The following day was a public holiday, one of the rare days where the students could laze about doing nothing. Amanda woke up bright and early, vowing to put all her mysteries behind her. She was going to enjoy the day to the fullest and the first thing she did was to invite her friends over. Her parents weren't at home but she wasn't surprised since her mother had called earlier to inform her that she would be traveling with the rest of the archaeologists for a conference.
Amanda had no idea how long but she hoped it was soon. Deep down, she really missed her parents and wished they could hold off on their numerous travels and business trips. The loud chime of the doorbell disrupted her thoughts as she quickly rushed towards the door to let them in. Emily and Leslie bounded in, carrying bags filled with snacks. Amanda had no idea they were bringing this and was quite surprised. "Oh guys, you shouldn't have done this." she said. "Let it never be heard that the great Emily came to your house empty-handed. It mustn't be heard." She said, placing one of the bags on the table. "You're always so dramatic." Leslie laughed."Thank you guys but really, you didn't have to do this." Amanda said. She made her way into the kitchen, placing a kettle on the gas stove. "I hope you guys are hungry, I'll make toast." she said. "I don't know about Les but you bet I am." Emily said.Half an hour later, the girls were seated at the dining table. The t v was on as they watched a rerun of their favorite movie. "I think Justin is a player, he doesn't really love Samantha like he claims." Leslie said "We can't really say Les until we watch the whole movie." Amanda said. "It looks certain though. I hope Samantha realizes this soon, it would be so disastrous when she finds out that his intentions aren't pure." Emily said."Hmmm speaking of intentions, has Michael confessed to writing all those love letters. Amanda said, sipping her tea.Emily choked on her tea as Leslie rubbed her back, grinning secretly. She knew that Emily was affected by Michael but as the tough girl she was, she didn't want to accept it. "No besides, I haven't seen him all week." she finally said. "Oh so you're keeping tabs on him. How sweet." Leslie laughed.Emily threw a pillow at her but she ducked right on time. Amanda laughed at her friend's antics as she changed the movie to another one. "We're not done watching that." Leslie whined. "Yes we are. We've watched it countless times Les, let's watch something else." Amanda said. "So, did you inform your parents about Parker's bullying?" Emily asked quietly. She knew it was a touchy subject, one that Amanda wished desperately to erase from her memory. The issue with Parker was a delicate one and there was no telling what would happen if he isn't reported. "No, I didn't. I couldn't work up the nerves too, my dad would raise the whole school down when he finds out about my constant bullying." Amanda said. "Oh darling, you should really tell someone. Okay, even if you can't inform your parents about it but let the school authorities know about it. It's no good keeping it tok to yourself." Emily said.Amanda knew was right but for the life of her, she didn't have the courage to do that. She felt humiliated and ashamed of herself for letting herself get bullied. First it was Ian and his friends now, Parker whom she expected to be different was even worse. Her whole life for the past few days seemed to be going downhill more than she could keep up with. Her parents were always absent and what's more, she suffered constant bullying.
"Don't think about it too much darling. We're here if you need us and if you need someone to help you report this issue, you can count on us." Emily said, giving her hands a gentle squeeze. "Thank you guys, I really appreciate everything you do for me. Sometimes, I don't deserve you but you stay with me no matter what comes my way." Amanda said. "Oh, that's nonsense. We're your friends and you're stuck with us till well, whenever you decide to ditch us." Leslie laughed.Well, she'd ditch you first because there's no ditching me now or never. Accept it baby girl, I'm stuck with you like glue." Emily smiled.
"I'm not ditching anyone, I wouldn't even dream of doing that. You're my bestest- if that's a word friends I could ever have." Amanda said.
"Well that's good to know. Enough of these mushy mushy talks, let's play some games." Emily said. "Okay, let's play. Leslie said.**********************
When her friends left an hour later, Amanda made her way to her room. She powered up her laptop, deciding to surf the net for some juicy news. A particular page caught her attention as she clicked on the page to find out more about it. The news was about a certain man named Ronald who was arrested for a scam. According to the reporter, Ronald was responsible for stealing millions of dollars in stocks and wiring the money into a Swiss bank account that couldn't be traced. The report further claimed that Ronald was in fact the head of this scheme and was in the habit of recruiting people who worked with him. Amanda couldn't imagine the pain that the victims of these schemes were going through. It was a nightmare, one that she wished never to fall in. Leaving the page, she scrolled further to related searches. She was shocked when the picture of a man that looked so much like Brandon popped up on the screen.According to the news feed, this man just relocated to New York City because of his business which crumbled in London. He had another partnership business in New York and decided to move his family here. Reading further, Amanda discovered that the reason for this man's failed business was as a result of the same scheme which Roland had employed. The man's name was Jacob Henshaw.Picking up her phone, Amanda dialed Emily's number. She needed to confirm this last name. Emily picked up on the third ring, yawning into the phone. "Whattttt" Emily groaned. "Sleepy head, sorry for disturbing you." Amanda laughed. "No no, it's fine. What's up." Amanda smiled."Err... This might sound weird but what's Parker's last name?" "Lucas. Why, what's wrong?" "I think I know why Parker is here."The following day in school, Amanda gave her friends the rundown of everything she discovered. They were quite surprised on hearing this news and couldn't quite believe that Parker's father was a victim of the Ponzi scheme."Now, I know why he's here. They needed a fresh start, away from all the things that reminded them of their problems." Emily said. The girls were currently in the cafeteria, munching on their food. It was another dull day ar school as not much activity was held due to the term slowly coming to an end. Most of their projects and assignments were already submitted and they were counting down to the day for the exam."Ian and his friends are organizing a party this weekend." Emily said."Nice of them to do that but I ain't going." Leslie said."Same here. I can't present myself to be bullied anymore, I'm tired of it." Amanda said."True though. If you girls aren't going, I'm not going either. Friends stick together. But seriously, Amanda, you really need to report this
The next day, Amanda woke up with a renewed strength. She vowed that nothing was going to spoil her day. Not Parker not Ian or his friends. As Amanda prepared for school that day, she made a promise to stand her ground no matter what happened. Her phone gave a sharp beep, indicating she had a call. The caller ID showed that it was her mother calling."Hey mum." she beamed. She had missed her mum a lot and couldn't wait for the day she got back home from her trip. Ever since she left, she had been all alone in the house, lasting about without any one to talk to."Hey darling, how have you been?" her mum said from the other end."I'm just here mum. I miss you, when are you coming home." Amanda said."I'll be home sooner than you expect, don't worry. I'm sorry, this is taking so long to finish but don't worry, I'll be home soon", she said."Okay mum, I'll hold you by your words." she laughed."How is school? Any problems, do you need anything?"Amanda couldn't think of anything she needed
Amanda's mother came back late one night under a heavy downpour. As she stepped into the lobby, the rain got heavier drenching everything in its path. Not minding that she was wet, Amanda ran towards her mother, giving her a big hug."Mom!" She screamed."Hi baby, I've missed you." her mother said."Me too, even more." Amanda said. They made their way to the living room, Amanda was so glad her mother was here. "You know what darling, let me run upstairs then get out of my wet clothes then we'll talk. Is that okay?" her mother said."Sure Mom. And don't you worry, dinner is on me. Let me fix up something quickly." Amanda said making her way to the kitchen."Thanks honey." her mother said.Amanda was a good cook and she had no troubles preparing a delicious pot of spaghetti. Within thirty minutes, the food was ready just as her mother came downstairs."Something smells delicious." her mother hummed."Spaghetti mom, your favorite. Shall I serve?" Amanda smiled."Absolutely! Lord knows I'
In all of her 17 years of existence, Amanda had never felt this sad and dejected. The news of Leslie's mum's death hit them hard. They were currently in her house, trying to console her which proved to be a difficult task considering the circumstances surrounding her death. It had been a secret even for Emily and Amanda as none of them knew that Leslie's mother had been battling with breast cancer all her life. Leslie hid it so well that none of them knew anything not until she died."It's okay Les, please. She wouldn't want to see you like this." Amanda said."I don't understand, she was fine about a week ago. Then all of a sudden, she slumpe right in my arms. I had to dial 911, before calling my dad who was frantic the whole journey home. I'm so confused right now." Leslie sobbed.Emily and Amanda comforted her as best as they could but Leslie was inconsolable as she sobbed harder. About an hour later, her father walked in wearing a grim expression. The girls could tell that he was t
At the close of school, Emily and Amanda made their way to Leslie's locker. They needed to pack her things since they didn't know the time she'd be coming back. They had already gotten the permission from the principal before doing this lest they'd be in trouble for raiding another student's locker. When they were done, they left the school grounds which were already desolate and lonely. The only students who seemed to be within school were those taking extra lessons or those who served punishments for one crime or the other. "Em, could you please take Leslie's bag to her. I just remembered, I won't be going home directly. I need to pick up something from the mart first." Amanda said "Sure, don't be long. I'll be at Leslie's." Emily said."Okay, see you later".Amanda made her way out of the school, hailing a cab that was passing by. The cab was occupied as it simply drove away. Amanda decided to ditch getting a ride and simply walked the short distance to the Mart. A few meters awa
In Leslie's house, Amanda recounted all that had happened to her friends. Leslie was getting much better as she tried to get over her mother's death. "I told you that boy was a total douchebag. He's deranged and clearly needs to get his head checked." Emily said."I agree. Why would someone switch characters so easily, it seems as if he's possessed." Leslie said."It baffles me too. One minute he's caring the next he's a beast." Amanda said."Anyway, away from Parker. Did you know Michael approached me today." Emily said."Wait what? Michael, the school's football captain?" Amanda said."The one and only." Emily said."Did he confess to writing those letters?" Leslie said, eagerly."He didn't say that but he did ask me on a date." Emily said.Amanda screeched while Leslie clapped her hands. They were both happy for their friend who until before now had refused the many advances sent her way."I hope you said yes?" Amanda said."I did. But guys, I'm not sure about Michael. I don't know
During lunch time, the whole school was agog over Parker's arrest. Newspaper clippings perpetrated by some of the school's miscreants filled the hallway, the locker rooms and even the bathrooms. The clippings had Parker's picture on it, calling him all sort of names. For a moment, Amanda felt bad for him. Nobody deserved this but if he was found guilty, he deserved everything he got."If you ask my human side, I feel bad for Parker." Emily said."And your inhumane side says what?" Amanda chuckled."Well, not so much pity there." she said."It's just so weird. Someone who just came to the school and now, he's being suspected for murder. I wonder how his parents would feel especially his mum." Amanda said."Away from that. Leslie called yesterday, she'll be resuming school the following week. At least, it's over a month since her mother's death. She said she's ready to resume." Emily sighed."Okay. We'll just be here to give her all the support she needs." Amanda said."Yeah"."That rem
Parker's POV Pain. That was the first thing I felt as soon as I woke up that morning. My soft king-sized bed did little or nothing to ease the many aches I was having all over my body. The ache was due to the fact that I had gotten into a fight again, the third within the week and had to sleep in the police cell uncomfortable bed till my mom came to bail me out. I couldn't help it, it was all a part of me. I couldn't stand and watch people throw insults at my family just because we were victims of circumstance. What befell us wasn't our fault. My dad just needed something, anything else that could better our lives. I couldn't and wouldn't blame him for that because he never knew we would get swindled. Even though we lost everything back in the states, we were not deterred because if there was one thing we had, it was hope. Hope that everything will get better and hope that one day, we would recover all we'd lost. I blinked slowly, trying to get my eyes used to the early morning s
