They were both quiet on the ride back to the hospital.

Leah sat with her hands folded neatly in her lap and a neutral expression on her face as she gazed out the window. She was trying her best not to think about how attracted she was to the extremely handsome man to her left.

And bossy. Don’t forget amazingly, infuriatingly bossy, her psyche threw in.

***

Meanwhile, Larry was deep in thought about his two biggest problems, the first being how he was going to keep them safe in a very dangerous situation.

But his brain refused to stay on task and was trying to gauge just how badly he’d damaged any chance of getting to know the fascinating woman beside him.

It chafed his pride as a federal agent to have to admit he was struggling with keeping those problems in that order of priority at the moment. He was in completely new territory. Leah was the first woman he’d looked twice at in years – and it was happening at the worst possible time.

Pull it together, dude, he thought to himself. Focus and do your job. You’re responsible for their safety. If you make a single wrong decision, it could get them both killed. Remember that. Save the high school antics for later.

With an effort, Fuller shoved his concerns about Leah Culverton’s opinion of him into a box in the corner of his mind – and padlocked it.

He pulled into the hospital lot, parked, and said, “Okay, let’s get back in there,” in his best professional manner.

But he couldn’t help but notice that this time, Leah waited and let him open the door for her.

After Shannon was discharged from the hospital, the three traveled to Fuller’s office. He gave her and Leah his take on what had happened to Robert, answering the shocked questions they each had the best he could as he went.

More importantly, he impressed upon them the very real danger Shannon Rivers was in.

He maintained his professional demeanor throughout, but inside, his emotions were churning.

Being ripped away from everything you know, through no fault of your own… it’s got to be really hard on them, he thought to himself, and vowed to get them back to their normal lives as quickly as he possibly could.

Once he’d told them all he knew, and answered the questions they had, the trio left his office to head to a small regional airport in the suburbs for their flight to Fort Worth, Texas.

On the drive to the airport, Leah asked abruptly, “Are you staying in Texas with us?”

“I will see you safely to your destination, but no, I can’t stay,” he answered, and gazed at her in the rearview mirror as he thought, even though I’d really like to spend more time with you.

He stared so intently at Leah that she finally blushed and looked away.

***

After they landed, the ladies were introduced to Pete Jenkins, U.S. Marshal, the man who’d be their primary guardian. Leah blocked his approach and demanded to see his identification. Only when she was satisfied did she move out of his way so that he could get close to Shannon.

And Leah immediately noticed the heat radiating between the newcomer and her best friend, and barely stifled a grin.

Pretty big fireworks going off there, she observed.

She felt Fuller, who was standing to her left and just behind her, staring at her, so she slowly turned to face him. He was focused completely on her, and Leah was shocked to her core to see tenderness in his expression.

Pete saying “Likewise” in response to Shannon’s greeting pulled both Leah and Fuller back to reality, and the men grabbed the suitcases and led the way out of the plane and over to Pete’s truck.

They left the airport, Pete behind the wheel, Fuller in the front passenger seat, and the roommates in the spacious back seat of the crew-cab truck. Which was fine with Leah and Shannon, because they used the notebook to gossip back and forth about the men in their company during the first part of the drive.

Don’t look now, but I think mister FBI dude has a thing for you, Shannon wrote first, her face twisting into a smile.

Whatever. He’s bossy. You know I don’t do well with that! Leah had responded.

Whatever, yourself. He’s given you some really, really steamy glances a couple of times. I’m deaf, not blind, you know. And you two are cute together.

He is SO not my type!

Shannon had to stifle a giggle at that one.

Let me see. He’s tall, he’s built, he’s handsome, with a steady job, and he seems to have an actual personality. What did I overlook that’s NOT your type?

I’m not doing this right now, Leah shot back. My focus is you, that’s why I’m here. The fact that there’s a pretty boy around doesn’t hurt, but that’s not what this is all about.

Famous last words, Shannon wrote, and then their conversation was interrupted so Fuller and Leah could go into the pharmacy Pete had stopped at to get the medical supplies.

***

Later, when they arrived at the farmhouse and a tall, dark and handsome Pete scooped an exhausted Shannon up into his arms to carry her, Leah almost squealed with delight for her friend.

That’s what she deserves. Someone who looks at her that way. Like she hung the moon, Leah thought, and it made her a bit wistful as she started to try to reach over the side of the truck bed and grab luggage.

“Let me get those for you,” came a voice from her right.

She swiveled her head to find Larry standing beside her, his head cocked slightly to one side and a warm smile on his lips.

I wonder what he kisses like was her next thought, and her eyes went wide as she imagined it.

“You okay?” he asked.

“Um. Yeah, fine,” she stammered. “Just, you know… the suitcases.”

“Again, let me get those for you,” he offered. “Or would you rather climb up the side of the truck and try to reach them yourself?”

The next morning, she stretched and yawned, reveling in the feel of him snuggled up behind her.It feels so natural being beside him, Leah realized. So perfect. And she sensed he must have had the same thought, because Larry pulled her closer, turned her over, kissed her deeply, and murmured in her ear “I want you,” as he maneuvered her body onto his for a proper good morning ritual.***Later, after they’d showered and dressed, Larry said, “Which store did you want to hit first?”“Well, I’m not sure, to be honest,” she said. “The furniture place, I guess? And then the grocery store for some things. But I can hold off on the perishable stuff until I’m moved back in over there.”“Makes sense,” he said, even as he thought to himself although I think it would be awesome to have you here all the time.***They selected the couches and beds and arranged to have them delivered, then headed to the store to replenish the badly gutted kitchen. It was almost seven p.m. before all the new dishes

“Not like that!” Larry stammered, then chuckled when he saw she couldn’t keep a straight face. “You can have my bed, and I’ll take the couch. I mean, the fluff all over your living room is what made your couch usable, right?”“Fair point,” she conceded. “But seriously - wouldn’t me staying at your place break that whole ‘we have to maintain appearances’ thing? Just saying.”“And the boss said I am to guard you personally, remember? Easier to do that if we stay together. Just saying.”She looked up at him and batted her eyelashes.“You are so stubborn, Agent Fuller. It’s a good thing you’re cute.”He belly-laughed, and said, “Come on, let’s go see how bad the damage is in the bedrooms.”***Twenty minutes later, Leah threw up her hands in disgust. They’d put bureau drawers back in place, then put the scattered clothes away in both rooms. But Leah’s and Shannon’s beds were a complete loss, all the way down to the box sets.“Whoever carved these up wasn’t hugged enough as a child, or som

He arrived at the Bureau’s parking garage entrance and was vetted by security. The remote-controlled gate lifted, and he drove in, pulling into his assigned spot. Then he went around to open her door.“Miss Culverton,” he said, and gestured. She stepped down gracefully and said, “Thank you, Agent Fuller,” in a spot-on ‘you-bore-me’ tone.“Right this way, please.”They moved into the elevator, standing several feet apart, as two strangers would, for the ride up to the Director’s floor.***“I’m sorry you guys had to scramble like that, Larry,” the Director of the Chicago division said once they’d been shown into his office and seated in his visitor’s chairs.“And to you, Miss Culverton, my apologies. How is Miss Rivers?”“She’s well, sir. She opted to stay… where we were, and watch over U.S. Marshal Jenkins, sir.”“I see,” he said, fingers steepled. “Larry, it’s my understanding both were directly involved in the events of the last forty-eight hours?”“Yes, sir, right in the middle of

Once they were roughly ten miles from Indianapolis, Leah pulled up directions to the nearest Portillo’s and cued up her GPS.“This will take us straight there,” she announced.A half-hour later, they’d placed their orders and were waiting for their food. When their number was called, she beamed.“I’ll be right back,” Larry said, and promptly returned with her chopped salad and his Italian beef sandwich.“I propose a toast,” she said, raising her lemonade. “To surviving crazy exes.”He clinked his glass against hers, and added, “And here’s to new beginnings.”As they ate, they learned more about each other.“I’m originally from Texas,” Leah told him. “I was born in Killeen, but we moved all over the place; my dad was Army, too. When he retired from the service we settled in Tulsa.”“What made you choose Chicago for college?”“It wasn’t my first choice,” she said. “But I got a scholarship that covered the first two years of school, so, it was kind of a no-brainer at that point.”“I can

By mid-morning, Shannon was preparing to climb behind the wheel of Pete’s truck to go spend her day with him. Leah made a last check that Shannon’s bandages were staying in place, then hugged her.Text me if you need me, and I will get back here as quick as I can, Leah wrote. Unless you need me to stay. I can stay, you know.“I love you, and I appreciate your concern,” Shannon said. “But I’m good. I’ve got this. Okay? They stayed as long as hospital visiting hours allowed, then returned to the farm. Larry managed to convince Shannon to eat before sending her off to bed.“She’ll be okay, now that she knows Pete’s going to be fine,” Leah assured him. “She’s strong. And stubborn.”“Maybe that’s why you two are best friends?” he teased, and she laughed.“Probably. We met the first day of freshman orientation, standing in line to get registered. Later, when we got to the dorm, we found out we’d been assigned as roommates. Small world, right?”He nodded.“Anyway, she and I just hit it off immediately,” Leah continued. “We got along so well that once freshman year was done and we weren’t required to live on campus anymore, we found an apartment together.”Larry sensed there was more to the story, but he kept quiet.“Hey, I noticed there’s a fire pit out back,” she said suddenly. “Could we build a fire, maybe sit out under the stars for a while?”“Coming right up,” he said, and smiled.Larry deftly arrange
