Franklin’s POV

I almost didn’t go.

I stood in my apartment for a good ten minutes after the call ended, jacket still on, bag still over my shoulder, weighing it. Vivian and I had history that stretched back further than most of my memories… the kind of friendship that forms before you’re old enough to choose people deliberately, rooted in proximity and shared years and the particular loyalty of children who only have each other to rely on. That didn’t dissolve just because time had passed.

Franklin’s POVThe first thing I felt when I woke up was my neck. Not because anything dramatic had happened to announce it… just a dull, specific tenderness on the left side, the kind that sits just below the surface and reminds you of itself every time you turn your head. I lay still for a moment, cataloguing the rest of it. My shoulders ached. My mouth was dry in the particular way that follows a night of bad decisions. The light coming through the curtain was the pale, uncommitted light of early morning.I got up slowly and went to the bathroom. The mirror showed me what I expected from the neck down… creased shirt, the general dishevelment of someone who had slept in their clothes. Then I looked higher.I leaned in.Two marks. Small, close together, already bruising slightly at the edges, sitting on the left side of my neck in a place that was not easy to reach accidentally.I stood there looking at them for a long moment. Then I picked up my phone.Rydan answered on the third ri

Franklin’s POVThe clinic was on the ground floor of the main building, past the administrative offices and through a door that always stuck slightly at the bottom. I held it open for Vivian and she walked through ahead of me, one hand pressed to her side, her steps smaller than usual.I pulled a chair out and she lowered herself into it slowly, and I sat in the one beside her and said nothing for a moment. The room smelled like antiseptic and the particular artificial warmth of buildings that run their heating too high. A clock on the wall ticked audibly. Then she started crying. Not the careful performance I had half expected from the version of her I had watched in the changing room… this was different. Quieter. The kind that doesn’t announce itself, that comes in without permission and sits there. Her shoulders curved and she pressed her fingers to her mouth and I felt the pull of years of reflex, of being the person beside her when things fell apart.I put my arm around her shoul

Rydan’s POVI saw them before they reached the gate.Franklin was walking slightly ahead, the way he always did when he was comfortable… that loose, unhurried stride that I had learned to read the way you learn to read weather. The girl was beside him, close enough that their arms occasionally touched. She was saying something. He was listening. Whatever it was made him dip his head in that way that meant he was holding back a smile.I turned back to the ice and didn’t look again.I kept the distance through warm-up and maintained it through the first set of drills. This was manageable. I had lived three hundred years primarily through the discipline of not reacting to things I felt, and one person on the edge of a field was not going to dismantle that. I moved through the session the way I always did… efficiently, with full attention, giving the team what they needed from me as captain.I was fine.At the break, I remembered my phone. I had left it in my jacket in the changing room,

That didn’t dissolve just because time had passed.I went. She had picked a place near the centre of town, a small bar with warm lighting and the kind of background noise that makes conversation feel private. She was already there when I arrived, seated at a corner table, and she stood when she saw me with a smile that was genuinely happy. That part was easy to receive. Whatever complicated thing Vivian was, she had always been glad to see me.We hugged briefly and sat down. For the first half hour it was fine. Better than fine. She talked about whe

Franklin’s POVWe walked back out separately.Rydan first, then me, after enough time had passed that it wouldn’t look like what it was. I came through the changing room door with my stick in hand and my expression set to something I hoped read as neutral, and rejoined the session like I had simply stepped out to adjust my equipment.Nobody said anything. That didn’t mean nobody noticed.I took my position and tried to get back into the rhythm of the drill, but something had come loose in my concentration and I couldn’t quite tighten it back up. My body went through the motions… the passes, the turns, the back-and-forth of the sequence… but my mind was still in that changing room, pressed against the lockers, listening to the water running.Someone had been in there. That was the thing I couldn’t let go of. The bathroom at the far end wasn’t a shortcut to anywhere. You went in there because you were already in the changing room, which meant whoever it was had come in before us, or fol

Franklin’s POVI woke up to the unfamiliar weight of someone else on the mattress. For a second I just lay there, staring at the ceiling, piecing it together. The film had ended somewhere around midnight. We had talked after, still on the couch, low voices, the kind of conversation that only happens when it’s late and the rest of the world has gone quiet. At some point we had moved, and at some point after that, sleep had arrived without announcing itself.Rydan was on top of the covers, fully dressed, one arm folded under his head. Asleep, he looked younger. All that composure had nowhere to perform, so it had simply vacated, and what was left was just a person, resting.I watched him for a moment longer than was probably reasonable, then got up carefully and went to the kitchen.I moved around quietly… eggs, the pan my mom kept on the second hook, bread in the toaster. The morning light coming through the kitchen window was pale and thin, the kind that belonged to cold days. I worke

Calen’s POVI couldn’t stop thinking about it.About him, what we’d done, and the way my body had moved without permission, reaching for him, wanting him in a way that made no logical sense.I sat on my bed in my dorm room, staring at the wall, trying to understand what the hell was happening to m

Calen’s POV“Karl, we’re in a library,” I hissed, my voice barely above a whisper. His hand didn’t move. If anything, his grip tightened slightly, sending a jolt of unwanted pleasure through my body.“I don’t care,” Karl said, his voice low and dangerous. “You need to understand something, Calen. Y

Karl’s POVI couldn’t focus. The entire morning had been a waste. I’d sat through two lectures without absorbing a single word, my mind circling back to the same thought over and over.Calen.The way he’d looked at me yesterday. The boldness in his touch. The sounds he’d made. The feeling of him wr

Karl’s POVI’d been holding myself back the entire time. From the moment I’d woken up that morning, the urge to see Calen had been overwhelming. It wasn’t just desire… though that was definitely part of it. It was something deeper. More consuming. Like my body knew where he was and wouldn’t settle
