LEAH

“I—I—” The words wouldn’t line up.

“Look at me,” he said.

Slowly, against every survival instinct demanding I turn and run, I lifted my chin. My gaze traveled up the broad expanse of his chest until my eyes finally met his.

“Enough pretending, Leah.” he said, stepping closer until the heat radiating from his body reached mine.

“Enough acting like we don’t know each other. You wanna talk or something? Just say something Leah. How’s life?”

“This isn’t the right time to talk about this.”

“Then when?” His voice didn’t rise, his jaw tightening as he challenged my avoidance. “When, Leah?”

I glanced past his shoulder and my stomach dropped. A small crowd had already gathered near the lockers, phones half lifted, that particular hush that meant people were watching something they’d repeat later. Of course. I was standing in the middle of a hallway with the school’s golden boy, hockey captain, the guy half the student body had a running crush on, and I’d basically just been rescued by him in front of everyone.

Heat climbed straight up my neck. “People are watching. We shouldn’t make a scene.”

He glanced at the crowd without much interest, then back at me. “I don’t care who’s watching. This isn’t about them.”

I stiffened and tried to step past him. His hand caught mine, gentle, but enough to stop me cold, and he turned me back to face him.

“Leah.” Just my name, quiet and something in the way he said it went straight through the center of my chest.

I swallowed hard, pulling my wrist away from his touch, though the skin where his fingers had rested still burned. "I had better get going," I muttered, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to keep it steady.

“Wait—”

I was already walking. He fell into step beside me anyway, out through the doors, and before I could put any real distance between us his fingers found mine again.

“At least let me drive you home.” he offered, looking down at me with a serious expression.

My eyes nearly popped out of my skull. Absolutely not. There was no way in hell I was going to let him give me a ride. Absolutely not. The horror of the possibility flashed through my mind. If I climbed into his car, he would drive me to the destination we now shared. He would find out that his house was now my house. He would discover that my mother was the new lover his father had brought into their lives. The secret would be blown entirely apart, and I was not prepared to handle the fallout of that bomb detonating today.

I needed to find a way to dodge him, and I needed to find it immediately. My mind raced, grasping at any plausible lie.

“You don’t need to worry about that,” I said quickly.

Asher did not let go. His brow furrowed slightly as he maintained his hold. "You should not worry. I can drop you off right at your house."

“I’m not going home right now. I’m waiting for my friend.” I threw a nervous smile at him and walked off fast, leaving him standing there in the middle of the courtyard like I hadn’t just lied straight to his face.

The courtyard was just as crowded as the hallway had been. Several students had gathered near the entrance, some already holding their phones in their hands, their thumbs flying across the screens. This was about to be so bad. Their voices pitched just low enough to pretend they weren’t talking about me directly.

“What’s going on with them?”

“Are they a thing now?”

“Did you see him grab her hand like that?”

“Isn’t she dating Noah?”

I rolled my eyes hard enough to feel it in my skull and scanned the entrance until I found Emilia standing near the doors, eyes wide, one hand pressed flat against her chest like she’d witnessed a car crash.

She’d seen everything.

“I know, I know, I’ll explain,” I said, grabbing her arm and pulling her along before she could plant her feet and demand answers right there in front of an audience.

"You had better do exactly that," Emilia replied, her tone sharp with confusion as she hurried to keep up with my pace. "Because you have been behaving incredibly strangely since this morning."

I pulled her into the first empty classroom I found and shut the door behind us.

She dropped her bag on a desk and crossed her arms. “Talk.”

I took a breath, and it still didn’t feel like enough air. “Asher. I know him. From before I moved here.”

Emilia’s jaw dropped, and her arms fell to her sides. "Are you kidding me?" she yelled, her voice echoing off the empty desks.

“Keep your voice down.”

“Leah.” She lowered it, but only slightly. “You’ve been sitting next to me in three classes acting like that boy doesn’t exist, and now you’re telling me you know him?”

“We grew up together. Back in New York.” I sat on the edge of a desk, my legs suddenly not interested in holding me up properly. “He’s — he was basically —well like enemy with my brother. That’s why we never talk. Never talked.”

She blinked at me, processing that slower than I expected. “Wait.” Her whole face shifted. “You have a brother?”

I let out a long breath, and it came out shakier than I meant it to. “There’s a lot to explain.”

She pulled out the chair across from me and sat down, folding her hands like she was settling in for something long. “I’ve got all day.”

LEAHI walked away from the corridor, my heels clicking against the polished floorboards as a tight, sickening knot pulled together deep in my belly. So truly, Abby was Asher's fiancée. Holy hell.A cold, bitter sting settled behind my ribs, making my breath feel uneven. Wow. So much for wanting me. So much for every low, breathless word he had whispered in the dark of his bedroom last night. "Leah!"Emilia’s voice called out my name, breaking through the static in my head. I stopped in my tracks and turned around to face her as she trotted up the hallway to catch her breath beside me."Did you hear about the flying rumors?" Emilia asked, her eyes searching my face with immediate concern.I gave a silent, indifferent shrug of my shoulders and turned back around, keeping my feet moving toward my locker.Emilia quickened her step, matching my pace along the row of lockers. "Are you fine?"I nodded my head once, my lips pressed into a thin tight line.Just as Emilia opened her mouth to

ASHERMy muscles locked up instantly at the sound of the word slipping from Abby’s lips.*Baby.*I snapped my head sideways, my dark eyes cutting straight toward Leah. The moment my gaze landed on her, she flinched slightly, her chin jerking away as she looked somewhere else quickly, fixing her eyes firmly on the lockers down the hall. A tight, suffocating knot pulled together in the center of my chest.I turned my head back to Abby, my jaw clenching so hard my back teeth ached against the strain. "I want to talk to you privately," I said, my voice dropping low, Abby glanced over her shoulder at Leah, offering a sweet, dismissive wave. "I will see you later, Leah."Without waiting for Leah to respond, I forced my injured leg into motion, limping past the open hallway. Abby fell into step right beside me, the click of her heels echoing against the polished floorboards. I kept moving until we rounded a quiet corner near the stairwell, completely cutting us off from the main corridor and

LEAH"Oh—uh, um... my name is Leah," I stammered out, forcing the words past the thick knot tightening in the back of my throat as I introduced myself to her.Abby reached out, her slim, manicured fingers wrapping around mine in a brief, bone chillingly cool handshake before she released her grip almost instantly."Apparently, rumors have it that you are Asher's girlfriend," she said, her voice dropping into a smooth, dripping cadence of polite distaste that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand straight up. She tilted her head, her eyes scanning my face as if dissecting a minor inconvenience. "Which really doesn't make any sense."I stood frozen right beside my open locker."I... I am not aware of any rumors," I said, my voice pitching up slightly as I scrambled to regain my footing under her oppressive stare. I forced my shoulders back, trying to project a confidence I did not feel. "Don't mind anything going on in this school. People just talk."Abby nodded very slowly, her g

ASHER"Careful with the leg," Caleb said, his voice dropping as he matched my slow pace down the hallway.A sharp, throbbing spike flared through my left knee with every step, but I gritted my teeth and kept moving. "Do not create a scene," I growled, keeping my shoulders squared despite the weight dragging me down. Caleb rolled his eyes, letting out a breath of pure exasperation, but he stayed close to my side.We made our way down the corridor and pushed through the doors into the locker room. The familiar scent of leather, sweat, and floor wax hit us instantly. Michael was sitting near his stall, tying his laces, but the moment he caught sight of me, he stood up immediately."You do not look alright, man," Michael said, his forehead creasing as his eyes swept over my rigid, uneven posture.I leaned heavily against the wooden locker behind me, my jaw clenched tightly. "I am ok, seriously guys.""You shouldn't have even bothered coming to school," Michael countered, stepping closer

LEAHA knock on the wooden paneling made me freeze, my brush halting mid stroke in my hair.I set the hairbrush down on the vanity table and walked over to the door, pulling it open. Asher was standing right outside, his large frame filling the threshold. He had both hands shoved deep into his front pockets, his posture rigid, his dark eyes sweeping over me with an unreadable intensity."Are you ready?" he asked, his voice low and a little husky in the quiet morning air. What happened yesterday flash through my mind and I flushed crimson. "I am ready," I replied. I turned back for a split second, dropping my comb onto the dresser, then stepped past him into the hallway to follow him outside. When we stepped through the front entrance and onto the driveway, Asher’s friend was already waiting. He was leaning casually against the side of a massive Rolls-Royce Cullinan, the dark paint gleaming under the morning sun. What the hell were they up to? Why the big car?As we approached, his fr

A sharp gasp tore from my throat. My hand shot out, clamping around his wrist to freeze his movement before he can loosen it and expose my body, and I shook my head frantically against the mattress.Asher lifted his weight, pushing himself up on his forearms to look down at me. His chest rose and fell against mine, his dark eyes searching my face in the dim light."What is wrong?" he asked, his voice rough and breathless.I couldn't find the words. I just shook my head again, my fingers digging tightly into his arm, holding the fabric of the towel firmly in place. His eyes narrowed slightly, taking in my rigid posture, the way my breathing rattled in my chest. A sudden realization seemed to settle over his features. "Have you done this before?"My eyes w
