ASHER

My knee had taken a hit somewhere in the second period and I hadn’t let myself think about it until I was off the ice, pulling gear off in the locker room with a limp I couldn’t quite hide.

“You good?” Nathan dropped down on the bench beside me, already halfway out of his own pads.

“I’m not made of plastic.” I peeled the jersey over my head. “I’ll live.”

“Get it checked before it turns into something.” He clapped my shoulder and headed for the showers, and I sat there a second longer, working the strap loose on my shin guard, letting my mind go where it had been trying to go all day.

Leah.

I had seen her in English class earlier. She had not looked at me once, keeping her gaze pinned to her desk as if I were nothing more than empty space. Perhaps she was still carrying the grudge her brother had held against me all those years ago. Whatever the reason, it did not change the reality coiled tightly in my chest. I could not forget her. She was the first girl I had ever liked. Her being on this campus wasn’t helping. Every hallway I turned down, some part of me was already scanning for her without meaning to. And God, she’d only gotten more beautiful, which felt like some kind of personal punishment.

To make things entirely worse, her boyfriend was Noah.

That fact alone forced my hands. I kept my distance, watching her from afar, practicing the cruel art of pretending she did not exist while my chest burned every time she walked into a room.

Jake dropped onto the bench across from me, yanking at his own gear. “You prepping for the next game or what?”

“Been prepping my whole life.” I flexed the knee, testing it.

His eyes caught the movement and narrowed. “Don’t mess that up. Coach is counting on you more than you probably want to hear right now.”

“I’m not the only one who can play this game.” I shrugged the words off easier than I felt them.

“Easy to say when you’re the one he’s built the whole season around.”

“I’ll be fine.”

Jake smirked, leaning back against the lockers. “You know what’d help with the stress? A hot girl and a blow j@b. Works every time.”

I shook my head, my jaw tightening at the suggestion. "That is the absolute least of the things on my mind right now." I grabbed my dry clothes from the locker and zipped my gym bag closed. "I have got to go."

Jake frowned, looking around the locker room. "Are you not even going to shower?"

"I really have to go," I said, swinging the strap of the bag over my shoulder. "It is urgent. I will do that as soon as I get home."

“Take care of yourself,” he called after me, and I lifted a hand without turning around.

I walked out of the locker room, my bad knee clicking slightly with every step, though I refused to slow my pace

I rounded the corner outside the locker room and a voice stopped me cold — familiar in a way that hit somewhere below thought, before I’d even placed it.

My body moved before my brain could process the decision. I hurried toward the sound.

Leah was there, her wrist caught in a tight grip, struggling violently against the hands of her so called boyfriend. Noah was leaning in, his posture aggressive, entirely ignoring her resistance.

Every protective instinct I had spent months burying roared to the surfaced.

“You heard her.” My voice came out lower than I meant it to, harder. “Let go of her.”

Both of them turned. Noah’s face went from surprise to something closer to defensive.

“Mind your own business Romano,” he said.

I stepped closer, close enough that he’d have to look up if he wanted to hold eye contact. “Let go of her, or find out exactly what is going to happen next.”

He held on another second, long enough to make a point of it, then dropped her wrist and lifted both hands like he was surrendering something. “I don’t want a problem.”

He turned to her, voice softening in a way that made my jaw tighten. “I’ll see you soon, Leah.”

Without another word, he turned on his heel and hurried down the corridor, I didn’t let my eyes leave him until he’d rounded the corner and was gone. Then I turned to her.

She stood there rubbing her wrist, breathing fast, refusing to look anywhere near my face.

“You okay?” I asked.

“I am... I am fine." She stammered. She still hadn’t looked at me.

I studied her a second — the way her shoulders had drawn in. She was doing it again, refusing to look at me, treating me like a ghost in her world. The frustration that had been building up for weeks finally broke through my restraint. I stepped closer, blocking her path, forcing her to acknowledge the space we were occupying together.

“Leah.” I said her name slowly, testing it the way I hadn’t let myself do in years. “Do you really not recognize me? Or have you just been doing an excellent job pretending?”

LEAHI walked away from the corridor, my heels clicking against the polished floorboards as a tight, sickening knot pulled together deep in my belly. So truly, Abby was Asher's fiancée. Holy hell.A cold, bitter sting settled behind my ribs, making my breath feel uneven. Wow. So much for wanting me. So much for every low, breathless word he had whispered in the dark of his bedroom last night. "Leah!"Emilia’s voice called out my name, breaking through the static in my head. I stopped in my tracks and turned around to face her as she trotted up the hallway to catch her breath beside me."Did you hear about the flying rumors?" Emilia asked, her eyes searching my face with immediate concern.I gave a silent, indifferent shrug of my shoulders and turned back around, keeping my feet moving toward my locker.Emilia quickened her step, matching my pace along the row of lockers. "Are you fine?"I nodded my head once, my lips pressed into a thin tight line.Just as Emilia opened her mouth to

ASHERMy muscles locked up instantly at the sound of the word slipping from Abby’s lips.*Baby.*I snapped my head sideways, my dark eyes cutting straight toward Leah. The moment my gaze landed on her, she flinched slightly, her chin jerking away as she looked somewhere else quickly, fixing her eyes firmly on the lockers down the hall. A tight, suffocating knot pulled together in the center of my chest.I turned my head back to Abby, my jaw clenching so hard my back teeth ached against the strain. "I want to talk to you privately," I said, my voice dropping low, Abby glanced over her shoulder at Leah, offering a sweet, dismissive wave. "I will see you later, Leah."Without waiting for Leah to respond, I forced my injured leg into motion, limping past the open hallway. Abby fell into step right beside me, the click of her heels echoing against the polished floorboards. I kept moving until we rounded a quiet corner near the stairwell, completely cutting us off from the main corridor and

LEAH"Oh—uh, um... my name is Leah," I stammered out, forcing the words past the thick knot tightening in the back of my throat as I introduced myself to her.Abby reached out, her slim, manicured fingers wrapping around mine in a brief, bone chillingly cool handshake before she released her grip almost instantly."Apparently, rumors have it that you are Asher's girlfriend," she said, her voice dropping into a smooth, dripping cadence of polite distaste that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand straight up. She tilted her head, her eyes scanning my face as if dissecting a minor inconvenience. "Which really doesn't make any sense."I stood frozen right beside my open locker."I... I am not aware of any rumors," I said, my voice pitching up slightly as I scrambled to regain my footing under her oppressive stare. I forced my shoulders back, trying to project a confidence I did not feel. "Don't mind anything going on in this school. People just talk."Abby nodded very slowly, her g

ASHER"Careful with the leg," Caleb said, his voice dropping as he matched my slow pace down the hallway.A sharp, throbbing spike flared through my left knee with every step, but I gritted my teeth and kept moving. "Do not create a scene," I growled, keeping my shoulders squared despite the weight dragging me down. Caleb rolled his eyes, letting out a breath of pure exasperation, but he stayed close to my side.We made our way down the corridor and pushed through the doors into the locker room. The familiar scent of leather, sweat, and floor wax hit us instantly. Michael was sitting near his stall, tying his laces, but the moment he caught sight of me, he stood up immediately."You do not look alright, man," Michael said, his forehead creasing as his eyes swept over my rigid, uneven posture.I leaned heavily against the wooden locker behind me, my jaw clenched tightly. "I am ok, seriously guys.""You shouldn't have even bothered coming to school," Michael countered, stepping closer

LEAHA knock on the wooden paneling made me freeze, my brush halting mid stroke in my hair.I set the hairbrush down on the vanity table and walked over to the door, pulling it open. Asher was standing right outside, his large frame filling the threshold. He had both hands shoved deep into his front pockets, his posture rigid, his dark eyes sweeping over me with an unreadable intensity."Are you ready?" he asked, his voice low and a little husky in the quiet morning air. What happened yesterday flash through my mind and I flushed crimson. "I am ready," I replied. I turned back for a split second, dropping my comb onto the dresser, then stepped past him into the hallway to follow him outside. When we stepped through the front entrance and onto the driveway, Asher’s friend was already waiting. He was leaning casually against the side of a massive Rolls-Royce Cullinan, the dark paint gleaming under the morning sun. What the hell were they up to? Why the big car?As we approached, his fr

LEAHAsher’s mouth moved down to my neck, his lips burning against my skin as he kissed me with a desperate, overwhelming heat. The heat flared wildly, but then his fingers moved to my towel, loosening the knot tucked above my chest. A sharp gasp tore from my throat. My hand shot out, clamping around his wrist to freeze his movement before he can loosen it and expose my body, and I shook my head frantically against the mattress.Asher lifted his weight, pushing himself up on his forearms to look down at me. His chest rose and fell against mine, his dark eyes searching my face in the dim light."What is wrong?" he asked, his voice rough and breathless.I couldn't find the words. I just shook my head again, my fingers digging tightly into his arm, holding the fabric of the towel firmly in place. His eyes narrowed slightly, taking in my rigid posture, the way my breathing rattled in my chest. A sudden realization seemed to settle over his features. "Have you done this before?"My eyes w
