Emma's POV
“What was that, mom?!” I asked as soon as I walked in. I was a little surprised to see that she was at home. I mean, what if I was bringing my non-existent boyfriend home for some quick after school make out sesh? “Sit down, baby.” I had mixed feelings about her calling me baby. Sometimes, it made me feel like the center of her world which I was, other days, it just made me feel small, like it did now. “Trust me, I was going to.” I almost passed out in the morning, I'm not trying to again. “You don't have to sound that way, Emma.” At least she called my name. That was also a good and bad thing. She only used my name when there was something serious to say. “I'm all ears mom.” I replied to her, sitting and crossing my legs at whatever manner of travesty was about to present itself again. I couldn't also wait to get back to fantasizing about him, Kevin… He'd break the news to you. Before I had the time to ask who ‘he’ was, a tall handsome man walked out of my mom's room. His height and build was really frightening. What made it worse was that he really was a good looking man, and he was flashing his very fine set of teeth. “Hey Emma, you don't have to be hard on your mom. I'm Mark. Then I saw that snake tattoo I caught on the video call earlier. I almost choked as he extended his hands. The thought of what those hands were doing earlier this morning did not make taking them less revolting. I shook him regardless. My mom sat smiling like a puppy at the owner, his hands were quite soft for a man's, which was a good thing. I didn't want my mom in hard hands, literally and figuratively. “You probably know I'm Emma, her world.” I don't know where that came from, but I saw a little frown creep on my mom's face. I didn't care. “Now that's a beautiful thing.” Mark said. I wish he played into it and said something stupid. I really wanted to do something to make him feel stupid and come off his high horse. He really must have felt like he was on a row, controlling using our own house. I hated how docile my mom was around him. He doesn't get to have me that way, he's not my… “Sit, Emma. You don't have to stand.” Mark said smiling. “I recognise those sneakers too. They look pretty on you.” He said winking. It was then I realized that when mom gave those shoes to me, it really was on behalf of someone else. I wished I could pull them off and throw them in his face, but it did not make sense to lose my expensive shoes to salvage my non-existent dignity. “Thank you.” I croaked. My unnecessary dislike for him wasn't going to let me seem like the stereotypical uncouth college girl. The crease in mom's brow straightened out. “I'd love to ask about many other things, but I see you can't wait for me to get to the point. You probably have a ton of buys to think about.” He joked. That almost made me blush, but I remembered I could not admit to it, and it was not “a ton of boys” It was just one. “Alright.” I said curtly, I like how I sounded mature. “I love your mom. We've been together for almost six months now, and I've decided I want to spend the rest of my life with her. She thinks the same too.” He said. I smiled at how fluent he was. “Is my mom your first?” I asked. My mom shifted in her seat. I sense she was becoming uncomfortable, but I had to. “No. I was married.” He answered gently, but my mom's hands were still rubbing his laps. It was so irritating to see. I hated that I felt that way, but I really couldn't help it. “Did you say the same thing to her folks?” I asked bluntly. “What do you mean?” I really wished Mark got annoyed, but he did not. I almost started to seem stupid. “That you've decided to spend the rest of your life, bla bla bla.” I replied. “Oh, yeah. I said so, I also did so. She got tired and said she couldn't do it anymore.” He replied. “Mark, you don't…” Mom started speaking, but he cut her when he put her head on his shoulder. I was now the enemy. I really didn't want to know what my mom thought about me at that point. “I'm sorry. I just wanted to…” I started apologizing. I really didn't need to be that rude. “Oh no. Come on. You don't have to. You're only looking after your mom too. Wish I had something like that.” He said smiling. For the first time since our exchange, I smiled back. Mom was out at ease. I literally saw her melt into his hands. “You don't?” I asked. “I do. A boy, thinks himself a man. Safe to say he gives no hoot about his old man.” He did not look sad or sullen, just straight faced. “I reality don't know what to say, but I guess he'll come around.” I replied to him. “It's fine either way, Emma.” He said. “Am I welcome now? It's been really tiring having to eat with the love of my life and not being able to lock lips without looking over my shoulders.” The ‘joke’ was quite mature, but I understood him. And it made me laugh. “You are, anytime.” I said. “Just don't do anything I wouldn't do. “ I said. “Okay, miss.” I stopped at the store to pick something you might like. It's in the room. “Really?!” I like him already! “Y'all catch up and have fun, but not too much.” It's the last thing I said before hopping out of the living room.Emma's POV As soon as I finished checking out all the fancy things Mark got me, I settled to stalk Kevin. At least I now knew his name. I searched the name up on all my social media, but I was never really good at stalking things, so I couldn't find him. Plus there's a very huge chance he wasn't going to be using his real name. I searched Kayla, this time I was determined to find her. The occurrences for Kayla wasn't as much as that of Kevin, plus the ‘23’ she had written on her bag must definitely mean something. I added it to ‘Kayla’ in my search, and her name popped up. Apparently, she has done a bit of modeling. Her page looked so full and classy. They must be rich people. I searched all her followers and in no time, saw Kevin. I held my breath unconsciously before clicking on him. As soon as I did, I couldn't hold back. I looked at all he's ever posted, and all the ladies, especially. He seemed to roll with only cute model girls. I didn't think I stood a chance. The least I
Emma's POV “There's no way I'm making it out of the door.” I replied to him. I was heartbroken. If not for the fact that the stars never aligned in my favor, mom wasn't supposed to be off work. But Mark decided his sperm bladder couldn't hold on any longer. Ugh! Life sucked! “That's okay.” Kevin texted back. I felt bad for him, and for me. “We could make the best of here though.” He added, with a winking emoji. Now that was exciting. At least he wasn't giving up on me. “That's perfect. What do you say we do?” I was brimming with joy. I was really good at online games and riddles, so I did not have to worry about him trashing me at it. “I'd love to see more pictures.” I was surprised. That definitely wasn't what I was expecting. “Okay.” I replied. I was really still on the fence about it, but it was HIM, KEVIN! “...without clothes.” He added. My heart flip-flopped in my chest. I was excited and scared at the same time. “Why should I trust you?” I asked him.
Emma's POV “Hey.” Kevin texted, about an hour after they got in.My nerves calmed a bit. “What's up? How was today? Didn't see you much?” There were a million other questions I wanted to ask, but that could suffice for now. “It was a lot.” He replied. He was still typing, so I held my breath hoping he would explain the ‘a lot’ part. “Hey, it's Kayla.” I got another text. Now I was torn, and curious. Why was she texting me? “I stole your contact from Kevin.” She admitted. That was cool. I'd love to be friends with her if Kevin and I were ever going to amount to anything. “Hi Kayla. Didn't see you much today. What's up?” I replied to her. Kevin was still typing, there must be a whole lot he wanted to say. Why didn't he just call? I didn't want to send any text so I wouldn't interrupt his thought process, so I decided to wait it out. “There's something I think you should know.” Kayla said next. “What is it?” My heart was beating twice as fast as it normally did. “Kay
Emma's POV “What was that, Emma?” Mom demanded as soon as I walked in. “What are you talking about?” I asked her, weakly. She noticed I didn't come in with as much strength as I stormed down. “What's wrong, baby?” She asked again. “Everything.” I replied “What does that even mean?” She continued probing. I was walking to my room, ready to shut the door behind me, but she was hot on my tails. “I want to be alone.” I said. That never worked, I wasn't expecting it to. “Emma, I know a lot of things are wrong with us. And I promise to fix it as soon and as fast as I can, but please, please, what's wrong? I can't stand seeing you like this.” She was already tearing up. I hated myself more. I was her only child after my dad left us. I always promised myself that I wasn't going to cause her pain after I watched my dad walk out on us almost six years ago. Al she did was work her ass off, except the brief alcoholic phase, but all she had been to me was an angel. I can'
Kevin's POV I wasn't proud to tell anyone why Mom had moved us across the country. But it was supposed to be a fresh start. I promised I wasn't going to get entangled, which is also partly why we were attending a private school. A lot of the girls there were unlike what they appeared. Meek in school, but quite raw and crude beyond the four walls of Royal Province High. Unfortunately, though, the whole thing was beginning to look like rinse and repeat. I can't deny my attraction to most girls, and I am so stupid that I always play along with it. “Do you agree, Mr Holden?” The gruff voice interrupted my musings. “Yeah.” I replied. I had no strength to deny anything. There was no point. I had a record. It's why we moved uptown. “We would like to have your statement now.” He said. Monica was instructed to go out and wait while they took my statement. “We want to know what happened.” The kind woman across the desk, seated next to ‘Gruff Voice’ said. “Monica and I, well
Emma's POV “Mom!” I screamed as soon as Kevin jumped off my mom's moving car. It was a day that would never leave memory. A lot of fucked up things were happening. Just when I thought the day had ended, that had to happen. And in fact, it was the worst of all. Mom helped me with Kevin. After we got him tucked at the back, she jumped on the driver's seat and turned right back, headed for the hospital. It was about to be far too messy and we all knew it. Just when we thought we were done with the police. Hopefully, Kevin would be graceful enough to admit that he jumped out on purpose rather than let my mom take the hit. I was thinking up so many ways it could end, and none of them were good. The only good part was that we didn't have to worry about money. As soon as we got there, Kevin was wheeled in and we were told to wait at the lobby. None of us insisted on going in with him because we both knew he wouldn't be so keen on seeing our faces first when he's revived. I stalke
Emma's POV “And to what do I owe this?” Mom said, disappointed. I could already guess who it was. I remembered her cologne. “Can we talk like adults? The kids look up to us.” She replied, as snidely as she did earlier. “And how's he out so soon? We barely got back.” My replied, still standing in the doorway, making no effort to shift. “It's just a broken bone. We can manage that outside those scary white walls. I wasn't going to subscribe to a reminder of how I lost their dad.” She said, still without emotion. “Mom!” I heard Kayla and Kevin chorus somewhere from behind the door. “He must be worth a tonne.” My mom said as she tore the door open for them to come in.I did not know how to act. For all I care, I still have unfinished business with my mom, then this. “Hi, Emma.” Mrs Harwell said. “Hi.” I was both shy and nervous, but it was polite to reply when someone greets me. Both Kayla and Kevin avoided my eyes as they made their way to the seat next to me.
Emma's POV “What happened ‘earlier’?” I asked her, shooting her the most disgusting of looks. I apparently wasn't the only one doing something the other person would not be proud of. “I don't owe you that information, young woman!” She looked very pissed. I tossed her phone on the counter top and walked out. I really could not believe what just happened. Mark was such a sweetheart, why Mike? I heard her newly done nails clank against the counter top as she picked it up. “A word with you, Emma.” Her tone was shaky. “What would make you think I want to speak to you?” I shouted from my room. I was pissed for so many reasons. At myself, and at her. That was definitely not how I envisioned the day would go. Firstly, it was at Kevin's house, then the police station, then the hospital and now, that?! “Baby, please.” She said as she barged into my room. “Aren't you tired of all this drama?” I asked her. “You mean yours or mine?” She shot back at me. “Well I d
Emma's POV “We are both hurt. I think it's better we realize that and stop shaming the other person. Emma, you're just as damaged as I am.” Chase said. “That's not rocket science, Chase. Isn't this how you leave everyone you've been with?” I asked, “Broken and damaged?” “That's unfair, Em. You keep skipping the fact that there are always two sides to anything.” He replied to me. “You think I did, Chase?” I looked at him in his sinfully sexy blue eyes I still hadn't gotten an antidote to, not even the anger I felt, “All I did was allow you. I made you do all you did to me. In a way, I even enabled you.” “That's untrue, and you know it.” He replied to me. “I've talked about this, over and over. In my head and out of it, and it's still the same conclusion I reach.” I responded to him. “If ‘out of your head’ in any way refers to the bastard up there, I don't think I want to hear it.” I replied to her. “You've gotta get over yourself, Chase.” I said. “There's life
Chase's POV “You're still here, Em. It means you're interested.” I said. “I'm not comfortable here.” She said in a low voice. “I'd be in the garage, meet me there.” I said. “Maybe this is your time to show how low you regard me.” I let go of her hand which I had in mine, doing it both lightly and seductively. I knew I walked with such swagger, such essence that couldn't betray how scared I felt deep inside. Maybe she'd realize that I wasn't worth shit, and just go upstairs to meet her little boyfriend. I sat in my favorite of my dad's lot, the black mustang I saved Emma's ring in. That particular car had so many memories. I wanted to be in. I checked the time on my Patek, it was a few minutes to midnight. The estate gate was gonna be locked by 00:00, and if I couldn't make it out by then, I'd be stuck with Em and that bastard. 23:53, I had begun to get antsy. It'd be really unfortunate if I left, and Em eventually came down. I kept telling myself to calm down and b
Emma's POV “Can I trust you?” I asked Chase. I was mentally drained. Having played the good daughter throughout the anniversary, I wanted to catch my breath. Little did I know I had just been walking straight into Chase’s arms. “You know you can, Em.” He said, enthusiastically. “I'd hold your secret against me, Em. I wouldn't even tell myself.” His eyes mirrored mine, tired, hunger of the soul, and exhaustion. I couldn't believe that it was the same person who acted like I didn't exist last night. “I don't know where I stand with Kevin, really.” I said what I'd forbidden myself to. I made a deal with my mind to never say it. Just so I didn't believe it. The more I said something, the more I was forced to believe. “Start from the point where you left me, Em. I want to know it all.” He said, looking downI hated when Chase had that pensive look on his face. It felt like he was just a slight provocation away from murder. “After us,” I started, my mind was a bit foggy
Chase's POV “What did you do that for?!” Emma yelled after landing me a slap to the cheek. “I already said I wasn't gonna let you go.” I replied stubbornly. “Chase, my arm is hurting.” She cried, referring to the arm I'd been holding. I felt like a nasty person. Maybe it was the universe providing answers to the question I'd asked so many times, “Am I not good enough for her?” Well, I now knew I was too violent, too relentless, too impulsive, I rarely rethought my decisions, I bent everything to my will, things had to suit me, always. And those were all the things Emma stood against. “Emma, I'm a damaged guy, and I know it's really not your job to fix me. I'm a sorry project who should've belonged to my late mom and my dad who's now a happily remarried man. I get it. No one wants a project. But this is me swearing that I'd never hurt you, Em. I've learned. I do better for myself these days.” I said, frantically. Emma was rubbing her arm where I grabbed her, a sorry rem
Chase's POV. “It's not good that I'm too close to you, Chase.” Emma cried. Her eyes were already tearing up, and her face wet. Her rosy cheeks were beginning to peek from beneath the light make-up. “Why, Emma?” I asked her, letting my mouth say all the things my heart felt. “Am I so bad?” I asked. “I never said anything like that.” She answered. “So what is it?” I asked, exhausted. “Why do you want to be away from me so bad? Why do you treat me with such a long spoon? You can't deny missing me, Em. I see it in your eyes. What is holding you back?” I dared reach for her trembling hands, and she didn't pull away. It was a good thing. “Chase, I just still find it so hard to process. I'd rather think about things that hurt me, than process the whole thing. The past year has been the most tumultuous part of my life yet. I'm so fucking drained, I just need peace.” She said, “And you think that description doesn't fit me.”I asked, against my better reasoning. I then remi
Chase’s POV“I didn't think you'd be here.” She said,“I could say the same.” I replied to her Emma was the last person I thought who'd want to catch a break from the ceremony. She was at the center of it all, and really did well at her job of role playing a perfect daughter.“It's too much.” She replied with a low voice.“What is?” I asked, clearing my throat. “The atmosphere.” She explained, kicking the grass in her stilettos. Her legs looked like they must've been hurting. “Here.”I gave way for her to sit on her favorite swing. I could never take that away from her. “Thank you.” Emma was being her generic self, the side that she showed everyone else. Shy and contained. But I didn't like that. I liked that Emma I fell for, headlong. “It's nothing to Chase’s POV “I didn't think you'd be here.” She said, “I could say the same.” I replied to her Emma was the last person I thought who'd want to catch a break from the ceremony. She was at the center of it all, and really
Chase's POV I wished I could remain busy throughout the day. A time to rest meant a time to think. I was under the same roof as Emma, like I'd been wanting, but we were yet so far apart. The flowers were an ill thought decision, but I had to do something. Being in the same house with Emma for over three days was beginning to mess with my mental health. “You shouldn't have done that.” I said to myself. If only Emma had kept it a family thing and didn't have that one over, things would have been a lot easier. I intentionally left a note out of the flower delivery, but I knew she recognised the sender, irregardless. Before I knew it,my 5:30 alarm went off, and I had to throw on my tux as fast as I could. It'd be great if my dad and Linda got down to a full audience waiting for them. It was a really big deal for my dad, so big he had made arrangements for his helicopter to pick them both at ten o'clock. Linda was wearing a slick floor length satin dress in emerald green, paired
Emma's POVI decided to see my mom before the dinner. I didn't care if it was right or wrong, but I'd barely seen her all through the day and I was dying to know how she was holding up. Maybe an escape for myself was the other motive, but primarily, I wanted to know how she was doing. “Hey mom.” I said, pushing her door open. It almost felt like it was her wedding all over again. Mark was going all out. And I didn't know why it had to be that big for a guest list of just sixteen people. “This is a lot.” I smiled. “It is.” I saw the woman beneath all the makeup, hair glam, and accessories. She was still just my mom. “Can I have a moment with my daughter please?” She referred to everyone else in the room who wasn't me, and they, by my rough headcount, were about eight. “We can spare only about half an hour.” A kind lady who looked like she was in her thirties said, She had an outrageous makeup done. While it looked good, edgy, classy on her, I hope that wasn't gonna be my
Emma's POV. “You were gonna go in.” He said, looking away. “I was.” I replied, unshifting. He no longer had the courage to stare me down, and I no longer had the will to leave, “MIT looks good on you.” He said. “Thank you.” I smiled, “I could say the same for you.” “I see you've made new friends, well old ones, but you know…” He said. I chuckled within myself. Who'd have known that I could make the bad boy Chase unsure about me? “Yeah, I had no choice.” I murmured. “Uhm, how are you?” I asked, just out of courtesy, I told myself. I thought being brave and bold was gonna make me indestructible by him, but I was beginning to come off as antagonistic, and I didn't like it. Deep down, in the corners of my heart I hoped Kevin would never see, Chase occupied it. I wanted for him to close the distance between us like he'd once done. To treat me like his own. I was getting a little teary, so I dug my freshly manicured nail into my palm, I wasn't gonna cry, I could not.
