Avery's POV

I got to the lecture hall five minutes early and picked a seat on the left side, third row from the back, which was not where I usually sat but was where I sat today because it gave me a clear line to the door and put me far enough from the front that nobody was going to notice what I was doing with my face for the next hour.

I did not look for Liam.

I got my notebook out and wrote the date at the top of a clean page and looked at the front of the room where the projector was warmin

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Brother   155: Sorry for that

Avery's POVThe corridor had mostly emptied by the time either of us said anything. The students who had slowed down to watch had gone. The ones who had pretended not to watch had gone too. It was just the two of us and the hum of the building and the faint sound of someone's music leaking through a closed classroom door further down the hall. On the floor by the wall there was still a scuff mark from where Zoey's heel had pivoted when she turned and walked away.Liam spoke first."Sorry about that," he said. Not 'I'm so embarrassed' or 'I don't know what's got into her' or any of the ten versions of that sentence that would have made it about him. Just the three words, flat and direct, aimed at me."You don't have to apologise for her," I said."I'm not apologising for her," he said. "I'm apologising for the fact that you were standing there for it."I looked at him. He was looking at the corridor ahead of us, not at me, with the expression he used when something had happened and he

Avery's POVI turned around.Liam was a few steps behind me, jacket on, bag over one shoulder, moving through the thinning corridor crowd with the particular ease of someone who was used to cutting through spaces without bumping into things. He caught up and fell into step beside me without asking if he could."Hey," he said."Hey," I said."Were you just going to walk straight out?""I have a gap before my next class," I said. "I was going to find somewhere to work.""On the project?""Among other things."He nodded, walking alongside me, and for a second it was just that, two people walking down a corridor after a lecture, nothing loaded in it. I had almost convinced myself that was all it was going to be."Can you do this afternoon?" he said. "Instead of Wednesday. I've got something Wednesday evening that's going to run long and I don't want to cut the session short."I thought about it. I had cheerleading practice until four but nothing after that."What time?" I said."Five-ish,

Avery's POVI got to the lecture hall five minutes early and picked a seat on the left side, third row from the back, which was not where I usually sat but was where I sat today because it gave me a clear line to the door and put me far enough from the front that nobody was going to notice what I was doing with my face for the next hour.I did not look for Liam.I got my notebook out and wrote the date at the top of a clean page and looked at the front of the room where the projector was warming up and thought about the outline I had made last night for the project section we still needed to finish. I was very focused and very normal and absolutely not thinking about anything else.Someone sat down two rows in front of me and slightly to the right. I did not look up.The hall filled the way it always did, the noise building gradually and then levelling off as the lecturer came in and people stopped talking. I kept my eyes forward. And then, from the corner of my eye, I felt it.I knew

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Brother   152: Tell him?

Avery's POVI got home and sat on my bed and stared at the wall for a while. Not because I had nothing to think about. Because I had too much to think about and none of it was going to sort itself out cleanly no matter how long I sat there, and I knew that, and I sat there anyway.Zoey's voice kept coming back. Not the sharp parts, not the smile or the sarcasm or the way she had looked at me across the table like I was a problem she had already solved. The last part. The quiet part. 'He seems to be in love with that stripper at the club.' Said like a weapon, landing like something else entirely.Because here was the thing. Here was the part I could not outrun no matter how much distance I put between myself and that coffee place.Liam had told me things. He had sat across from me in a library study room and said things that were not controlled, not filtered, not the polished version instead of the honest one. He had told me there were things he was not sure he was allowed to want. He

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Brother   151: The stripper

Avery's POVI did not move. Not immediately. I stood there with my back half-turned and my bag on my shoulder and those words sitting in the air between us like something that had been thrown and had not finished landing yet.'He seems to be in love with that stripper at the club.'I turned around slowly.Zoey was watching me with an expression I had not seen from her yet today. Not the sharp smile or the calculated patience or the thin pleasantness she had been using as a weapon since I sat down. This one was something else. Something almost like she meant it."What did you say?" I said."You heard me.""Say it again," I said. "Clearly."She looked at me steadily. "The performer at Velvet Underground. Scarlett. The one who does the longest sets on Friday nights." She wrapped her hands around her cup. "I watched him watch her last night and I have never seen him look at anything the way he looked at that stage. Not me. Not anyone." She paused. "He is absolutely gone for her."The coff

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Brother   150: I can see through you

Avery's POVI looked at her.She looked back at me with that small, certain smile, the one she had been building toward since I walked through the door, and waited. The smart thing would have been to ask. To say 'who' and let her have the moment she had been sitting here engineering for the past hour. That was what she wanted. She wanted me to lean forward and drop the composure and give her the satisfaction of watching me care out loud.I picked up my bag."Good for him," I said.Zoey blinked. Just slightly. "That's it?""What else would you like me to say?""I don't know," she said. "Most people would be a little more curious.""I'm not most people," I said. "And Liam's feelings are not my concern. Whatever he feels for whoever he feels it for is between him and that person and has absolutely nothing to do with me.""You keep saying that.""Because it keeps being true." I adjusted the strap of my bag on my shoulder. "And I'll say it one more time so we're clear. Whatever is going on

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Brother   023: Practice on the field

Avery's POVI was driving.Jade had offered but I had the keys already and we both knew the real reason was that I needed something to do with my hands on the way to cheer practice that afternoon. She sat in the passenger seat with one earbud in and her chin resting on her hand and she watched the

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Brother   021: He didn't come

Avery's POVThe shock on his face was almost satisfying.Almost, because it didn't last as long as I wished so much in my head that it would.Professor Cross touched the side of his face with two fingers like he was checking to confirm what had just happened, and his expression cycled through sever

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Brother   015: We should stop

Avery's POV The words stuck in my throat and I couldn't get them out. I looked at him in front of me in the low light with his blue-green eyes patient and his whole body leaning forward like someone who genuinely wanted the answer, and I felt the name right there at the tip of my tongue. "I can'

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Brother   011: Confronting Brianna

Avery's POVI had about three seconds to decide whether to stop her.I used them watching Jade cross the gym floor with that particular walk she had when she was done being reasonable, and I decided that three seconds was not enough time to get between Jade Rivera and someone she had decided needed
