LOGINIt was an extremely confidential meeting at a solicitors.
Isabella wasn't present during the first meeting. Elliot had met with Margaret and the newspaper's legal advisor, and his story had been recorded by an independent investigator. Alexander waited with Isabella in her apartment and the silence was becoming increasingly oppressive. However, eventually the phone rang and Margaret spoke. "We've got a statement." Isabella stood up. "What did he say?" "He said that he had collected the ledgers for Richard Vale and they said they would be held temporarily whilst there was an accounting issue within the club." "Did he know what they contained?" "He said that he found out that they contained payments to Meridian that weren't well documented and he became worried so copied several pages." Isabella felt her heart start to pound. "Does he still have the copies?" "Yes and he will give them to the investigators." "What about the originals?" "He said that he handed them over to a secure storage unit for Vale, however several months later he was told to move them again. He is unsure where they are now." "Does he know who told him to move them?" "Richard Vale." Isabella closed her eyes. The evidence had been passed from place to place over the last 7 years meaning that there was even more distance between the wrongdoers and those who had approved of it. However, there was now someone who could directly link Vale to the evidence. "Thank you." Alexander turned to Isabella. __ Alexander looked concerned. "What's wrong?" "Nothing." "Alexander." He looked up. "I've been thinking about Daniel and how hard it must have been to leave everything." "You can't really know how it felt." "No, I can't. But I know how it feels to be terrified of losing your future and how quickly that can become an excuse." Isabella sat beside him. __ "Sometimes." "You made a terrible decision when you were 17 and have been punishing yourself for years. But Daniel is safe and you can actually do something useful." Alexander looked down at his hands. "I want to tell him that I'm sorry." "He knows." "I want him to believe me." "You can't control that." He was quiet for a moment. "There's something else." Isabella's stomach dropped. She was beginning to fear there was another secret. "What?" Alexander pulled a small envelope from his pocket. "I found this in some of my old academy stuff. I kept it after Daniel went missing." He handed it to Isabella. Inside was a photo of two teenage boys on a training pitch. Alexander was smiling widely whilst putting his arm around Daniel who was holding a football. His hair was covering his forehead. On the back Daniel wrote: "Alex, one day we'll play in the biggest stadium in the world. Don't forget me!" Isabella's eyes welled up. "He gave this to you?" __ Alexander looked at the photo. "I would always look at it when I was thinking about him. But then I would hide it away as it reminded me of what I hadn't done." She looked at him. "You don't have to hide it away anymore." He shook his head. "I don't know how to come to terms with it." "Maybe you don't need to come to terms with it. Maybe you just need to stop running away from it." He looked at her and his expression softened. "I love you." This time there was no fear. "I love you too." Isabella leaned her head onto his shoulder. They sat together until the light outside the window began to fade. Later that evening, Daniel Mercer called. "I heard about Elliot." "It's being dealt with by the investigators. His statement might help us figure out what happened to the evidence." He was quiet. "Did he mention me?" "He confirmed that the ledgers were moved after you left and he saw evidence that they weren't well documented." He let out a slow breath. "I was wondering for years if it was as bad as I thought." "It wasn't." "I know that now. But it's nice to hear it from someone else." Isabella nodded. "Have you considered giving a formal statement?" "Yes. I'd like a solicitor there and to know how my information will be used." "That's fair. We'll sort it." She messaged Margaret to let her know Daniel was willing to co-operate. She looked out of the window. Although the truth was coming out, nothing could change the fact that Daniel had lost years of his life and they wouldn't get their childhood back that their father had tried so hard to protect. Some things couldn't be undone. However, for the first time they weren't the only people in control of the story.Golden rays of sunshine filtered through the curtains.Isabella shifted under the covers, automatically reaching for something to keep her warm. The space was empty. She peaked her eye open."Alex?"No response. She sat herself up slightly, glancing at the clock. Only just after seven.Normally Alex would be the last to leave their bed on mornings he didn’t have training. Although today Westbridge FC had an important game coming up, meaning Alex was putting in extra hours at training. But he could have atleast given her a kiss before leaving.Isabella grabbed her phone.Isabella: Where is my husband?A few seconds passed.Alex: Good morning to you too, Mrs Hayes. She smiled.Isabella: You left me alone in bed!Alex: I had to leave early. Training starts at eight.Isabella: You could have given me a kiss.Alex: I did. You were asleep.Isabella: I don’t remember.Alex: Because you were dreaming about me.Isabella giggled.Isabella: Very cocky aren’t we, Captain?Alex: Come down. I’ve le
EPILOGUE – Forever Starts HereOne Year LaterLondon was bathed in golden light.I wasn’t chasing a story.I wasn’t arguing with my editor.I wasn’t poring over dusty documents to uncover a secret that had been hidden.I was wearing my beautiful wedding dress.Standing in front of a mirror. With my mum behind me putting the veil into place.“You look beautiful, Isabella.”I smiled at her in the mirror."Thanks mum."Her eyes shimmered."I wish your dad was here to see you."I smiled gently.I pictured his familiar face appearing in the doorway. His gentle pride shining through as he walked me down the aisle. Telling me not to worry and that even the most complicated stories can end beautifully.I still missed him. Some days I would catch myself feeling sad.Other days I would just feel a dull ache. But now I no longer blamed myself.I no longer had to have the perfect answers to every question."I think he would have liked Alexander."My mum giggled."He would have interrogated him fo
The sun shone through the pale, spring sky as the trees blossomed around London.Isabella hadn’t woken up to her phone. For the first time in months, she hadn’t gone straight to check if there were messages about the Westbridge investigation. The story was no longer all hers...The original financial books had been recovered by the authorities, and there were now independent investigations into the findings. They showed that there were concerns about payments to Meridian Sports Advisory that weren’t properly documented. There was confirmation that it wasn’t possible to conduct the initial review due to obstructions.Richard Vale had also stepped down as an executive during the investigation. Thomas Bennett had stepped down as well at Westbridge whilst they investigated further into his involvement in Daniel’s departure.New financial checks and an independent reporting system for academy players had been announced.Michael Grant had also released a formal statement and passed on any c
The club announced that Alexander Hayes will be returning as the Westbridge captain for the next home game. They praised Alexander for his good behaviour, helping the investigation and continuing to contribute. Many fans applauded the announcement. However, there were still some people who weren't happy with how the club handled the situation.Alexander didn't really celebrate. He just stood there in the changing rooms looking at the captain's armband that the manager had pinned to his locker."Go on," said Daniel Brooks as he walked up to him."What?" asked Alexander."Put it on. You've been staring at it for five minutes.""I don't want people to think I'm forgiving everything," Alexander replied as he picked the armband up."If you don't say they're forgiven, then it's fine. You're ready to lead differently."Alexander slid the armband on his wrist. It felt natural. But it didn't mean the same thing anymore."Guys!" he said as he called everyone together before the game.Everyone f
The public was informed of the investigation. The newspaper published an in-depth article titled:'Westbridge FC Scandal: Records suggest that Academy Finance Investigation stopped.'It explained everything that had happened, including quotes. It detailed how the financial records were passed around. Including quotes from Michael Grant, Harold Finch who confirmed that he had these letters and Elliot Shaw who explained how he found the lost ledgers. They did not mention Daniel but went into detail about his experiences, taking care to ensure his wellbeing and privacy.Thomas Reed was also explained. He had expressed his concerns about the payments and wanted an independent investigation into it. Even though he signed a document for the transfer he seemed to believe that the records would be handed over to external auditors. While they may not be entirely innocent, this shows what we knew.By 9 o’clock the story had exploded.Sports shows were talking about it; ex-staff members were con
