I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at the wall as Dorian’s words replayed in my head.

If you don’t come to my room, the consequences will be yours to deal with.

I clenched my hands, remembering the way he had looked at me before walking out. He actually thought he could control every aspect of my life just because I was his wife on paper.

Well, he was wrong. I wasn’t going to his room tonight, and if he wanted to make my life miserable, he could do so without expecting me to beg him for anything.

I lay back on my bed, pulled the covers over myself, and closed my eyes.

***

A bucket of cold water splashed across my face.

My eyes flew open, and I blinked, struggling to adjust to the shock. Dorian came into view, a frown on his face as he stared down at me.

“You didn’t come last night,” he said flatly.

Water dripped down my face as I wiped my eyes with the back of my hand.

“And you can’t force me,” I replied.

“This is your punishment for what you did, so face it. You wanted to be my wife, so get used to it,” he said coldly.

I pressed my lips together, trying to hold back my anger. “You know, instead of blaming me for everything, why don’t you just divorce me? You can marry your true love and leave me alone.”

My voice rose slightly as I stared straight at him.

His expression faltered for a moment. He seemed surprised by my response, probably because he was used to the quiet girl who never talked back.

“We have a charity party tonight,” he said, adjusting his sleeves. “You’re coming with me, but you must stay in the shadows. Don’t draw unnecessary attention to yourself. Your maid will bring you the dress you’re expected to wear.”

I stared at him. He had just thrown a bucket of water on me, and now he was giving me orders as if nothing had happened.

“Are you done?” I asked, pushing the wet hair away from my face.

He gave me one last look before turning around. “Make sure you’re ready before noon.”

He walked out, leaving me with water dripping from my clothes.

I had barely finished drying my hair when someone knocked on the door.

“Come in.”

The maid walked in, holding a clothing bag. “Madam, Mr. Blackwood asked me to bring this for you.” She placed it on my bed without meeting my eyes.

I opened it and brought out the dress. It was old, with faded material and loose threads around the sleeves.

“Did he tell you to bring this?”

She nodded, and I dropped the dress on the bed. “Of course he did.” I wasn’t even surprised anymore.

After a shower, I put it on and stood in front of the mirror. The sleeves were too loose, and it barely fit. I brushed my hair, applied a little lip gloss, and picked up my handbag.

I walked downstairs, and the first person I saw was Lara. She was standing near the staircase, checking her phone, in a champagne-coloured gown that fitted her perfectly. The necklace around her neck looked expensive.

Her eyes moved towards me, and a smile appeared on her face.

“Oh, Elena. You’re ready.”

I looked at her dress, then glanced down at mine. “Funny,” I muttered.

“What’s funny?”

“Nothing. I was just wondering if we’re attending the same party.”

She laughed and looked down at her gown. “Oh, this? Dorian picked it for me. He said I should look good since I’ll be meeting some important people tonight.”

“How thoughtful of him.”

Just then, Dorian walked into the living room, adjusting his wristwatch. His eyes went straight to Lara.

“You look good,” he said.

“Thank you.”

His eyes moved to me, and I waited for him to say something. He looked at my dress but said nothing before turning away. Of course. What else had I expected?

Before she walked past me, Lara stopped. “Try not to embarrass him tonight, Elena.”

“Then try not to give me a reason to.”

Her smile faltered slightly, and I walked past her before she could reply.

Outside, Dorian opened the car door for Lara and let her get in before looking at me.

“Don’t worry,” I said. “I can open a door myself.”

Nobody spoke during the journey except Lara, who talked about the people she expected to meet. I watched the buildings pass by the window. If they wanted to pretend I wasn’t his wife, I could do the same.

The car stopped in front of a hotel lit like a stage. Photographers lined the carpet. Lara reached for the door, already smiling for the cameras.

I got out from the car first. Flashbulbs went off before I could take a second step. A man shouted, “Mrs. Blackwood! Over here!” Then another voice, and another, until my name rolled down the carpet. They knew exactly who I was. The replacement bride who married Blackwood in the middle of a scandal.

I stood in the light, in a dress that looked like it came from the bottom of a cupboard, and didn’t move.

Behind me, I heard Dorian get out of the car. He had told me to stay in the shadows, and I had just put myself in front of every camera in the city.

“Elena.” His voice was low and dangerous to my ear. “What do you think you’re doing?”

I turned and met his eyes, my chin lifted.

“Not hiding,” I said.

Elena’s POVI woke up to a maid standing beside my bed with a newspaper in her hands. She looked uncomfortable, almost like she didn’t know how to tell me what was inside.“Good morning, ma’am.”I sat up and rubbed my eyes. “What’s wrong?”She hesitated before handing me the newspaper. I looked at the front page and immediately understood her expression. There was a picture of Dorian carrying me out of the ballroom last night. My arms were around his neck, and my face was turned away from the cameras. The headline was written in bold letters.BLACKWOOD’S REPLACEMENT BRIDE.I stared at it for a few seconds before dropping the paper on the bed. Being carried out of a party was apparently enough to become the talk of the city.I got dressed and went downstairs for breakfast. I was expecting a fight, but I wasn’t prepared for the number of people at the table. Dorian was there, along with Seraphine and Lara, and a few others seated around them. Dorian didn’t look up when I walked in.I pu

Elena’s POVDorian placed his hand on my back as we entered the ballroom. Cameras flashed almost immediately, and he put on a smile, looking every bit like the loving husband he was supposed to be. I forced a small smile of my own, knowing we were only pretending for the people watching us.The moment we stepped inside, his hand dropped from my back. His smile disappeared, and he returned to the cold expression I had become familiar with.“Come with me.”I followed him through the crowd, trying not to stumble in my uncomfortable shoes. He stopped behind a large pillar in one corner and turned to face me.“Stay here. Don’t speak to anyone, and don’t move from this spot until I come back.”I stared at him. “Am I supposed to stand here the whole evening?”He gave me a warning look. “I don’t want to repeat myself, Elena.”Before I could reply, he walked away. I watched him cross the room, and it didn’t take long before Lara appeared in front of him. She took his arm, looking beautiful in

  • Falling for My Unwanted Bride   Chapter four

The days after the wedding passed in a blur I couldn't escape. I did everything I could to stay invisible in the house. Seraphine never liked me, and she and my sister mocked me every chance they got.I walked to my wardrobe and brought out my outfit for the day, a plain white gown. Dorian had ordered that I wear clothes of the same level as a maid's, since I wanted to be his wife, which I never did.As I walked to the dining table to get my breakfast, voices made me pause. Seraphine, Lara and Dorian were all sitting at the table, looking like a perfect family. I turned around quickly to avoid them, but a voice chimed in loudly."Ohhh, my sister is here," Lara said, glaring at me.All eyes turned to me. Dorian's face was cold, and Seraphine's was disapproving.I forced a smile as I stared at them. "I came to get something, but it seems it's in my room. I'll take my leave," I lied bluntly, turning to leave quickly."You're our family's wife. Come and serve your in-law," Seraphine said.

  • Falling for My Unwanted Bride   Chapter three

I stood at the front of the hall, my wedding gown spread across the ground. I did not crouch down to hold it, because right now nobody was here to carry me to my supposed husband's house.Dorian had taken the car and left me stranded. My parents and my sister had not asked about me. It wasn't as if they really cared, and they must have hoped I would die. I had no cash on me."Miss Elena," an older man said as he walked towards me. I glanced at him, wondering who he was. He reached into his pocket and brought out a stack of cash. "Your husband asked me to give this to you, to take public transport."I stared at the cash."And what of the car?" I asked. The man's expression changed as I looked around."He specifically told me his first love was injured and needed the full back seat for herself," he explained, his face filled with pity for me.My hands closed on my dress."I will take my leave," he said quickly, handing me the cash. It felt heavy in my hands. I really couldn't believe th

  • Falling for My Unwanted Bride   Chapter two

I opened my mouth to defend myself, but Dorian's cold eyes glared at me like he could kill me, and Lara beat me to it."She locked me up!" she cried out, grabbing Dorian's shirt and pulling him closer to her. "I tried to tell her to stop. I told her she would find her own husband, but she refused." Her voice trembled as she whispered, "She quickly stretched out her hands, and when I told her to stop, she hit me so badly that my hand scraped and I almost died." Tears flowed down her face."This is unbelievable! I did no such thing. I don't even remember seeing you last night," I argued, my voice almost a plea. I glanced at my parents. My mother's eyes filled with tears as she looked at my sister with pity. My father just shook his head, like I was a disappointment he couldn't get rid of.Dorian's hands moved to her shoulders as he pulled her closer, his eyes scanning her face to check if she was hurt. I stood there watching them as I tried to understand what was happening. Lara buried
