He didn't wait for an answer he wasn't going to get and just went on. “Sure, you were a fuckboy just three

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Hands Made Of Feathers

JACKSONI haven't moved for an hour or two. It might be three. I don’t bloody know. I sat on the bench by the bar, my eyes fixed on the glass of liquor in front of me. A glass I haven't touched since it was placed in front of me. Usually, I would have downed the drink just to try to numb these painful feelings in my chest. But no. No, I wanted to feel them all. I wanted them to burn. I wanted them to hurt. Jacob has been sitting beside me since the-however-long hours I've been here, but he hasn't said a word, just nursing his drink. I wish he would say something. I wish he would call me a bastard or a fool. Why? I didn’t know. I just needed something to hurt. I needed it to hurt even more. He suddenly shifted beside me, going tense. “What the bloody fuck do you want, Toria? Here to push the knife in deeper?”“Calm down, J. I just need to talk to him.”“Well, he doesn't want to talk to ya. Piss off.”“Did you love her?” she asked anyway, and Jacob was already shaking with anger, wh
