In school the next day, Amanda went straight to Mr Jefferson's office to explain why she couldn't work with her partner. Upon getting to his office, she knocked lightly, waiting for the go ahead to come in.
"Amanda. Yes, what can I do for you?" he asked. He was a tall lean man with a head full of hair. His glasses was perched on his nose as he peered down on the paper he was holding. When he spoke, it was with a thick foreign accent that she couldn't quite place. "Sir, I've come to inform you that I wouldn't be working with my partner anymore." She said."I see. If I may ask, why is this so".Amanda proceeded to explain all that had happened. If there was one teacher whom she could say that didn't tolerate laziness of any kind, it was Mr Jefferson."Alright, that's fine. I hope you have yours ready?" He asked."Yes sir"."Great, you'll submit together with others when I have your class later today." he said."Thank you." Amanda said before taking her leave. She heaved a huge sigh of relief when she got out of the office. She didn't expect it to go so smoothly and was glad that Mr Jefferson saw reasons with her. She made her way towards her first class of the day which she happened to have with her friends. Settling on her chair, she brought out the books she would be using. Her friends soon joined her as they took the seat beside her. "I talked to Mr Jefferson and he accepted."she said. "That's great. Now, you're free", Emily said."But I have a feeling that Parker won't like this." Leslie said. "Who cares about what he likes or not. He's clearly at fault here and Amanda shouldn't be made to do all the work that was originally assigned to the both of them." Emily said.Just then, Parker walked into the class. It was as if wherever he stepped, he commanded silence. As he walked towards his seat at the back of the class, the classroom remained silent waiting to see his next move. Of course, he wasn't in the mood for anything but the class always watched him, like a predator stalking it's prey. "It's such a pity that for someone so handsome, he's a total douchebag." Emily said."I agree. Too bad he's a dwib and a self centered jerk." Leslie said. The teacher soon came in, cutting off their conversations. Amanda focused on his teachings as she tried desperately to avoid looking back. "Resist the urge to look back, it's not healthy." Emily said.Amanda could tell that her friend fought desperately to hide her smile. At that moment, she felt like a love struck teenager. She shook off the feeling, concentrating on the teachings. When the class was over, Amanda was the first to get out. The next class was Mr Jefferson's and she wanted to settle in before he walked in.As the other students walked into the class, Amanda prayed within her that Parker should somehow miss this class. She couldn't imagine what she'd do if Mr Jefferson embarrassed him due to what she had told him earlier. Her hopes were dashed when sometimes later, Parker walked in before Mr Jefferson did.Amanda sat still, twisting her pen in her hands. She was nervous as she didn't know what to expect. Fiddling with her book, she could feel Brandon's eyes on her. She wondered if perhaps Mr Jefferson had already informed him about his punishment for failing to do the homework and he in turn was planning how best to punish her. "So class, I gave you an assignment in the previous class. I hope you have them ready?" Mr Jefferson asked.Amanda pulled her's out from her bag, placing it on the table. Mr Jefferson went round the class, row by row collecting the assignment. When he got to where Parker sat, he stopped. The whole class fell silent as they watched the impending confrontation they knew would happen between them."Where is your homework Parker?" He asked."I didn't do it sir."he said, boldly. "Why?"I don't know how and my partner wasn't cooperative." He said.At this, Amanda stared at him openly. She couldn't believe his guts, this was a blatant lie and the only reason why she wasn't bothered so much was because she had already informed Mr Jefferson about everything that had happened."I see you now resort to lies. For your information, your partner, Amanda has informed me about everything that had happened. Meet me in my office after lunch break, you'll be given the necessary punishments."he said before moving to the next row.If it was possible, Amanda wished the ground could open up and swallow her. She didn't expect Mr Jefferson to openly embarrass Parker that way she what's worse, he mentioned her way. Amanda knew she was in deep trouble. Parker would never forgive nor forget what she had done. She could only hope that she comes out of it alive.*********************
As Amanda walked home that day, after the close of school, her mind was filled with all that had happened. When Mr Jefferson's class ended, Parker left the class immediately. Throughout the rest of the day, he never spoke to her. She didn't know what his punishment was but rumours had it that he was invited to the principal's office which seemed worse."Did you really think you'd run away from me?" a voice sneered.Amanda knew that voice. She shivered as she searched everywhere for it's source. She was in that alley, the same point where she was attacked by Ian and his friends. Parker came out into the light as Amanda slinked back. She was scared. She was alone and she didn't know what he was going to do. "What do you want Parker?" she said. She wanted to appear brave but that was failing as her voice quavered with every word she said. Parker walked towards her like a predator about to catch his prey."Amanda, you've forgotten that no matter where you go or hide, I'll find you."he said quietly. Her back was to the wall now, he was directly in front of him and she could feel his breath on her face. She fumbled in her pocket for her phone, hoping she could dial anyone's number, someone who could save her from this bully.
She flinched when she saw Parker's fist. She was expecting a blow from him but it never came. When she opened her eyes, he had moved back, staring at her like he couldn't recognize her.
"Just... Stay away from me. I don't want to hurt you and never will I." He said.
Just then, before he could do anything else, he groaned, moving away from her. When he moved, Amanda saw her friends, Emily and Leslie. They had hit him with a huge book. "Never go close to her again, ever." Emily said.At this point, Amanda was a bit scared of her. Her face was filled with terror as she landed him another blow on his head. Parker groaned as he walked away, holding his head. "Oh God, are you okay?" Emily said. They moved towards her and Emily drew out a tissue paper, cleaning the blood on her cheeks. "How did you guys find me?" Amanda croaked. "You dialled my number but you weren't speaking and when I heard that douchebag's voice on the phone, I knew you were in trouble. We were lucky we found you here. Seriously, you need to report this it's getting too much", Emily said."She's right, you really need to. This can't continue said. anymore." Leslie said"I'll be fine guys, I promise. I don't want to add any more problems to my already packed up ones." Amanda said.
Her friends took her home and she was glad that her parents weren't at home at that moment lest, the school would be raised down the following day. As she prepared for bed later that night, she wondered why she was always the target for bullies.A sharp burst of thunder hit the small town and within minutes, the rains began pouring so did Amanda's tears. The following day was a public holiday, one of the rare days where the students could laze about doing nothing. Amanda woke up bright and early, vowing to put all her mysteries behind her. She was going to enjoy the day to the fullest and the first thing she did was to invite her friends over. Her parents weren't at home but she wasn't surprised since her mother had called earlier to inform her that she would be traveling with the rest of the archaeologists for a conference.Amanda had no idea how long but she hoped it was soon. Deep down, she really missed her parents and wished they could hold off on their numerous travels and business trips. The loud chime of the doorbell disrupted her thoughts as she quickly rushed towards the door to let them in. Emily and Leslie bounded in, carrying bags filled with snacks. Amanda had no idea they were bringing this and was quite surprised. "Oh guys, you shouldn't have done this." she said. "Let it never be heard that the great Emily came to
The following day in school, Amanda gave her friends the rundown of everything she discovered. They were quite surprised on hearing this news and couldn't quite believe that Parker's father was a victim of the Ponzi scheme."Now, I know why he's here. They needed a fresh start, away from all the things that reminded them of their problems." Emily said. The girls were currently in the cafeteria, munching on their food. It was another dull day ar school as not much activity was held due to the term slowly coming to an end. Most of their projects and assignments were already submitted and they were counting down to the day for the exam."Ian and his friends are organizing a party this weekend." Emily said."Nice of them to do that but I ain't going." Leslie said."Same here. I can't present myself to be bullied anymore, I'm tired of it." Amanda said."True though. If you girls aren't going, I'm not going either. Friends stick together. But seriously, Amanda, you really need to report this
The next day, Amanda woke up with a renewed strength. She vowed that nothing was going to spoil her day. Not Parker not Ian or his friends. As Amanda prepared for school that day, she made a promise to stand her ground no matter what happened. Her phone gave a sharp beep, indicating she had a call. The caller ID showed that it was her mother calling."Hey mum." she beamed. She had missed her mum a lot and couldn't wait for the day she got back home from her trip. Ever since she left, she had been all alone in the house, lasting about without any one to talk to."Hey darling, how have you been?" her mum said from the other end."I'm just here mum. I miss you, when are you coming home." Amanda said."I'll be home sooner than you expect, don't worry. I'm sorry, this is taking so long to finish but don't worry, I'll be home soon", she said."Okay mum, I'll hold you by your words." she laughed."How is school? Any problems, do you need anything?"Amanda couldn't think of anything she needed
Amanda's mother came back late one night under a heavy downpour. As she stepped into the lobby, the rain got heavier drenching everything in its path. Not minding that she was wet, Amanda ran towards her mother, giving her a big hug."Mom!" She screamed."Hi baby, I've missed you." her mother said."Me too, even more." Amanda said. They made their way to the living room, Amanda was so glad her mother was here. "You know what darling, let me run upstairs then get out of my wet clothes then we'll talk. Is that okay?" her mother said."Sure Mom. And don't you worry, dinner is on me. Let me fix up something quickly." Amanda said making her way to the kitchen."Thanks honey." her mother said.Amanda was a good cook and she had no troubles preparing a delicious pot of spaghetti. Within thirty minutes, the food was ready just as her mother came downstairs."Something smells delicious." her mother hummed."Spaghetti mom, your favorite. Shall I serve?" Amanda smiled."Absolutely! Lord knows I'
In all of her 17 years of existence, Amanda had never felt this sad and dejected. The news of Leslie's mum's death hit them hard. They were currently in her house, trying to console her which proved to be a difficult task considering the circumstances surrounding her death. It had been a secret even for Emily and Amanda as none of them knew that Leslie's mother had been battling with breast cancer all her life. Leslie hid it so well that none of them knew anything not until she died."It's okay Les, please. She wouldn't want to see you like this." Amanda said."I don't understand, she was fine about a week ago. Then all of a sudden, she slumpe right in my arms. I had to dial 911, before calling my dad who was frantic the whole journey home. I'm so confused right now." Leslie sobbed.Emily and Amanda comforted her as best as they could but Leslie was inconsolable as she sobbed harder. About an hour later, her father walked in wearing a grim expression. The girls could tell that he was t
At the close of school, Emily and Amanda made their way to Leslie's locker. They needed to pack her things since they didn't know the time she'd be coming back. They had already gotten the permission from the principal before doing this lest they'd be in trouble for raiding another student's locker. When they were done, they left the school grounds which were already desolate and lonely. The only students who seemed to be within school were those taking extra lessons or those who served punishments for one crime or the other. "Em, could you please take Leslie's bag to her. I just remembered, I won't be going home directly. I need to pick up something from the mart first." Amanda said "Sure, don't be long. I'll be at Leslie's." Emily said."Okay, see you later".Amanda made her way out of the school, hailing a cab that was passing by. The cab was occupied as it simply drove away. Amanda decided to ditch getting a ride and simply walked the short distance to the Mart. A few meters awa
In Leslie's house, Amanda recounted all that had happened to her friends. Leslie was getting much better as she tried to get over her mother's death. "I told you that boy was a total douchebag. He's deranged and clearly needs to get his head checked." Emily said."I agree. Why would someone switch characters so easily, it seems as if he's possessed." Leslie said."It baffles me too. One minute he's caring the next he's a beast." Amanda said."Anyway, away from Parker. Did you know Michael approached me today." Emily said."Wait what? Michael, the school's football captain?" Amanda said."The one and only." Emily said."Did he confess to writing those letters?" Leslie said, eagerly."He didn't say that but he did ask me on a date." Emily said.Amanda screeched while Leslie clapped her hands. They were both happy for their friend who until before now had refused the many advances sent her way."I hope you said yes?" Amanda said."I did. But guys, I'm not sure about Michael. I don't know
During lunch time, the whole school was agog over Parker's arrest. Newspaper clippings perpetrated by some of the school's miscreants filled the hallway, the locker rooms and even the bathrooms. The clippings had Parker's picture on it, calling him all sort of names. For a moment, Amanda felt bad for him. Nobody deserved this but if he was found guilty, he deserved everything he got."If you ask my human side, I feel bad for Parker." Emily said."And your inhumane side says what?" Amanda chuckled."Well, not so much pity there." she said."It's just so weird. Someone who just came to the school and now, he's being suspected for murder. I wonder how his parents would feel especially his mum." Amanda said."Away from that. Leslie called yesterday, she'll be resuming school the following week. At least, it's over a month since her mother's death. She said she's ready to resume." Emily sighed."Okay. We'll just be here to give her all the support she needs." Amanda said."Yeah"."That rem
